Yeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! Thank you for uploading. This is one of my favourite Sherlock Holmes movies. The look that Sherlock Holmes, Jeremy Brett gives that old man who weeps, is a studying look of clinical contempt. More splendour!
I'll always remember "The Solitary Cyclist" foldly: It was the first Sherlock Holmes adventure I ever read...and from that point on, I WAS HOOKED--I identified SO MUCH with Holmes, I couldnt' get enough of his adventures with his best friend Dr. Watson, the ver-kind Mrs. Hudson, and his competitor, Inspector Lestrade. And I'm an English Major now...and I suppose I owe some of that to Holmes, Warson,a nd Sir Arthur Conan Doyle! (Oh, and to Jeremy Brett, for playing my hero PERFECTLY!)
Jeremy Brett is SO perfect. I could watch this all day. Well, to be honest I could just look at his face all day)) The most handsome man I've ever seen.
Thank you Dragonknight!!! I like Sherlock Holmes since my Childhood. I'm 40 now but still get the thrill out of any episode of Sherlock. Off course no one for me came to be as close to be Sherlock as the actor Jermoy....I still believe he is the one and only True Sherlock Holmes out of the authors book!!!...
Jeremy Brett, for my vote. He personifies the character. I've been a fan for over six years, and I read the stories when I was a girl. I can't read them now without picturing Brett's lovely face. He was and will always be the definitive Holmes in my mind. There's nobody like him.
Gahhhhh! Jeremy Brett! Those huge blue-green eyes, tall and skinny figure, energetic and playful face, a voice that's both deep and light...He was such a beautiful person. I am 16 and in love with Brett. :) He and Downey Jr. (yes, he was a VERY good Holmes, so don't criticize unless you see the movie) are my favorite, although I think Brett was obviously the very best.
woa this is crazy, like seriously crazy, I remember watching this ages ago when it first screened and I was seriously freaked out. I've always remembered that one scene of the cyclist dissapearing and nothing else. Thanks so much for putting this up!
What a great incarnation of my favorite book character of all times, mr. Sherlock Holmes, I love every single story, and I think this is the Sherlock Holmes I was searching for. :)
I just love him ive read all the books and watched all the episodes of Jeremey Brett's version like 6 times some more and I love him Ive also seen Rupert Everetts version and he closely follows Jeremy
Because they are fully formed characterizations, with internal lives and motivations. Brett was a study in finely observed acting. His Holmesis a human being: proud, dissatisfied, mercurial, sexually complex, manic, languid and sensitive. And Burke's Watson is the perfect wing-man; not some bumbling fool but a smart, loyal, honorable Doctor who balances out Holmes' less sociable aspects with a kind, gentlemanly demeanour.
I'd say Jeremy Brett comes the closest to being Holmes as Conan Doyle imagined him, and so do the two actors who played Watson in the series. And Eric Porter's Moriarty brings the Professor to evil life. The whole series had very good actors.
I love them, and I can learn a lot of english and have fun at the same time =) This character is really fantastic, I admire that kind of intelligence xD lol While reading the books I can't stop imagining Hugh Laurie as Sherlock ^^
i cannot even begin to comprehend how anyone even thinks that Jeremy Brett isent the greatest holmes ever.... his rendition is flawless, he was Holmes, that says it all.
If you think about it, Sherlock Holmes is a genius. Plus, if a case isn't interesting enough, he won't follow up on it. Great plots behind each case too.
I have "Bohemia" and "Naval Treaty" with Brett/Burke. I don't think I can upload it to The Tube here, but if I can provide a link elsewhere soon I'll note it to you.
Jeremy Brett did an excellent job as Holmes, but Basil Rathbone is still considered the definitive Holmes to this day. For most people it seems to come down to which one they saw first. To argue about it is a bit like arguing about whether Strawberries are better than Blackberries.
Watson: "Slight ruffling on the sides of the soles, caused by the friction of the pedals." Holmes: *Hey! That's my shtick, back off!* "Excellent Watson."
@RPenta Oh,I like Basil, actually, but there are only two flawless Sherlocks for me: Vasily Livanov and Jeremy Brett. The most amazing and adorable Watson is Vitaly Solomin. And my favourite screen versions are Granada's and Lenfilm's.I think that these two versions are great pleasure to watch, especially for sherlockians.
i remember reading the book in middle school, doesn't the 2 guys rob her house or somethin while shes on her way to the piano lesson, and woodley follows her or somethin? i forget, ill watch part 2. lol
Its just you. Sheldon is an idiot who needs to shape the world like he wants ... Sherlock (in this incarnation) is brilliant and accepts the world as it is and simply ignores what he doesnt like.
the new sherlock movies are kind of better in a way but i don't know about the classic holmes...the books is really good, and watson in the new movie looked how i thought he would be
Agreed. Bathbone was good, but his portrayal isn't as human as Brett's. In Rathbone, we see the 'classic' Holmes. But with Brett, we see Holmes the human being.
It doesn't matter; Rathbone didn't even film any accurate Holmes stories; his were all corruptions and Hollywood bowdlerizations; Brett at least has the dignity of performing Holmes almost exactly as Doyle wrote him in accurate dramatizations.
@allyndeimos The Sign of Four Watson "Then how in the name of all that is wonderful did you get these facts?" (Holmes has given Watson the entire family history of his own brother by looking at his late brothers pocket watch, Watson is astonished) Holmes "Ah, that is good luck. I could only say what was the balance of probability. I did not expect to be so accurate" W "But it was not mere guess-work?" H "No no: I never guess. It is a shocking habit-destructive to the logical faculty"
Although I personally prefer Vasily Livanov as Holmes and Vitaly Solomin as Watson,I have to say that Brett is AMAZING!But this Dr.Watson...he looks like an old walrus. He's not a Canon Watson imho.I love this series, but only because of Jeremy.
Greetings from New Orleans. The Solitary Cyclist is my favorite of all the Holmes stories! Stalking occurred in the Victorian Age as well as today.
Jeremy Brett is the best Sherlock. I really miss him. I like the fact that they stayed in the Victorian era.
he impersonated the character perffectly, even Conan Doyle himself would love his characterization
I like that Holmes is a little on the abrasive side...true to his literary character. Love it!
Yeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

i think no one plays this role better than jeremy brett...he gives the character the personality we imagin when he read in the stories
Jeremy Brett is SO perfect. I could watch this all day. Well, to be honest I could just look at his face all day)) The most handsome man I've ever seen.

At 3:50 he wipes his hands subtly on the table-cloth after touching her. Brett had a gift for playing Holmes.
Quite a detail!
Wow!! How observant of you... But why did he do so?
Love it when he says:
"I never guess!" ... great expression and composure!!
Gahhhhh! Jeremy Brett! Those huge blue-green eyes, tall and skinny figure, energetic and playful face, a voice that's both deep and light...He was such a beautiful person. I like the new Sherlock but honestly I like this version better. Jeremy Brett portrayed Sherlock the best, like in the book.
Jeremy Brett is best. I like how these old ones are more down to earth and the pace is better than the newer ones.
This and the man, Jeremy Brett, is truly amazing....
A true artisan for the Doyle legacy
I simply adore the series. Thanks a lot for posting this.
Marvelous beginning! I was hooked at once! :D
yes indeed...jeremy brett is THE sherlock holmes....
thanks for putting this up!!!
GOD why is there so much spam on all these episodes?
But Sherlock holmes is so perfect here! Just gorgeous. Love him, Jeremy Brett a wonderful actor.
What a great incarnation of my favorite book character of all times, mr. Sherlock Holmes, I love every single story, and I think this is the Sherlock Holmes I was searching for. :)
Jeremy Brett was excellent and is sadly missed! Best Holmes I`ve seen.
"There is a spirituality about the face, however, which the typwriter does not generate; the lady is a musician"
One of my favorite Holmes quotations
At 4:47 Watson asks Holmes if he remembers the Old Imperial. Holmes's response is classic.
He's like yeah, shut up Watson.
"Mrs.Hudson, this is not a convenient moment. " After watching Miss Smith, "Hmm... if the client is beautiful, I can delay the chemical reaction." 😀
I just love him ive read all the books and watched all the episodes of Jeremey Brett's version like 6 times some more and I love him Ive also seen Rupert Everetts version and he closely follows Jeremy

Brett had the best voice of any actor, living or dead.
Great Sherlock Holmes. Don't just watch his movies or episodes, try reading his books too.
"Ms.Smith...I never guess"
I think that one line sums up Holmes entire career quite nicly and perhaps Inadequately as well.
Jeremy brett is a great actor
"Oh perhaps you could delay your chemical reaction" HILARIOUS
In the 1979 Movie :Murder by Decree, Christopher Plummer is excellent as Holmes. James Mason is also very good as Watson.
Jeremy Brett is such a good actor.
brett looks so young and pretty in this one. i think i'm in loooove
I'd say Jeremy Brett comes the closest to being Holmes as Conan Doyle imagined him, and so do the two actors who played Watson in the series. And Eric Porter's Moriarty brings the Professor to evil life. The whole series had very good actors.
this is the BEST Sherlock Holmes ever!!
Never realized until today that Carruthers is John Castle, who I know from The Lion in Winter and I, Claudius. Hell yeah.
I watch this mostly because theres captions. And these adds for the epic win. haha.
"Miss Smith...I never guess."
Ha! Bravo, Mr. Holmes.
And another one bites the dust. Class act by Brett.
RE: 2:41...the look on holmes' face is classic
"On second thoughts..." its like, haha
@Amogh130997 Absolutely, The Doyle stories are essential and IMHO no TV or film adaptation can compare to reading and discovering them for yourself.
I find this super calming tbh
I love them, and I can learn a lot of english and have fun at the same time =)
This character is really fantastic, I admire that kind of intelligence xD
lol While reading the books I can't stop imagining Hugh Laurie as Sherlock ^^
i cannot even begin to comprehend how anyone even thinks that Jeremy Brett isent the greatest holmes ever.... his rendition is flawless, he was Holmes, that says it all.
i wish i had had the opporttunity of having met this man
"Perhaps you could, delay, your chemical reaction Holmes?"
Ha ha. =D
I love Dr. Watson and his delicate manners
If you manage to provide a link elsewhere for the "Naval Treaty" I`d be grateful for a note too. It`s the only one I missed!
If you think about it, Sherlock Holmes is a genius. Plus, if a case isn't interesting enough, he won't follow up on it. Great plots behind each case too.
excellent!!! where is this from?
Sherlock was all over those hands , lol
I have "Bohemia" and "Naval Treaty" with Brett/Burke. I don't think I can upload it to The Tube here, but if I can provide a link elsewhere soon I'll note it to you.
Thanks for sharing!

I prefer this version as it remains in the original Victorian Era
100 hundred % in agreement w/you! a truly magnificient man!
may be i am one of the biggest sherlock holmes fans.........
5 stars
Extremely unique absolutely excellent unbelievablely unique
Just cant get used to anyone playing Sherlock and Watson except Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.
How did she keep those long skirts from catching on the bicycle chain?
Wow, this has got to be one of the very best episodes! I think Holmes rather liked this girl, eh?
Watson: "Slight ruffling on the sides of the soles, caused by the friction of the pedals."
Holmes: *Hey! That's my shtick, back off!* "Excellent Watson."
I own them all, as well as all of the Brett stories on DVD :D
シャーロックホームズは確か日本語版のが図書館にあったから借りてこようかなあ。
@RPenta Oh,I like Basil, actually, but there are only two flawless Sherlocks for me: Vasily Livanov and Jeremy Brett. The most amazing and adorable Watson is Vitaly Solomin. And my favourite screen versions are Granada's and Lenfilm's.I think that these two versions are great pleasure to watch, especially for sherlockians.
Diggin' the *gasp*, Watson! XD
I like this Holmes as much as the Basil Rathbone Holmes!
Amen Kristinesbluebird!
UA-cam really needs to have some sort of policy about nonstop spam like this.
I love how Holmes wipes his hands on the tablecloth after touching Miss Smith's hands. He's such a ladies' man!
4:07, yes mr.homes, i teach painting. -- the spirit of the face. --
"Perhaps you could... uh, delay your chemical reaction, Holmes." I think Watson has his own chemical reaction going on somewhere.
yep. with robert downey jr. as holmes, jude law as watson, and rachel mcadams as adler... :D
but dunno which story they will take as the plot...
i remember reading the book in middle school, doesn't the 2 guys rob her house or somethin while shes on her way to the piano lesson, and woodley follows her or somethin? i forget, ill watch part 2. lol
RIP Edward Hardwicke. died May, 2011.
@silverbud oh, i must. is it on youtube?
can u please tell me where did you find this videos? did u buy them or which site
Have you ever heard of "Amazon"? You might want to try "co.uk" ... but beware the "region coding" of DVDs if you are from non-europe.
RE: I love how Holmes wipes his hands on the tablecloth after touching Miss Smith's hands. He's such a ladies' man!
EXCELLENT...BRILLIANT
What is the title of the piano piece played by the piano teacher in the middle of the episode?
benedict cumberbatch, as BBC!Sherlock also says 'I never guess.' does that line show up in some canon story?
hi, can you tell me where the street where it was filmed the solitary cyclist with Jeremy Brett ??
You mean the road that the lady cycles along or the street that is supposed to be Baker Street?
Hi, no baker street, the video path, the exact point which is located in Delamere Forest
I have no idea where exactly in Delamere Forest it was filmed but it looks like one of the actual cycle paths that are used today...
who played the best sherlock holmes?
when Holmes touches Violet's chin...I said to myself, "oh, I could have fainted in ecstasy !" hehe
@Thr89ust Holmes was a hero of sorts. He's fits almost every criterion for the Byronic hero archetype.
Sherlock Holmes reminds me of Sheldon Cooper from big bang theory, is this just me?
Its just you. Sheldon is an idiot who needs to shape the world like he wants ... Sherlock (in this incarnation) is brilliant and accepts the world as it is and simply ignores what he doesnt like.
NO & ignore unkind comment from below. He is somewhat reminiscent of Sheldon.
they both are gay
Brett is not gay
the new sherlock movies are kind of better in a way but i don't know about the classic holmes...the books is really good, and watson in the new movie looked how i thought he would be
I love the kid at 1:07...
Hey its Ms. Marple's Nephew!
i do believe it simply stays light a bit later there.
Agreed. Bathbone was good, but his portrayal isn't as human as Brett's. In Rathbone, we see the 'classic' Holmes. But with Brett, we see Holmes the human being.
Jeremy Brett was excellent as was Rathbone, Cushing was good aswell
Fingers do get a flat portion from playing the piano. I know because it's happened to me and I play piano. nyaa.
It doesn't matter; Rathbone didn't even film any accurate Holmes stories; his were all corruptions and Hollywood bowdlerizations; Brett at least has the dignity of performing Holmes almost exactly as Doyle wrote him in accurate dramatizations.
@allaria8700 What about basil rathbone?
that's about 75,000 dollars. (I don't know the actual figure, the american dollar is really haywire right now.)
@allyndeimos
The Sign of Four

W "But it was not mere guess-work?"
H "No no: I never guess. It is a shocking habit-destructive to the logical faculty"
Bloody hell, they don't half manhandle her, do they? :D
Although I personally prefer Vasily Livanov as Holmes and Vitaly Solomin as Watson,I have to say that Brett is AMAZING!But this Dr.Watson...he looks like an old walrus. He's not a Canon Watson imho.I love this series, but only because of Jeremy.
They're so young!
the baker street is in london
