not sure what version you have but my 400 connect easily to my iphone & has wifi for updating, I agree that on 1st power up if your indoors it can take a minute or so to boot, but other than that no issue for upgrading.

I have a used TomTom 1. Yep, one of the old car ones. It cost £15 off eBay, sits inside a £6 waterproof case and it's as loud as hell. It charges from a £3 usb plumbed into my battery. In towns abroad I can see people looking as it shouts out directions. Anyway, the odd road has changed but it always gets me there and for less than £25. Why am I telling you this? Because I'm buying a 400 or 550 and I'm needing convinced.

I'm still well satisfied with my 400. Battery doesn't last much anymore, but the Satnav is hardwired to the bike so it doesn't matter. I update the maps before a long trip anyway and sometimes when it's convenient. Love it. But it is slow - and needs a bit of patience.

I'm using still a 40 and is for sure faster then the 400 you are showing. Also I'm wondering what is wrong with a USB cable. Who is going to update in the middle of the forrest? An update should be done a few days before you are going on and a big trip, not when you are on the road. You conclusion however is fine, if you have a 4xx you really don't need to up grade.

Thanks for a complete description. Good job! Nevertheless, i was close to sign for the 550. Unfortunately, packages are not equal. With the 410, you have "world map package" and update for free, only Europe for the 550... And " Danger Zone" and update for free and you have to pay a subscription per month for the 550... It's a choice.. wait for the slower and get money back... or a quicker loading and refreshing map... But thanks again for your investment to share your choice.

That might explain why my TomTom 400 has condensation inside the glass.
When the battery started to really drop off in performance after about 4 years, I pulled the unit apart (oops, that was a mistake) to see if I could replace the battery.
With the rubber shock absorbers in my Touratech TomTom mount having degraded after nearly 5 years of ownership (causing annoying flipping between portrait and landscape display), I think I’ll just buy the TomTom 550 and replacement lockable Touratech mount.
