You can get cellular modems that allow you to override the TTL on the data packets. The TTL is how the carrier knows if you are hotspotting or not. That means that you can hotspot, but make the carrier think you are using the data on your device instead of hotspotting.

@@HappilyEverHanks TTL is "Time to Live." Every data packet sent over the internet has that setting as part of the packet. Every time that packet goes through a server or router in the network the value is decremented until it reaches zero then the packet stops being routed. Your phone and computers typically uses a TTL of 64. If I'm using my phone the phone company can tell because TTL has decremented only to a certain point when my packet reaches the phone company servers. If I was tethering my computer to my phone the TTL would have decremented one more value when the packet went through the phone so they know I'm tethering. If I go to my computer and set it to have the TTL value be 65 instead of 64, suddenly the phone company thinks the packet originated from my phone.
So, when the data came from your phone the phone company sees the TTL as 63 (the TTL decremented by a value of one from 64). If you are tethered the TTL packet is 62 because it was decremented by your phone to 63 then again when it hit the phone company router. They see the value is not 63 so they consider it a tethering packet. However it your computer started with a TTL of 65, the packet would decrement to 63 when it hit the phone company and they would think it must have come from your phone.
There are cellular modem/routers out there that have a setting that allow it to overwrite the TTL setting in packets passing through it so you can have an entire network behind that router that the phone company can't tell is from a tethered device.

Oh yeah that sounds about right! We've been to some where they say the same... 'Super fast Wifi'. Nothing at campsite. Figures, there's a lot of people in the park. We take the laptop to the office since they say 'it's always really fast right in the office no matter what'. Slower speeds than our phone hotspot. Never trust what they describe their wifi 😆- Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

Another alternative to use non hotspot data, Use a regular router, set up a non internet VPN(instructions on youtube), i.e. just a local wifi network for only your devices to talk to each other. Then you can screen mirror from your phone to a smart TV, firestick etc. I use this setup for security/monitor cameras, like WYZE cams, nest etc.

    Security
For those that deal with private information (work, PII, PHI, credit cards, etc), please do not connect to public hotspots (even if they give you a passcode)
Other people on the network can see the data (if they know how, I do not but that is what IT tells me)
Use your own secure, password protected hotspot
Have used the adaptor for the tv for years and it is great as long as you have a signal!

You can also use a VPN when using public hotspots, as this will make it more secure against interceptions, because all the data between your pc and the vpn provider is encrypted.

We think you videos are fantastic and have a lot of good sugestions. Just watched this episode and the HDMI idea was great. I think Nae Nae, lol, was holding an adapter for her iphone. The androids have a tethering function where you can connect via a USB cable to a computer. Then you can use a HDMI or just use screen mirroring from your phone or your computer to the tv if your tv is capable of doing that. I haven't tried it yet but I know it will work also. Don’t know if this has already been posted, but a lot of “Smart” TVs have an app on them that will allow you to broadcast things like Netflix, Hulu and UA-cam to them without any extra wires. We have Vizio TVs and they have an app called “Smartcast” which is part of the TV so there are no extra charges. I’m pretty sure that would accomplish the same thing as your HDMI adapter. It doesn’t solve your cellular access issue, but it could mean one less set of wires in your life. ❤

Hey Kathy! Congratulations to you and your husband! Grand Design is amazing (we certainly love ours).
We are extremely grateful for your kind word s as support. I wish we could express through words how much this means to us ❤️
We look forward to hearing more about your journey! Are you guys going to be full time living upon picking up your new Grand Design? I’m not sure I have seen the Reflection 260 RD in person.. so I am going to do some research. It curious to see what y’all are getting 😃🙌🏼
Our friends live in a Reflection 337 RLS and they love it. To be honest, we were initially going to go with the Reflection series before we decided on the S-Class Solitude

      @KathyCatlinWellness 3 роки тому +2

@@HappilyEverHanks The Reflection 260RD is great for two people...and our springer spaniel! It's a smaller camper, but still feels roomy and has all the amenities of Grand Design. As a health coach who is fussy about how I eat, the 12 cubic foot fridge and great kitchen area really suit me. We will not be living in it full time, but we plan to explore the country more. Our son, daughter in law and grandkids live in another state and the camper will be a great way to go spend time with them, but not get under their skin! Sooo- it checks a lot of boxes. Add covid in the mix and camping in an RV really helps alleviate the itch to get out to see more of our beautiful country. Can't wait to get started!! Oh, btw - your videos about winter cracked us up! We live in upstate NY and totally relate to the challenges your PA living gave you- big props for dealing with this winter in an RV!

      @HappilyEverHanks  3 роки тому +2

@Catlin Wellness That’s great to hear! Having that roomy feel makes all the difference. How great to hear that you are a health coach! That must be a really fulfilling job, being able to support healthy eating and lifestyles. To be honest, Renee and I recently started counting calories and just “behaving more” with our eating habits. We are so glad that we did, we haven’t felt this great in awhile! Powerful stuff you teach!
That’s a great start to RV’ing, there is so much to see out in this world. We feel like RV’s bring you to the doorsteps of it all. Plus how great is that, being able to visit the grandkids as well!
LOL thank you so much, we won’t be winter RV living anytime soon again. We learned a lot, but it was challenging! Glad we were able to make some content from it that might be of value to others. We are ready for some warm sun! 😊
Thank you so much for the amazing support. We look forward to hearing from you again soon! Best to you, Cheers!! - Kyle and Renee

Samsung has this thing called DeX that in addition to using your cell phone for Netflix et al on your TV, provides a desktop environment. All you need is a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and you've got a more traditional computer setup with your cell's unlimited plan. Between Google Docs and all the apps you can find, you can get a fully functional emergency fallback with just your phone. For the price of an HDMI adapter, it can't be beat! I have to be connected 24/7 to maintain the IT infrastructure where I work so I've got that set up before I've got the wiring finished.

Something new, T-Mobile has come out with unlimited wireless wifi for your home. 5G and LTE, just plug it in. Unit is about the size of oatmeal box. So I got it for the house and got rid of the cable Wifi system. Just plug it in and it does the rest. So I thought, could we take it on the road. We took it in the RV to Mississippi and now we are in Alabama at Guntersville. It works great in the RV, I found if my phone has a signal it seems to have a signal. It also has incredible range….like 75 yds from the RV. As a seasoned citizen with their senior plan two phones and the wireless wifi was around $130 all unlimited data. As 5G coverage continues to improve you’ll find more and more access to the signal. An added benefit is you also have unlimited text and wifi on you phone internationally in most major countries. For all the international travelers this is a real benefit.

I found that just 4mbps can sustain the EMR application and still give a decent video chat over MS Teams. What’s everyone else using? Great conversation @Hanks! $20 a month for unlimited OnStar WiFi through your GMC (we have used our Chevrolet). Hi, I’m sure it’s too late to comment on this video lol, but Starlink is better for being in one place, if you use it as an RV starlink service you get second to residential service and also are competing with others in the campgrounds. I work from home remotely so I need good internet service and I use this but I use it as residential and change the address each time I move somewhere different. It works great if stationary and no obstructions. I used to use a hot spot and that worked okay better with a booster but still not as well as the Starlink. If you are moving around though continuously might not be the best for you. It’s about $600 for the set up and $110.00 a month. Hope this helps

I'm looking into Starlink now that the satellite network is so much more robust. There is also an RV specific plan that allows you to easily switch your 'address' while on the road and suspend the service (and monthly payments) if you are not using your RV for a bit. As for my current set-up, I use the HDMI device for my iPad (USB C) connection which is great other than having the cord hanging. Another way of doing this is to use "Screen Mirroring" on you TV. Many smart TVs will allow you to screen mirror over BlueTooth or WiFi directly to your phone allowing you to cut the cord. This feature is great because you can stick your phone in the window for a better signal and not be limited by the length of the HDMI cable. I do use the Hotspot on my phone and iPad for my computer when not in range of WiFi, but so far have been very lucky with RV Park WiFi... I do check the park map and select a site directly next to the WiFi booster which helps.
Love your content, see you on the road.

@@HappilyEverHanks no we are newbie’s 1 year in. Rick retired in October so we are traveling around the US. I still have a few years of work. We have a long 3 week trip coming up and it will be our first time dry docking for a few stops. It’s good to get insight from full time RVers on how they do travel days. We are not big on truck stop cuisine and rest stop vending.

If you buy a chromecast ($40), it’s tiny like your adaptor, but it’s wireless. It will cast anything from your phone. It’s also free. Also, FirstNet is also for law enforcement, firefighters, etc. not just healthcare personnel just so you know. Loving your videos!

Good job explaining the different options for internet and TV. If you upgrade TVs that have Airplay and/or Chromecast one can simply connect wirelessly

I joined FMCA. The have an unlimited sprint MiFi plan for $49 per month. When in the off season, you can have the plan reduced to like $15 per month. I’ve never not had some signal. We leave it on in the truck, wife and kids can stream from Chicago to Orlando with no loss of signal.

Thank you guys for your input as always is helpful. One option I use when I am camping in PA and when we go out due to my son that loves his ipad to play games is I use Visible - which is a $40 a month unlimited cell service pre paid type plus I can have him connect his ipad to the internet via hot spot. So far no issues with it that way. Only bad part is when you hot spot its only I think one device not sure I have not tried multiple yet. Just another option for someone possibly!

Thank you so much for the amazing feedback, this really means a lot to us!
The Visible sounds like a great option. We haven’t heard of it before, but it sounds like a flexible and reasonable priced product. It’s nice that your son can use it as a hotspot. We have used multiple devices on a hotspot before, but I am not sure if that is applicable through every brand of hotspot on the market. Maybe play with it and see if it works!
So great catching up, we look forward to hearing from y’all again! Best to you - Kyle and Renee

We use Visible unlimited hotspot, $40 per month. All you have to do is hook it up to a nano router then you can broadcast its WiFi to as many devices as you want and the phone thinks/sees there’s only one connected device.

I've been doing a marathon watch of your videos today. I'm doing research to transition to RV life for retirement soon, especially after having major house damage from Ida. I work from home and I have to have internet to do it. Starlink will be great once it's actually fully mature but until then I'll check out the Verizon 150GB hot spot plan. Your videos have been a wealth of information and have answered many of my questions. Right now I'm in a travel trailer while my house is unlivable, but once it's fixed I'll be getting a 5th wheel for sure and selling the house.

What’s your name by the way? Any thoughts on what brand of 5th wheel you are looking to get?

Hey y'all. I just started following your page this week, but I've already learned so much!
Your content is great but I love that y'all are fun and goofy too lol.
I'm considering venturing out on the road full time in about 2 years when my son turns 18.
I'm an IT guy so constant internet is a must for me to work on the road.
It's good to know new options are constantly being introduced.
Hopefully it will be even better when we're ready to hit the road.
    Thanks y'all!
    Chris

I agree with STarlink. Wait a year or two. Right now they only have just over 1700 satallites up out of the 42,000 they plan to have. They also intend for it to be used mobile eventually in trucks, RV's and boats. I'm hoping by the time we're ready to get back on the road it will be ready. Right now while working at home we're using over 300gb a month, sometimes up to 600gb.

Yeah for sure! Isn't it amazing how many satellites that StarLink plans on sending up?! 😱We can't wait to hear more about the progression of the industry and to see where it takes mobile internet!

Yep only 2100 Starlink satellites up in April 2022. At home we use about 1TB per month with work and streaming/gaming.

@@33thewitt With them testing/turning on roaming for so many, I'm getting anxious for the mobile opportunities of Starlink now. They are just about there.
