He was the only one smart enough to see that his whole life was a dead end. The gang life was pointless, his attempts to escape to California didn't work out, and his only real options were to die, keep bumming around or become a drunk like his father. He was considered crazy because he saw a whole other world no one else could see and wasn't just content to keep clinging to cheap vices in order to bring meaning to his life like the rest of the poor suckers in his neighborhood.
