    It's funny how a subversion of a trope like "Demons are Evil" can become so common that playing it straight becomes unexpected.

    The best equivalent to the relationship between humans and demons I can think of is that of a hunter with a deer call.
    There is no actual communication, just an understanding of how to make them lower their guard.

    One thing I think is worth noting is that Lügner and his lackeys seem to have a very different idea of The True Nature Of Demons™ compared to the little demon girl. Lügner and his people are Aura's right hand men, so we can assume they're demons who've earned a lot of power and status from being good at lying and good at killing, so they're understandably proud of being bloodthirsty liars.

    • @JessieBalls
      @JessieBalls Місяць тому +4

      The little demon girl (who seems pretty low on the demonic social ladder, and who probably hasn't learned to associate deception and murder with her worth in the world) is all in all pretty honest with Frieren and the townspeople, and she doesn't even really try to lie to them. She even tries to make reparations with the grieving mother, which is something she wouldn't have to do if her plan was to run away or kill all the townsfolk. As far as I can tell, she legitimately wanted to feel safe in that town, and thought she had a real shot at cohabiting with the people who lived there, if only she could make up with the mother.

    That's one of these parts in the story where the German dub is unintentionally funny since all the names are just unaltered (mostly) common German words. Like, Lügner is just the German word for liar. The guy is straight up called liar and belongs to a species known for deception... yeah, I'd trust that guy.

    I completely get where you’re coming from on the demon topic. I feel the same way tbh.
    The show wants to portray demons as solely bad/evil but there is a bit of nuance to it. They don’t follow our way of thinking and seem to lack critical emotions for understand humans, which makes cohabitating impossible but that doesn’t mean they deserve to be eradicated. In many of the demon cases however, there is no excuse and they are just brutally evil, but that scenario with the child left an impression that maybe if there wasn’t already this inherited war between humans and demons, maybe they could have found a way to leave one another be. After all, the demon girl went without killing people for presumably a decent amount of time, and only killed someone as a means of trying to establish peace.
    I get what the show is trying to do, and overall it’s best to just recognize that demons are bad, but this did resonate a bit with me

      I think the issue lies in assuming their human form means more than it does, despite looking human the show makes it very clear they are simply predators whose prey is humans, it’s not just a lack of emotion they are literally an entirely separate form of sentient existence.

    I was really excited to see your reaction to this episode and, in particular, the section regarding demons and whether they are irredeemably evil. I've seen a lot of people just giddily jump onto the "demons are objectively evil" train and use that as an excuse to revel in their destruction and it always makes me think of situations where it is applied to other groups of humans. It specifically reminds me of a lot of the stuff gong on in season 4 of AOT.

    • @elmatador2139
      @elmatador2139 Місяць тому

      I think you are getting a little too caught up in the fantasy races have to be allegorical for real life races like AOT does. That is clearly not a direct parallel to Nazi Germany but it is supposed to be reminiscent of real events.
      Frieren's demons on the other hand are a representation of monsters that call out your name or sing or cry for help to lure you into a trap like sirens, wendigos, mindflayers or even that monster that used dead relatives to trick people in episode 5. Demons are by their very nature sociopaths, shown by the little girl who ended up that way despite not being taught, so trying to use them as an allegory for Jewish or black people loops around from being against descrimination to seeming quite backwards. That's not to say they can't do something interesting with the demons later on, sociopaths and psychopaths are not inheritantly villainous but let's not claim that they are in anyway representing of marginalised groups throughout history (unless that marginalised group is sociopaths)

    • @Thatguypat
      @Thatguypat Місяць тому

      @@elmatador2139 According to Frieren, who has been socialized since she was a child to hate demonkind.
      My point is that real cultures like Nazi Germany have, throughout history, used your second paragraph to describe other groups of people to justify their othering of them. The demons who are subhuman and categorically can't be trusted aren't representative of real groups of people, but they're absolutely representative of what bigots have said about them.
      Essentially I would just point out that that if you replace the word "demon" with "Jewish" in your second paragraph you'd have a pretty much one-to-one recreation of Nazi rhetoric. And I'd ask what makes you so certain that you're not falling into the same logical trap.
      I would be shocked if the show doesn't turn around and confront Frieren with the fact that she's literally being racist at some point in the future. Because its demonstrated multiple times already that it's willing to subvert standard fantasy traditions in that way. Himmel didn't pull the sword out of the stone, and the demons are almost certainly not actually pure evil.

    I think people misunderstand the child demon scene, it isn’t trying to say that the child demon thought she was doing the right thing and didn’t understand, she simply recognised the village wasn’t trusting her and yet was keeping her around. Her failure to understand human emotions led her to think this was the best way to deceive the village into trusting her, and thus allowing her to gain their trust and eventually take all of them. This is also the only reasonable option given what we already know about demons and information that comes later on, otherwise it’s a plot hole in how demons work in Frieren.

      yeah they're objectively evil. the question is if they're objectively malicious. obviously, most demons we've seen are, they're warriors with a thirst for blood lol but that demon child's reasoning for killing the village chief had a hint of "justice" behind it; i took something from you, so to amend this relationship, i should try to replace it. you can strangely follow the logic behind that, yet it's still alien and unreasonable when put in context with the actions that are taken. in fact, that's what makes the demon child so much more terrifying to me than the other demons; Lugner is a liar (it's literally what his name translates to). That's a very common and understandable evil. The evil the child represents is one that seems capable of doing the right thing, possibly even some small desire to make right with those they've wronged (even if it's solely for self preservation), but still presents a serious danger due to simply... not getting the logic behind human morality. they don't actively SEEK to destroy, but they have no qualms about doing so, should that prove to make the most sense in their completely foreign frame of reference

      As in, the very conceptional origin of demons as a hypothetical, mythical or fictional being is for them to be evil entities.

    Demons in this world are supposed to be total sociopaths. No empathy, no humanity. They simply do not understand human emotion, but they will use it. The demon girl doesn't understand why the word mom is important, but it somehow magically stops people from hurting her. So they're not evil; they don't understand the concept of evil. In the same way a predator that eats prey isn't evil.

    I’m glad you had such a healthy skepticism towards the inherent evil nature of demons. (A healthy mindset to have in general!) That situation with the girl just left me feeling more uncomfortable than anything, and as the show gets Into later, Frieren is very biased. I don’t want the show to do a “demons are good actually!” (Im not against an evil fantasy species, it’s actually kind of refreshing) But I do hope and imagine that more complexities will arise in the future that muddy the waters. Just as there are sociopathic humans can there not be empathetic demons, if rare? Curious where the story is going with this because I bet we aren’t done yet.

    With the extra information we learned in this episode about what demons are like in this setting, it’s especially interesting to reflect on how comparatively friendly Frieren was with Quaal, one of the seven Sages of Destruction. It's crazy how a couple minutes into the demons proper introduction here they just point blank TELL you straight from the mouth of one of them that they're just irredeemably evil, and yet it's still so easy to fall into the trap of their words even as a viewer. I fell hook line and sinker for the father bit and I feel pretty embarassed about it lol. You sound like you're probably gonna hold out on it longer but after just this episode I'm 100% with Frieren, sorry to that single theoretical good demon I guess lol. But I think the concept of these demons is really cool, it's probably something borrowed from some real myths if I had to guess.
