    Awesome interview. Only thing I wish they would have touched on is the other Black gymnasts who paved the way for them through the previous decades since the 80s ... Dianne Durham, Betty Okino, Dominique Dawes, Tasha Schwikert, Gabby Douglass. Being the ONLY Black gymnast on a team is a very different experience, and it paved the way to make it possible for more than one or two.

      @@Matthew-nw5tb your inaccurate outlook on Black Excellence has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. If you want to start beef, then make your own comment separate from mine.

    Three individual icons who are the present and future of our sport. If we look back, there are many Black gymnasts who created amazing impression on gym fans - Lucy Collins, Dianne Durham, Kim Hamilton, Angie Denkins, Joyce Wilborn, Corrine Wright (Tarver), Dee Foster, Betty Okino, Dominique Dawes. They shouldn't be overlooked for their contributions to the sport. It is spectacular to see how bright the future of gymnastics is.

    It's quite possible to have 4 of the 5 members of the Olympic team being women of color. Right now, Shi, Jordan, and Suni will be on the team unless something changes. Then at least one of Gabby/Simone will be on the team. Simone has made it clear she hasn't retired, and Gabby is already back in the gym training. And, if Tokyo taught us anything, Team USA needs Jade's floor and vault scores. I have to admit that I'm giddy over the possibly of having Gabby, Shilese, and Suni bars rotation in Paris for Team USA.

    As a Black woman I love seeing the sport becoming more diverse. Not just here in the states, but internationally as well. It is still bittersweet to me because while my granddaughter can see all these girls out there who look like her, it's still not a very realistic goal due to the wealth gap and income disparities that affect many families of color. Gymnastics is a VERY expensive sport. One that is out of reach for so many families. My daughter was not a gymnast growing up, but she was a competitive cheerleader. And I regularly worked 60 hour weeks in order to pay for it.

    I love them ! An not to take anything away from them but the title is black excellence and I know 2 of the 3 women are biracial / mixed however you prefer to describe it . I am biracial , and it’s just as historic to and important for other mixed girls that don’t typically see biracial athletes speak out about being biracial , I feel people always choose one race to identify with when it comes to interviews like this .

    • @faith2xxx
      @faith2xxx Рік тому +4

      Anytime you preface a comment with 'not taking away from,' 'I don't mean,' ' I'm not saying this because,' 'I don't mean to sound,' usually means you're about to make an unnecessary comment. They're identifying as Black and you shouldn't have an issue with that, just like no one should have an issue with you identifying as biracial. I notice that when BLACK is involved, people are quick to chime in that there is another side. Meghan Markle is catching hell right now not because she's biracial, but because of that Black half of her. President Obama even said when he lived in NYC taxi drivers would pass him up all the time, and he was sure it wasn't because he was a biracial man, but a BLACK man. Please allow us this moment to celebrate these 3 BLACK women, and stop trying to herd them away from calling themselves Black. Damn, we can't have ANYTHING.

    • @Matthew-nw5tb
      @Matthew-nw5tb Рік тому +1

      @@faith2xxx you’re gaslighting. What the comment is saying is true, they never even mentioned that they’re mixed. When you’re mixed and black and you only talk about your race when it comes to being black, that’s a priority. When Obama was sworn into office he wasn’t considered the first black mixed president, he was considered the first black president. Also, there are less mixed race people in the sport than black people, yet giving underrepresented girls support only applies to them? Being mixed isn’t an unnecessary detail like you say it is, and suggesting such makes you look like you just don’t like mixed people

    • @Matthew-nw5tb
      @Matthew-nw5tb Рік тому +4

      @@faith2xxx they aren’t just black, and saying so erases their racial identity. I don’t care how much they’re saying they’re black, they’re black AND biracial. You can’t just identify as whatever you want, they’re black and mixed and you can’t get offended at that or you’re racist.

      Probably but that doesn't really matter in a competition. What matters is skill and these three did not deserve to win! The Romania women were much better and deserved the gold and silver medals. They were cheated out of what they deserved to give black women medals just to make a point. That's wrong on every level. It's supposed to be about skill, not race and special treatment. Two women from another country who worked harder, looked better and had better skills were cheated out of their awards. At no point in the conversation did anyone insinuate that they medaled BECAUSE they were Black.
      This is being celebrated because it was the FIRST time it's ever happened. There have been many all-white podiums in years past.

      Please do not All-Live Matter this moment. These 3 women are incredible & have achieved leaps & bounds & you took this moment to be in your feelings. Fix it & get it together smh.

      Yes, you're right and the fact that they're black makes it sweeter because the sport since its beginning has been predominantly white. Get over it.

      No headlines would ever read "White Excellence All Around", instead there'd be a hashtag #GymnasticSoWhite and it would be decried as evidence of systemic racism. The achievements of those gymnasts in your alternate reality would be dismissed as white privilege.
