  • Last of the big tides until September, some random swell running but a low pressure gauge of 995mb bulked up the 10 meter water levels with overtopping.

I'm a 69yr old brit who used to sail yachts from 8ft-50ft in coastal waters and over to the baltic and down to the Med, and I think its only landsmen that stand on a shore in a storm, not seeing the danger, I have motored a yacht 30feet away from a waterspout(a sea tornado)and lived to laugh about it with the crew in the Taverna that night, being swept overboard in a storm while on helm at night was always my nightmare, made the Sunrise in the Morn extra special,

So you found great joy and pleasure, ( and excitement) from sailing, and kept doing it despite knowing of the dangers. Good for you. Yet if someone watches in awe from the shore you condescendingly tell them they're being silly. Give it a rest.

Why am I mean? He sailed IN the storm, often for days at a time, but we shouldn't watch from the shore when its stormy.@@cutsofly3219

I used to travel to Redcar sea front to watch the very same spring tides in the 70's. The waves used to pick up the stones from the beach and smash them into car and shop front windows.

2:50 You wouldn't think someone would leave their expensive car there where a large wave could bash it against the wall behind it.

I was lucky enough to born in Barnstaple and grew with a dad that loved sailing, and on one occasion sinking.
Lived in Lynton and fished all around the bay, then lived in Ilfracombe, up on Castle Terrace, with great panoramic views over the town, harbour and surrounding cliffs.
It's been 35 years since I was living there, and although some parts like the pier has gone and some one way streets introduced. I still knew all the roads into Barnstaple, Bideford, Instow, Lynton. Didn't need the satnav to get around.
Watching these clips brings the smell of the sea straight back and memories of fishing from just about every small beach at night, catching makarel, gutting and cooking them, then eating it in less than 10 mins. Can't get fresher than that, catching dog fish from a small boat or catching rays from silvery sands.
Great times to be growing up
      Thanks for posting this.

Ive seen similar in Brean near weston super mare where the start of the Severn Bore happens. Massive high tide, nearly got trapped on the beach once. Rocks been thrown over and hitting coastal caravans. It's a sight to behold.

Went to Lee bay about a month ago, the tides hadn't been particularly high, keep an eye on tides on the Bristol Channel for the Severn Bore - but was surprised to see that at Lee there was sea weed on the sea walls, so it had topped with waves. Always amazing to see the tidal surges. Thanks x

I wonder how far the tide goes out during this equinox? Is it far enough to get razor-fish? When I lived in Saundersfoot, the tide used to go a hell of a way out during the Equinox, used to walk out and fill buckets with razor-fish, brilliant bait for cod.

I used to live here up on Castle Terrace way back around 35 years ago, had a great time growing up from RAF Chivenor to Barnstaple to Lynton to Combemartin to Ilfracombe. Was great at Ilfracombe school and community college as it was back then, we had a teacher called Mr Beer, who was on the lifeboats crew. Every so often we would here a maroon going of and he literally dropped everything and got down to boat house, being long ago it was located near the toilets next to the pier, and had to be towed down the road and around the corner to get to the harbour slipway. I've been back around 7 years ago for a weekend stay with my brother Merlin, yes him! Still knew all the roads and directions

Anyone with a bit of Knowledge & Common Sense, with regard to High (Spring) Tides, combined wth severe stormy weather coming in from a West, S.West or N.West direction , are likely to result in conditions like in this vid clip! With similar tide & weather conditiions,- this could happen anywhere on the UK's west facing coastline!!
