- "Complete metamorphosis" video of a Cecropia Moth includes caterpillar skin shedding, cocoon spinning, pupa and moth emergence. This, along with descriptive text and music, combines to create a unique learning experience.
I am 63 years old in this is the most exciting thing I've seen, I have a caterpillar in a blueberry bush in my backyard, I have been studying it for close to a week
Isn't it just amazing!! My partner, knowing how much I love butterflies, purchased a butterfly habitat and caterpillars for me. They didn't leave my side as I watched them everyday with my magnifying glass. When they became butterflies and I let them go, I took caterpillars from the garden to protect and feed them in the netted habitat, turns out they are moths! They have cocooned themselves with the napkin I lay on the bottom, it's amazing to watch them do that. They have been cocooned for a month already.
Great video. Never get tired of watching them. Been raising and releasing them since I was 10. I’m 68. Still doin it.
Thank you for that, it is better than anything on the TV now days. It was beautiful!
boomer alert
This was just wonderful and I learned so much. I can't THANK YOU enough for sharing this with others.
We had a big silver maple tree in our backyard as a kid and I would always find caterpillars of this moth and I would raise them through the caterpillar, cocoon, and adult stages. I don’t believe they are as common now as they used to be, sadly.
this video is really neat but i should *not* have been eating gummy worms while watching
It makes me a little sad that this bug goes through a lot to get to its final stage and just gets to live ten days as a beautiful moth :(
And they don't eat!. Over winterizing...is the cocoon in tree branch or underground?
@@jeritrudeau4867 usually on a branch, every individual is different but sometimes they wrap a leaf around it too
Tiziana Camila you can get them to live longer by assist feeding them honey mixed with water
Maybe they don't see it that way....
@@zonester_exe9142 Cecropia Moths have no mouth parts or proboscis.
The struggle to become a butterfly was about nine months
only for a ten days live, and in the same time,
for the Cecropia Moth a whole live.
Does anyone else find it just the slightest bit unsettling when they're almost done shedding and still have the head capsule that looks like a second head? Or is it just me?
Me too
My favorite part is when the little head falls off. Like a fingernail. Gross but so cool.
The pre-pupa to pupa step is just the most magnificent part apart from emerging to be butterfly itself
good content..thanks for the sharing...keep it up..waiting for your next content...stay connected..
Thank you very much for posting this video.
Absolutely fascinating and beautiful to watch such an incredible life cycle of transformation- all programmed within.
Very nice! Mine never eclosed in the spring, so I cut it open yesterday to see what it looked like inside. I was so looking forward to seeing a beautiful moth in the spring. I kept it outside in my gazebo over the winter so it would be exposed to the natural elements, so I don't know why it never completed it's cycle. Thank you for sharing this!
I found one of these moths outside my bar lying in the parking lot in Tulsa Ok on Thursday May 27. That lead me here. This is an amazing video!!!
Nature at times can be so perfect and beautiful,I love your videos, thank you.
Amazing to watch - thanks for sharing it
super, well made footage
Great video! Thank you
Found one at work one day and it was the most beautiful thing ever!
This is a gorgeous video. Very well done and informative.
I am 36 years old and have ONLY seen 1 IN PERSON❗️
I was aged 4-5 and my 90+ year old Neighbor Fern had 1 on her foot and after I pointed it out in her garden she was ready to stomp it to death but I begged her not to and she didn’t at least while I was there❓❗️
I have ALWAYS ASSUMED that she killed it after I went home❓❗️
THANK YOU FERN FOR NOT TRAUMATIZING ME AT SUCH A IMPRESSIONABLE AGE❗️❗️❗️
AND FOR ALLOWING ME INTO YOUR HOME AND FOR KEEPING ME SAFE WHEN MY PARENTS DID NOT❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️
I AM FOREVER GRATEFUL FOR FERN AND I PRAY THAT WHEN I MAKE IT TO HEAVEN THAT SHE IS THERE TO GREET ME WITH A BIG OLE HUG🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❗️
Oh yeah the worm was located in Jackson County in Jackson, Michigan
what a wicked woman. still. she is dead now.
Wouldn't the brightly colored skin simply be an evolutionary warning to predators to stay away because it looks toxic? Not for camouflage but still a form of defense.
the whole vid is brilliant but frankly i’m very impressed about the music. Good Job!
Great video. We really got to see everything
After seeing the clips crediting you viewing inside of the cocoon from an animalogic video, I wanted to watch the whole thing - I thought it would be more of a short time lapse photo collage type thing, but instead got a very informative video with lots of information and learned a lot of new things. Thanks!
Very informative! I've never seen them before 😍
This was lovely
Wow, that’s great video.
Thanks! A friend gave us two cecropia cocoons which we watched hatch this spring in our screened porch. Metamorphosis is fascinating to me. The shedding of skin seems to be an alternative to a skin "patching" mechanism. Since you have to build the skin the first time that mechanism exists. Building a mechanism to control the skin building mechanism would be simpler than building a patching system.
great work, I really enjoyed this
I had moved back to the Midwest for a year from SoCal, and while in the Louisville area I had the chance to see two crecopia moths mating in a bush outside my front door. I was thrilled when I found out from my sister in law that this was a rather rare sighting since they usually fly at night.
O my gosh it is so beautiful and amazing
Superbe, bravo.
Thank you for going slow between scenes. With other youtubers I have just enough time to read what is displayed and then they go on to the next scene. I miss getting a good look at the animals.
Also, thanks for the video. If you had not made it I would have never known about these beautiful moths.
So beautiful and yet so very sad.... That one of the most majestic families of moths aren't able to feed from flowers like other moths and butterflies. How wondeful it would be, that the adult moths could grace the world for just a few months.
Thanks So beatiful!
very cute !! I like music
Estos vídeos son geniales
Remarkable!

I shall.not kill a moth now,after this marathon.How dare I?

nice work
thankyou
So does it sit in limbo all winter? I found one of the giant caterpillars walking in the grass and I want to watch it hatch into the bat sized moth they say it will be. Is there anything special I should do to ensure it’s life and metamorphosis happens properly?
Also, which part of the life cycle is that, at 17:47?
Found one missing hind wings, a bit of one front & most of the other. Cannot fly. Flutters, flops & crawls.
Somehow made it into husband's car. He works near freeway. Thinking it may have been hit by car & thrown through husband's open window.
Keeping under carport in lg bowl, mostly covered@nite. Been attempting to give water w/sodium minerals added, but other than that, do not know what to do w/it.
Any ideas/info would be greatly appreciated. TY!
Did you remove the prepupa to pupa sack/remains? In video, it just disappeared? Around 14:30 mark.
I have one of these right now still in it's cocoon. Hoping to get to see it come out.
What do they eat we’re did u find it
Kacy Spernow
I think you can buy cocoons. Also most of the moths that size actually dont eat at all. They only live over a very short span and are only mating and laying eggs as moths
Kacy Spernow they dont eat
How long does the process take for the Cecropia to make the pupa?
I have two of these in my butterfly garden! How long does this entire process take? Mine are huge and we are starting to have freezing nights. I want them to survive!
Jessica Washer about a year
now is the season of butterflies .

Did u cut a hole in the cocoon?
nice and beautifull👍
During my best years I would rear about 150 of these moths annually. I got my best results feeding them on cherry, although they also did well on Basswood, birches and assorted maples.
May I ask which maples? I'm raising cecro for the first time. I'm in NW PA. We have birch by the buckets and tons of maples. I had a red maple in my yard and im trying my best to research which is best but all sites say is 'they eat maple' and nothing specific
@@rochellelee7461 Cecropia larvae feed on a broad range of hardwood leaves. I fed mine on Sugar Maple, Hard Maple and Silver Maple. They will not do well on cut food, however, and it's best to rear them on live branches. I reared most of mine on an enclosed, screened in porch, although I also reared a substantial number of them outdoors under netted branches. For rearing them indoors, I used 5-gal. plastic buckets with wooden lids. The lids had various diameter holes drilled through which the branches were inserted. Holes which were not in use were covered to prevent the caterpillars from crawling into the water and drowning. Any spaces were the branches went through the lids were plugged with cotton.
Hi there. I rescued a female from my job. She was torn up from a storm and camped out in my store for a few hours. I took her home to a more rural setting and let her free. She left a few eggs. I kept them. Theyve hatched today. I want to raise a couple with my child. Theyre now in butterfly habitats hanging from a tree in my yard. My questions are: How much leaves do they need per day? How long is each phase?
The Caterpillar when it's doing it final shed it like "GOD PLEASE HELP MEEEEEEEEEEE!"
Good job. Can i ask u ? I want to buy same eggs of this butterfly, Is there a website that sells it?
I have seen lots of strange things in my yard, and they turned into butterfly I have lost of monarchs know and some others that looks like bird drops, and they turned into big butterfly, their host plants is citrus
Does anyone know how long they stay in their cocoons? I have two that have been in for almost a year. Really hoping they are alright.
Why is the music midi-sound instead of a real performance?
Super.
Can you please tell me where this music came from?
The music for the Cecropia Metamorphosis Video is my own composition. It is written for violin, cello and piano. I put in the video as sort of a fill for lack of anything else. Actually, The video, music and added narration is used as a metaphor as Mankind takes wing in his own maturity and fulfills his destiny of a Golden Age of world peace.
what kind of environment and plants butterflies most like? i want more butterflies in my area
paramini08 That really depends on your where you live. The best way to attract butterflies is
1) Planting Native plants of your region. The butterflies around you are very much used to certain species of plants, and some of them are very specific on where they put their eggs. For instance, Monarchs only lay eggs on Asclepias or Milkweeds.
2) Flowers with a lot of nectar, such as Salvias or sages, will attract butterflies, but also bees and other pollinators.
Butterfly love milkweed from my experience if you want this kinda moth in your backyard then they love lilac
I read somewhere, that the only thing that moth retains from caterpillar is the digestive system. Does anyone know if this is correct. Thanks.
Steven... No, they don't keep their digestive system, although they keep their 3 main segments (Head, Thorax and abdomen).... Silk Moths do not eat as adults (they have no mouth parts!!), which is why the caterpillars grow so large to about 11 cm, so they have all the nutrients to survive as adults. I have bred these moths and have some cocoons in the fridge for 2021 spring emergence... they are more beautiful in real life too and lovely to rear! Hoping they will mate and lay some eggs next year :)
Praise to the designer and creator of such a beautiful moth,no longer bound to earth but with the ability to fly.The pupal stage in the caccoon reminded me of a mummy. All things were created by him and for him.Jesus is a creative genius.
Evolution and natural selection creates species. Please keep your religion out of this...
@@MrWhiteav6 As a biologist I believe that God has worked through natural selection. After all, we can't really explain why these things actually happen, why life is so precious to all of these organisms that they constantly adapt to preserve it. We just know the processes. Creationism and evolution shouldn't be mutually exclusive ideologies.
why people hate the music?
it made me think of old RPG game
Talmadge Skeen I thought of final fantasy when I heard the music 👍👍
cen ever these atacus atlas moth fly?
no.
does anyone know if these mots drink any fluids? if so what?
I always figured they get their water from the green tree leaves they eat 😊
Adult do not have mouthparts, but caterpillars tend to get all the water they need from the leaves they consume.
Butterflies 🦋 Colorful Magnificent Creatures, I love butterflies, God has created beautifully, let's love the creature ❤️👍💯❤️tırtıl 🐛 the leaf will eat, let's see how a butterfly 🦋, will turn into a butterfly 🐛, when the order comes 🐛 Butterfly 🦋 will continue its journey; The caterpillar was 🐛oldu; Now he is preparing to enter the cocoon; There will be pupae; change and be butterfly 🦋; We are the passengers of a long road like the same caterpillar. From the mother's womb to the world, from the world to the grave, from the grave to the berzah, from the apocalypse to the apocalypse, from the apocalypse, from the Hashir square to the balance, from the scales to the bridge, from the bridge to heaven or hell, my Lord keep all of us. O Lord, be pleased with us, do not leave us alone on this long journey, forgive our mistakes and flaws. You are forgiving, you like to forgive, forgive us too ... ❤️🤲❤️
ma chi ha scelto la musica?
At 9:15, it doesn't not like the taste of the pointy nub things.
I noticed that too😂😂 Maybe they are sharp
Who else feels like squeezing the colorful goo out of the spiky gooey parts I know that’s horrible I would never do it but still
Good video. The music feels a little weird though. But I guess it kind a bring some form of emotion in me. I feel like this music was used in an old movie (like in the 50’s where an old woman (perhaps a grandma) takes care of her grandchildren and then the time is fast forward to show the passage time.
I had to watch this at 2X speed, and it was still slow!
Born to blossom, bloom to perish.
All that preparation to get eaten by a bird
😂😂😂💀☠
Nature really is amazing and so intelligent. The caterpillar knows it has to do this 5 times without never being shown how. Humans on the other hand if we completely ignored our off spring they wouldn't make it. We have to teach every child how to live whereas nature... just knows. We might be top of the food chain and build our warm houses but take it all away and we are screwed 🤣 we are quite pathetic really
Nice video the music not so much 🐛🦋
A wonderful video. I raised a generation of Cecropia a few years ago. It was very rewarding. But, I have to agree with most comments, the music was terrible. I don't like music added to videos. The natural sounds are much, much better.
Nice video but enoying horrible music!
Annoying not Enoying, Either you are a kid, Or never went to school, And the music is good, 😌. HOW DID 16 PEOPLE ALREADY LIKED!!!??? Oh, this comment was 3 months ago? IS THAT ANCIENT TIMES WERE THIS MUSIC WAS BAD?!?!??! ANCIENT TIMES WERE PEOPLE CAN’T SPELL?!?! YOU CAN’T EVEN SPELL HARRY!!! ITS HARRY NOT HAIRY!!!!!! 😡🤬😡🤬😡🤬😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😡😡😡😡!!!! I AM SICK OF PEOPLE WHO CAN’T SPELL!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry🙇🏼♀️... THAT YOU ARE THE MOST DUMB PERSON EVER!!!!!!!!!!!
+Jose Angelo Santos
So what if the guy who commented that was actually a kid and you are still shouting at him? he is just doing a really small mistake and you have soul to shout at him? he did a really small mistake and you are just going to hurt his feelings huh? if he was actually a kid and you shouted at him like that i recommend you never becoming a parent. And all people in this world also make mistakes too... By i mean mistake it means a very bad thing you did. And that bad grammar who commented the nice video but enoying horrible music only made very small bad thing not a very bad thing and if that was not a kid then he was just probably having some problems with his keybourd probably has his A and E key swithed places i agree tho he is a bad grammar but dont say mean things like that just say "Check Your Grammar"

Good god, how was this 2010 shit in 2018
Fascinating. But the music is bloody awful.
not into THAT music!!!!!
The music was horrible!..... I had to prematurely turn the video off
Why not just turn the volume off 🤔 they did not speak during any of the video anyways.
Mejor se hubiera llamado musica para dormir!! Q aburrido video
Holy Shizbott that music is awful! Beautiful camerawork but that music is a mix between a dentist drill and being trapped in a prison for the mentally insane.
Silence is better then this music
Oi Buffalo Bill get better music
horrible music choice
Ewww just Ewwwww
The music is obnoxious!
nice and beautifull👍
