My mom just transitioned on June 6th of this month just 4 weeks shy of her 100th birthday. She had her own farm, heated with wood, focused on pure water and organic foods, herbs, and supplements. She never went to a doctor. Over the years many people would make fun of her lifestyle, calling her a "health food nut", these uninformed folks died YEARS before mom and had many health problems!

I have reversed my upset stomach since 6 months after a operation with a lot of antibiotics that I tried to repair with probiotics and plant based fiber rich foods. But it did not work, I did a three day water fast and back to normal. So happy after getting my life back. Now I fast 24 hours every second week. Maybe a three day fast once or twice a year,
I love all the interviews Alan Goldhamer does. I listened to the Rich Roll interview 2 years ago, about year ago I bought the Pleasure trap and over last two years I gave up alcohol, most of the meat. But still my lifestyle was very unhealthy, finally 30 days ago I made the change to Whole food plant based diet sugar free already down 15lbs and off my high blood pressure medication.

I used to suffer immensely from autoimmune spinal arthritis at only 17 years old. I attempted my first 48 hour fast at the age of 21 on a whim (not recommended) and it ABSOLUTELY CHANGED THE COURSE OF MY ENTIRE LIFE.
Within 2 days, more than 80% of my symptoms were gone. Since then I’ve been consuming an exclusively whole food plant based diet, started making my own videos, became a holistic nutritionist, and continued healing after my fast.
It was the one thing that opened my eyes and shifted my efforts in the right direction. Thank you for such an amazing video!
I used to be the cross country star of my high school. My coach even thought I was crazy. I would run for miles in 90 degree weather. But when I went to see the doctor they told me I was beginning to get a heart murmur and my blood pressure was almost 200. I also developed epileptic seizures. I do not run anymore. I walk. I think walking is much more natural personally. I think people do many athletic activities more out of a sense of competition and “achievement” rather than practical health.
"It's very difficult for people to live healthy in a world that is designed to make them fat, sick and miserable." Let that sink in for a minute.
I fasted for 40 days at True North in 2015.
Until one does it, they cannot understand how comfortable the body gets once it is fully in ketosis.
Appetite just disappears, and one feels light and relatively well.
Of course, you cannot be too active. You have to rest, the mind, as well as the body.....and you have to have adequate body fat reserves to do a water fast for 40 days. Hence why people have to be medically screened and supervised with regular urine and blood tests, which is the case at True North.

I am in the process of booking to come back to True North.
I came in 2015 suffering for 20+ years from the sequelae of meningitis. I had no magical expectations, but believed an extended fast was worth trying. My theory was that meningitis can scar the meninges and interfere with CSF flow dynamics. And an extended fast might result in catabolic resorption of some of the scar tissue.
I didn't sense this happened, but I did lose a lot of weight, and learned a lot.
I am a health professional in Australia and went back to TNH to intern. I saw many amazing remissions while there, and believe there is a profound paradigm breaking future for medically supervised fasting.
I hope you are settling in for the long term there!
But, don`t you loose too much weight? I can`t believe this can be healthy, not eating for 40 days?? You only drink water and eat nothing, for 40 days???

I went with Chris for the day and it was FASCINATING!! 😯 I kept pestering him to publish this interview so I could send it to two very sick people that Chris mentioned in the interview.
This exact same thing happened to me. I did two 7 day waterfasts without a glitch. Then on my 3rd water fast which i wanted to extend to 2 weeks ended me up in the emergency ward. I was fainting. The diagnosis said i was low in sodium. Truth is was drinking way more water than usual. That's what went wrong. I drank way too much water during that 3rd fast. I've since done another 7 day fast and it went smoothly... i was more aware of my water intake this time. Who knew that too much water can kill you!!!
Too much water can deplete our body's electrolytes. You can put a pinch or two (one at a time) of salt under your tongue to help. Cant recall if it's pink Himalayan or Celtic sea salt.
You need electrolytes. I add pink Himalayan salt . And no salt which is potassium chloride .
I drink about 4-5 liters of water a day and sometimes 6 liters. I have a hard time resisting gulping down water. I chronically have low sodium in my blood. I think my antidepressant makes me crave too much water.

really makes you think that all those health institutions never tell people about the power of fasting, so much money is made peddling pills instead of just not eating for a week. Diabetes can be reversed with fasting, even cancer in some cases (since the body eats it for fuel, its wild). Thanks for another banger video and putting chapters in. I only eat once a day and sometimes do 3 day fasts, it is very feasable and you become much more flexible during travel or anything in life really.
I was encouraged by Doctor Goldhamer roughly 20 years ago now and since then I have water fasted twice a year or as needed over the last 20 years. My initial faith in fasting comes from God who said not if you fast but when you fast! If its my creators expectation that I do it then I do not have to be afraid. I have had so many blessings from fasting that I never knew existed and have been blessings for humbling myself in this way.

Statins are known to cause blindness and dementia in older people. Happened to my mother in law.
I got her on the no oil plant based diet. Her tests were excellent. The MD said she had the blood tests of a teenager.
Unfortunately nobody ever talked about taking her OFF those horrible meds, and she was so brainwashed that she could not make the connection of the harm it had done to her. She needed a fulltime nurse that lived with her for 5 years. First for the total blindness then for the horrible dementia. That reduced all her life's savings to zero. And there were quite a bit at the start of this. She had been sharp as a knive before they had upped the statins. And she knew. She said: "This is not me. I am not feeling like myself".
That was 2015. From there on life was constant suffering until 2022. In the end she became so unmanageable that she was put on Risperidone. That is the stuff that finishes off our elderly quite quickly.
Did that to my father in law. Did that to my mother in law. Did that to my father. And is actually in this moment doing this to my mother.
I am watching all this....and I can do nothing as we have no means to organize the care for them. And besides......they have sooo much resistance and sooooo much blind trust in their doctors and the media and big pharma. Not a chance for anything else. So sad.
So sorry that all this is happening, and has happened, to people in your life. Didn't know that statins could cause blindness. Yikes! Recently, some study was published about the mechanism by which statins cause muscle weakness (which is an admission by researchers that statins can cause muscle problems, which is progress in itself). Sad that doctors would refuse to even consider taking someone off a medication that can have extreme side effects.
@@aureliaglenn2220 PLUS studies have shown that statins are reportedly only of benefit to 5% of the people that take them. But the side effects are for 100% of those who take them. Of course they never take you off of anything. We have to take responsability for ourselves and inform ourselves. But nobody does that. And big pharma is really happy about that.
This was engrossing. I have heard here and there about True North, and seen a few short interviews with Dr. Goldhamer over the years, but that was nothing compared to this incredibly informative interview. This was wonderful! I did a 10 day preventative water fast at True North with my wife in 2018. They are the real deal, they even teach you how to cook while fasting, which is an extra super power! Can't wait to go back. Great interview, questions and attention to detail. 👍

Goldhamer gets a little defensive and illogical when discussing hyponatremia, and he doesn't need to be. There is nothing unnatural about an unnatural activity requiring supplementation. The runners at Comrades are used to a customary level of salt intake, so their bodies are flushing sodium up to their genetic potential. They aren't balancing this with appropriate supplementation, so they become depleted. And then they increase their fluid intake beyond thirst signals and become hyponatremic. That's the recipe for hyponatremia. The runners in US ultras are also adapted to excreting large amounts of Na, but they're scarfing down pizza and pretzels and do not have this problem. However, none of this means that someone adapted to a lower level of sodium intake will require the same absolute amount of sodium supplementation.
Speaking of Comrades, I would recommned Dr. Tim Noake's book on hyponatremia in sports, Waterlogged. I would also recommend reading the Dahl and Kempner studies on sodium restriction. Dahl stated that he never needed to supplement anyone's sodium regardless of their level of exertion... in their jobs.
As someone who exercises quite a bit and eats a mostly salt-free diet, and as work on sodium balance shows, I would argue that sodium excretion in sweat is only genetically regulated at high customary intakes (see Dahl's work on sodium balance). It's like that quote (Goldhamer?) that "if everybody smoked, lung cancer would be genetic."
Over time and sweat, my sweat does become sodium depleted, to the point where it can no longer taste salty at all. The salinity of my sweat is one signal I use to determine whether or not I need to start supplementing with salt. Another is water throughouput during physical activity. The third is physiological cravings for salty and sour foods, which I've had with salt-free diet combined with heavy exercise (and also when weaning off lisinopril using a salt-free diet). Acids activate sodium taste buds, so if a bottle of lemon juice or vinegar makes you feel like a hungry vampire, then you could probably use some salt.
It's no big deal to add some salt to the diet to balance all of this without resorting to a customary level of salt intake. I'd rather supplement a little during sports than a lot. Other good scientific reading on salt is Macgregor & He, and the World Action on Salt in general. You'll notice the fatal flaw in studies on how minimal reduction of BP is with salt reduction when you read the WHO recommendations and the discussed true physiological need for salt. Find the Yanomami and you will find the truth! :)

Thank you. Mark Allen said he carries salt tablets and when he craves salt, he sucks on one. Once the craving stops and they don't taste delicious anymore, he spits them out. That has become my go-to.
I didn't take any until mile 42 at Comrades, when I felt faint, so I sucked on a few and they were DELICIOUS! And I felt better in a few miles.

When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I asked my doctor if he had an dietary recommendations. He said, and I quote, "If it tastes good eat it" I immediately went on a series of 3-5 day fasts. My numbers dropped each visit. I try to stick to an SOS diet, bu admit it is not easy.
Amazing! I know several people who used fasting to decrease their prostate cancer. The results post a long fast are pretty dramatic; tumor mass reduction and PSA drop sustained months later. Glad it worked for you with just 3-5 days. You’re a champ.

Salt is like crack lol sugar and oil free is easy is you eat enough sweet fruits and some avocadoes and unsalted nuts.
Great video Chris. A little anecdote. Years ago I visited the Pauling Health Manor in NY where they supervised fasting and healthy diet. The founder granted me an interview and on this topic of folks resorting to fasting only as a last resort: On one occasion someone drove their loved one to the manor but by the time of arrival the person had already passed. So sad that people only come to this as a last resort after conventional medicine has failed so spectacularly.
Argh, I'm so sorry to hear this. I know TrueNorth had at least one patient who booked a stay but died before arriving.

I think some of these doctors a little out of touch with regard to the needs of higher level athletes. I say that with respect of course, what they're saying is likely to apply perfectly fine to virtually everybody, but the stresses of an ultra marathon under extreme conditions may well *require* appropriate electrolytes as well as hydration as opposed to simply "just have some dried fruit".
All that aside, much respect to the work Dr Goldhamer is doing, and thanks for the continued high quality content.

One question to be raised on the VeganSOS, is the salt-hydrolise issue I get with endurance running/cycling such as triathlon. How do we handle the loss of salt? most gels contain high amount of salt. I live in the rather hot south of France, so getting concerned.
This been said, Alan Goldhammer is the only Dr that actually convinced me to take the VeganSOS idea seriously and follow it strictly. I also went on a 20 days water fast as a preventive measure. Not fun at all, I had followed extensive training on fasting coaching. Do it within a professional environment with diet unwinding before starting the fast!, but it's the VeganSOS combined with rest, exercise and the right state of mind that will change us for the better.
So epic cool, and I just met Michelle Cen this weekend at the National Health Association conference and interviewed her there and I couldn't believe how brilliant and ahead of her age she was, she's like the coolest and most brilliant and wisest twenty-four-year-old I've ever encountered.

I did it. Water only for 34 days. I wanted 40 days but had to stop due to nausea. In hind sight i probably just needed magnisium and potasium. Anyway i lost 42 lbs. I continued on with 72hr fasting 2 days eating for a month more lost tatal of 62lbs. Blood presdure went normal, glucose down, overal sleep fantastic.Peace in my boday and mind like never had in my life. I did it on my own by watching these people and learning all i could. I am a believer 💯. Fasting and intermittent fasting is now my new tool for health and cell renewal.

Absolutely! I’m on day 3 of 7. When I first started fasting, 24 hours seemed like a long time. My longest fast was 9 days and now I do a 7 day once a season.

Yeah, the worst part about fasting is the boredom of it. The best part is not wasting all of the time in washing up & cleaning in the kitchen! It's a mazing how much time we waste every day feeding & dealing with the consequences of our neurotic food addictions.

Literally the first and only person other than myself I have ever heard mention the incredibly common reaction of trying to control fever. I will never understand this and I have learned to consciously ride the chilly waves into a blissful place on my fevers, which I stay rugged up and let my body do what it is trying to do! Unless the fever is so out of control I might die, then I just don't understand why I would want to switch of this natural reaction as and whenever it ever appears.
Try saying that in any of the online mum’s group I got almost crucified. I don’t give myself or my kids any fever medication unless it’s over 39celsius. The concept that the fever is good and it’s what gives your body signal to activate the immune system is not popularized enough.
I've thought and said similar for years. But I do recognize there are cases wherein it is best to try to control fever. But for self, I haven't ever found it necessary.

@@shrinkingtinka6875 I'm afraid it's been suppressed, rather: When I was a child--I'm 50--it was the usual recommendation from every pediatrician. It's just basic biology.
I had a 104 fever for 48 hours Oct 1999. All I did was drink water. Woke up that morn, went to work like regular...but my eating disorders completely stopped. I went WFPB and lost 75 pounds in less than a year. 3 1/2 years later still no eating disorders. I have always given credit to the fever and people just role their eyes.
I learned a lot today and to ponder. Thank you so much for the wide focus you take on nutrition!

Longo said the stomach lining can be eaten into during a fast. He recorded it as signs of leaky gut. Said it happened less on an FMD diet. He also said it is important to eat healthy when start eating again.
I guess being leaky does not matter when not eating anything. And you get stem cells after to rebuild, perhaps better.

Same! I don't know about a really long fast... They would have to have a serious condition for me to think they need that, but I would love for them to have a shorter stay.
My mother wouldn't give up the ice cream, passed @75 and the last year wasn't good. She would be only 83 now. I quit sugar, 95% of the meats and alcohol, (3 to 6 everyday, for 40 years) dropped 40 pounds. All with you tube doctors and plant chompers.

I recently went for a short 7 night stay at TrueNorth Health Center (it was all my schedule would allow). Some of the people on this video were there when I was there. :) I went to give my body a reset and to bring some minor health issues under control before they become major issues. All of my issues are the result of dietary excess due to being stuck in the pleasure trap for decades. I fasted four days while there, one day of juices and three days of water only. I got off all supplements I was taking and one small acid reflux prescription. I have slept better this past month than I have in over five years, averaging at least seven hours of sleep without having to take any herbal supplements to help me stay asleep. I have had no acid reflux issues at all. I had already given up sugar, coffee, and highly processed foods before arriving at TrueNorth and had already lost some weight. I have maintained the weight loss from my time at TrueNorth and I am continuing to remain on a whole plant foods SOS free diet. I will go back to my doctor in October for follow-up blood work and I am looking forward to seeing improvements in several areas. I would highly recommend TrueNorth to anyone.

Two comments regarding Dr. G's response to Plant Chompers ("PC) questions: 1st about PC's near death experience after a long running race on a low salt diet. It was definitely NOT low glucose levels. Low glucose symptoms can happen during a long race (= hitting the wall) but these symptoms would immediately go away after eating. So not continue for 2 days. PC's suggestion it was from low sodium after sweating a lot seems most likely. In my own experience I stopped my afib by adding a little more salt to my very low salt diet. 2nd contrary to Dr. G's claim that the rough experiences in the 1st 72 hours of a fast is from toxin release (though that can come later in a fast) it is from the body switching from glucose derived energy to ketone (fat) derived energy. And this will happen in varying degrees to everyone starting a fast unless they are already in ketosis from eating a low carb diet

Somehow I didn`t see this vid when it was first released (notification button smashed now). VERY informative. I`ve been fascinated w/ the concept of fasting for years. I fasted on my own 10 years ago (I was 52) and went 30 days on water only. I felt INCREDIBLE! But had problems refeeding and lost all the benefits thereafter. Now, I`m planning a trip to True North -- thanks to your interview.

We should all learn to fast because as Siddhartha says in the book by Hermann Hesse, "when a person has nothing to eat, fasting is the smartest thing he could do."

Incidentally, I recently finished a fast the other day (just a 3 day one). I'm a fan of taking a half of lemon and squeezing the juice into some clean/purified water and adding a wee bit of "Himalayan" salt into it, and drinking the water slowly. Maybe those 6 or so calories "per meal" make it a non true fast (?) but I feel better when I do it. I keep the total amount to 1 to 2 lemons a day (I also drink water without it). It keeps up some of the electrolytes, but more importantly to me, it is actively cleansing in nature. Lemons, though acidic in their natural state because of the citric acid, if they are digested properly, are actually quite alkalizing in nature (mainly due to their high levels of potassium) . Metabolic wastes/toxins are predominantly acidic in nature, and so facilitating a higher alkalinity helps to speed up the process of detox of these, or so I think at least.
I wonder what Dr. Goldhamer would say about the above?
Anyways, the longest fast I ever did was 10 days, and felt great after (and started to feel pretty good about 4 days in). I would like to, and should do a longer one, but need to find the time and money to be able to do that.
He wouldn’t mind the lemon but would sure frown upon the salt.

How can you contact Dr. Goldhamer. I would like to learn more about this clinic. I am diabetic and other illnesses. I know toxins are hiding out in my body fat. If something can help get rid of this visceral fat I would love to be helped and supervised fasting. I recently started 16/8 and that’s hard for me. I see an improvement in my health eating a plant based diet and a little fasting. I would love a week at week at that facility. I don’t crave unhealthy foods.
I love this, I am so worried about the culture of using glyphostes on wildflowers most of which are nutritional and medicinal and the link to lymphoma in animals and non hodkins lymphoma in humans. I already believe in the plant based diet and have followed a vegan diet for 5 years. ❤
So true. There's a war on "weeds" here, and poisons are sprayed all over, as if that's less invasive than the plants, some of which are beneficial to wildlife, etc.

Thanks for doing this interview. I've been to TN three times but could never water fast more than 5 days without getting sick. After watching your interview (with Dr. G. and also his patient who fasted for cancer) I"m inspired to go back again and give it another try. Also glad to see you read the Pleasure Trap, which is an amazing book that sadly never received as much credit as it should have for its groundbreaking ideas.

Glad to see you, Dr. Goldhammer. I also have been diagnosed with dystonia. It's interesting that you've had luck overcoming it in your program. Sometimes I sound fairly normal, which leads me to thinking it's not really dystonia, but a mucus producing allergy of some kind. What say you?
