There is definitely nothing like a 'j' sound in the Brazilian pronunciation of the 'lh' sound. If anything, it's closer to a fast 'lee' sound... like Cu Eh Lee O

A reason some Orthodox Christians make pilgrimages is to visit a site where they can venerare the holy relics of a saint personally interesting to themselves. A Christian named after St. James would do the Santiago pilgrimage because of this.

The most spiritual experiences I've had have been walking the mountains and forests here in Aotearoa. Long journeys, isolated places; there's something about these that clears the mind and refreshes the being. Nice video! 🐱

Im from Oviedo, and i did the camino the santiago because my best friend died and that year was really dark for me. Im an atheist so i never did it for religious reasons but there is an spiritual feeling while doing it plus all the people you meet along the way. When i arrived is not seeing santiago that made me feel satisfied but actually just thinking about the journey to get there, honestly never felt happier and more free than when i was doing it

Living in Galicia for over 20 years and being near the Camino Invierno I have thus met a fair number of pilgrims. I never understood the bit about getting up early, sometimes walking in the dark, rushing to get a bed for the next night. That sort of thing does not sound like fun or spiritual at all to me.
The recent rise in those walking the Camino is certainly down to commercialism . This has been undertaken by the Xunta de Galicia. So much so that one can obtain a Accreditation that you have walked the route if you have done 100km. And where is the 100 km mark for all routes? within the boundaries of Galicia. The Xunta always boasts about eh number of pilgrims as a sign that here in Galicia tourism is on the up.
According to the local press, we are now sadly seeing signs of over tourism in the city of Santiago. Some of the population of Santiago are not pleased by this huge increase.

I remember I had a Times book when I was younger that showed other cultures. Each was two pages long and for Spain, it mentions the camino. Not sure what happened to the book. Also, just yesterday I was watching a movie and one of the trailers was about a movie about the camino. In highschool, my class was reading the Canterbury Tales and one of the things in the pre-reading exercise was talking about other pilgrimages and why people go on them. In the Boy Scouts of America, there is a hiking trip called Philmont and many scouts go on it at least once.
The hat went into a holy journey of itself.

I was in Lisbon this last summer, and I met multiple German people who were backpacking or just finished backpacking this route. The people I met did it more or less for fun according to them and only a few did it for religious purposes (at least those I talked to)
Special mention to the Vatican to Santiago de Compostela Camino. Forgetting what its called. It is considered an absolute top one.

As a young lad back in the 90s I was fascinated by the Caminho de Santiago after reading "The Pilgrimage", by Paulo Coelho.
i didn't go on the camino, but this year and a few years ago, i went with my parents and sister to Santiago de compostella on easter. before this year i had never thought of myself as particularly religious. but something about the ceremony, the music and how so many people got involved changed me. i think about religion and God a lot more, despite still not going to church. i was raised catholic-ish but stopped going at around 7 because i found it boring. i still did my first communion and go to church on easter and christmas but i don't believe you have to go to church (or any religious establishment) to be a religious person. it's a very personal thing and i'd love to do the camino some day to explore my belief further.
That way of thinking is just pure protestantism... you are a product of the time you were born. Nobody really gave you the real notions of Catholicism. It is a pity. I will pray for you. 🙏🏽✝️

I think 2025 has been designed a jubilee year for pilgrimages.
My mum did the Camino a few years ago for completely non religious reasons (she likes hiking but was somewhat injured so a long flat route suited very well). There was a lot of judgement though-due to injury she got her bags transported and stayed in better accommodations than average, and people were rather shitty about it. Thanks for this very interesting video!
I think it really depends on her attitude, if she recognised that the way she was doing it was significantly easier compared to other pilgrims, then yeah, but if she was complaining of how hard it is for "all of us" next to people who are carrying 8-15 kgs on their backs doing the same thing and sleeping with 15 others in the same room it can be a bit annoying yeah, especially if you're tired/having a bad day.

I thought the crusades were a response to the Fatimid caliph al Hakim (also important in Ismaili Shiism and the Druze religion) destroying the church of the holy sepulchre.
... And the invention of the Saint James' grave discovery was a helpful yelling to renforce the link of the weake northern Christian kingdoms with the Holy Carolingian Christian Empire again of Emirate Córdoba's Power.
The Crusades began because the Byzantine Empire appealed to the Pope for help to fight off the incursion of the Seljuk Turks deeper into Anatolia.
There were concerns for ages, by the Popes, for the security of the pilgrims going to Jersualem and intense anger for the destruction of the Holy Sepulchre but they had no authority to do anything, as the holy sites in Jersualem were under the protection of the Byzantine Emperor.
So even though they were angry with the destruction of the Holy Sepulchre and the massacre, rape and kidnapping of Western Catholic pilgrims to the Holy Land by the Seljuk Turks, the Popes still needed Byzantine permission to launch any military intervention.
I'm not religious but the trip itself is an incredible experience tbh😁

The point of a pilgrimage is religious. The Christian pilgrimage is suppose to show the trials Jesus was filled in the wilderness for 40 days
Most of these people are pilgriming for a large part to tell people about it afterwards (do it for the gram)

Was it really because Jerusalem was no longer possible for pilgrims to access that the Crusades were launched? Were there other reasons that the remains at Santiago de Compostelo were thought to be St James himself? Come on, I subscribed to your channel because your previous videos seem well researched and thought through. This is just simplistic and mockery.
Yeah, the Crusades weren't really for religious reasons but more for economic ones; kings of various European countries just used Christianity to dupe the common people to die in the Crusades for them.
The video answered the first question with PARTLY yes.
The 2nd question is not answerable, but you're rarely gonna be able to fully cover any significant event in history in a 15 min video. I suggest if you wanna know more you should research yourself and not complain in the comments.
Imo the popularity of pilgrimages over the centuries was covered very well in the video, and that was it's main point. Of course, there'll always be some left out details, no matter how long a story already is.
