Finding the Limit of this Wood Chipper

- Taking care of some long-overdue chores today out in the woods where I've got piles and piles of logs and sawmill slab wood that is getting in the way. My power take off on my tractor keeps the Woodland Mills WC68 wood chipper spinning today as I feed the chipper with as much material as it will take. Assuming the tractor has the power to turn the chipper, I'm feeding as big of a piece of wood into it as it will take. Check out the chip pile and how fast it grows. Sure is nice having some nice wood chips to spread about without having to open my wallet to buy them. If you've got debris like I do floating around your property, you'll surely relate to the uses that I find for this thing. Glad you're all along for the ride today, here we go!

I think my opinions on pedos have confused the algorithm.
That is impressive how well that chipper handles the larger material.
Sure get's things done in a hurry which is great. I even think this tractor could take some bigger material if I had a slightly larger chipper

Hello Sandy. It looks like the limits of the chipper is the feed opening or the amount of fuel in the tank for the tractor. Do the blades on the chipper have multiple sides to use before sharpening or is it just the one side. Pulling in forward to place the log loader would make for an easier time, but you have no problem backing it in. Have good days! (I thought the snow would have been gone by now.)
The blades can be reversed. There's 4 of those blades on the flywheel in total.
Love wood chips almost as much as potato chips...so fun turning what's basically trash into something useful!
It is a lot of fun. I find it's a great option to take. care of the slab wood that seems to build up and up

awesome video. Maybe next time you could stretch some kind of bag over a an IBC cage and have the nozzle shoot the chips into it? that way its all contained and you can take it where you need it easier

I use the same model chipper here in Queensland, Australia and I am impressed with its performance, but it would never handle six inches of most of our hardwoods. Just BANG! And the sheer bolt is gone again!🤪 Even at low feed speeds I stick to four inches now.😁
Man that thing's a beast! I have a tiny electric chipper that worked great for my last property - only 1 acre so I only had to deal with branches that came down during storms. Now I have approx 17 acres of forest that's in desperate need of tidying up. I'd love to use the chips on trails but my wee electric one isn't gonna cut it LOL
My dreams of buying a sawmill has been put off for a while, so maybe I'll invest in a bigger chipper in the meantime. There's a lot of dead, useless trees here and fire ban is still on where I am, chipping seems like an ideal plan.
I hear ya Liz. Still a fire back on where I am as well. I'm trying to keep the woods safe from flames and still be nervous. The chippers sure do get alot of use I find

Great Video. Pile of chips to soak up the muddy trails and clean up the mill yard. Eventually the chips will turn into really good soil down the road. No point in having all the fun yourself. Inviting Dad in on the chipping goes a long way to dispel the remnants of winter.

Sandy you look to be a CHIPPER off the old block sorry should have warned you Dad joke you do pretty good chipping you thought of being in a Chippendale escapade sorry once again Dad joke but for real what if you made room for that chipper and the tractor at the end of your sawmill running it at the same time you could chip away your spoils and not have to go back and cause more work for yourself I am an advocate of not working twice get it done once but as a UA-camr that would be become a problem because you have to deal with noise pollution in your video but in the real world it would make a lot of sense because you would combine two jobs in one scene or I should probably say in one procedure you would cut your wood and then chip your spoiled in a one transaction I don't know someone who wants to get things done fast but I bring this up because I had to work with somebody who we are removing debris instead of taking the the debris straight from the ground to a trailer that is ready to accept the debris they did A to C then go to A to B the chair is right there in front of them but instead of taking the debris from the ground to the trailer is side to park it in the middle of the whole project that's a waste of time and that's a waste of money why because you could have went from a straight from the ground to be the trailer would they decided park that debris on the ground this isn't just waste money this is a waste of personal energy

Suggestion for possible $ return wood chips especially untreated organic good chicken coop and pen floor bedding or addition to raised gardening beds also mixed into composting piles with manure and straw and other organic media I know you fill soft spots on trails just know that there is value in good clean chips .
Consider chipping into a trailer preferably one that has dumping feature

What needs to be adjusted so you don't have to stand next to the hopper and hold the orange safety bar out in the forward position? I know you have all the PTO HP you need so it can't be a HP thing. I see about 1/2 the UA-cams with folks holding it out on this chipper and the other half not at all. The Woodland Mills UA-cam for this chipper the demonstration person does 25 foot/6 inch logs and never touches the orange bar.
Vibrations can cause the red handle to move when you don’t want it to but the bolts holding it on can be tightened slightly to fix this

Is there an adjustment to keep that safety bar from tripping requiring you hold it while chipping larger pieces?
Usually it doesn't trip unless the two bolts holding the handle on get loose. I've been meaning to tighten them up
I just bought the WC 88 and it says there is an adjustment nut near some valve body, I’ve yet to try it but I’ve seen other posts that says it’s adjustable

Wood chips so versatile if you don't have an HLA Kenny from North Carolina. Be safe. Wear safety glasses and no loose clothes around that chipper or any equipment

I have the same chipper. I find the limit on 19 hp on the PTO with 4" hardwood or larger on higher infeed speeds. It also tends to clog with pine branches that have many small branches (e.g., tops of trees).
Dig a hole , fairly large and burn it
In the right conditions this may work well but unfortunately the wood piles up so quick for me and the risk of forest fire is so high that it wouldnt' be possible in my situation

Luckily HOA's aren't common in Canada, they're a bit more prevalent in the western provinces but in Ontario they're usually limited to condominiums and fancier "gated communities". Sandy definitely won't have to worry about HOA where he is.
I feel bad for any of you stuck with one...they sound like a nightmare!

Wonder if essentially a tall saw horse could help support the wood as a ramp so you don’t have to hold on or guide the wood by hand as much?
Or some other ramp like built out of a metal roofing sheet

HEY, Sandy, you only said half of the story. Ain't nuthin' in this world, better than spending a day with the... OLE MAN..., doing what guy's like to do! Some of my best times are times that Dad and I did things together. Maybe that's why I so enjoy working on my nephews ranch with him... giving him that experience he never had with his dad. Sure would make it nice to park right next to a pile of brush or scrap wood and turn it into something useful. Especially when you can move it with your loader bucket. That would really save the back.
For sure Brad. As I get older I'm trying to come up with more ways to use my equipment when in the past I probably would have just used my muscle
I have a Wallenstein chipper. The most incompetent I have. There is no burning of brush out here for obvious reasons. The chips I use and spread on the land. It helps with the drainage and breaks down the clay. We have much better drainage. Your projects are moving along nicely. Enjoy life.

Good afternoon Sandy looks like your dad was enjoying seeing that trashy wood stuff into wood chips and yes it works great in mud holes and never really give it a tough with the dust but yes I bet it help to keep it down by the way your crate that you are using for slat but it on a pilet and make where you could dump it when full set your metal one on top of pilet hinges in between strap to the fork pick and go dump it where it would be easy access with the chipper just a tough have a great day

I have the WC88 model and the 50hp Kioti it's a beast and chips hardwood with ease.
I was torn between that wc68 and wc88. I'm still not sure if I could've used the wc88 but I think if my tractor would do that, I would go for that size as well
some of that stuff looked good enough to screw to outside of a plank cabin to kinda look like a rustic log cabin.

I hear ya there John. Lots of people around me trying to sell slab wood as well but it's going for so cheap if it sells at all that it'd cost me money to collect it, and move it to a spot someone could pick it up I"d imagine

Everybody needs a cleanup day and looks like the wood chipper made short work of those slabs and small logs really changed the looks around the mill Great video Sandy.

I’m thinking about buying the larger chipper, the 88 I think it’s called. I don’t plan on chipping bigger logs, I’d use them for firewood or timber but I reason the larger chipper would jam up less than a smaller one. However watching the 68 in action shows it is very capable. My tractor is rated at 42hp at the PTO.

Get the 88 it spins faster which means more air flow
Hi Karl, I think if your tractor can handle the 88 I'd go for that one as well. Your tractor has a good 10hp more at the pto so I"d imagine you'd be fine. Mine would be pushing it I think
@@sawingwithsandy the reason I’d like to buy a wood chipper is different. On my place we have an orchard of macadamia trees. One of the best ways to both enrich the soil and to suppress grass around each tree is to mulch them with wood chip. Wood chip has to be bought and costs a bit of money. So it would be good to chip up pruned limbs from trees and also chip up other vegetation and use the chips.
On the other hand chipping vegetation takes time, effort, the investment in a chipper and diesel. It is convenient and easy to have five truck loads of wood chip to be delivered. So I’m not sure about how to go. If I do get a chipper I’m pretty sure I’ll get a Wood Land chipper.
@@kdegraa how do you deal the limbs now?
In a orchard setting I’d drive up a row, stop with the discharge chute pointing at the base of a tree, then clean up cut limbs from behind the tractor back about 20’.
Move tractor forward and repeat
Only picking up limbs once
I should add, these wood chippers are great at dealing with limbs, they are not great at making a truck load of chips
Example 40hp tractor + wc68 + 2 people made 20 yards of pine chips in 6 hours
I watched you chip last year, that is a great tool to have, those chips should take care of a lot of muddy trails. KNG365 (Keep Me Going 365) Cheers! Jla
