The original was made by the Charlie Daniel's Band. Charlie Daniels just died recently, so probably why it's been covered a few times.

If you love Nickelback, own it. A friend of mine allowed me to listen to a CD she had. While there are some ballad-style songs I like from them, I go for the more fast-paced, hard-hitting songs of theirs.
That might've been All the Right Reasons since about 45% of the album are ballads, try Feed the Machine.

im super late to reply but the hate is (was?) because their music is (used to be?) very generic and "bland" and also the singer acted like an asshole during some shows or something, but thats just how rockstars are if u ask me

"Tribute" was pretty obviously inspired, story-wise, by the original of this song.
Came to see what you thought about the song, stayed for the content.
Its a great cover, but I think I still prefer the Steve Ouimette version as its much more guitar heavy imo, plus the fact Steve Ouimette is an amazing musician.
But the classic version is just brilliant considering it was on a fiddle (including a broken string in a live version at the Ole Opry). RIP Charlie Daniels.

Awesome! Aussie’s doing nickelback reviews. I don’t get this very often in the states. I’m from GA, I also been a nickelback guy since 01. I don’t get into the rock or pop ballads, but I’m still a fan of their heavy sound just like this bad ass devil went to GA cover. I give it 10/10.
If you want to know why they are hated, Anthony Fantano made a video on it if you both are curious enough to watch. Anyways, this is a damn good cover, been covered so many times tho lol. I think I prefer the Charlie Daniels original also The Devil Went down to Jamaica cover, cause that's pretty funny

I have bin 2 times to a concert of nickelback and it was great . because they are live so good. But this cover is a nother level . i love this metal side of them. Please do this more nickelback. And people how say that they suck are poeple whit no own opinion . in holland we say walkalongs (meelopers) hahaa. Or just follow the rest . not me. Nickelback is great. Realy.
Yo to be honest with you guys I like Nickelback I don't know why they get all this hate but in my opinion I think they get a lot of hate because they make songs people can relate to that's my opinion I think they get a lot of hate because they make songs a lot of people can relate to and they don't want to admit it and they're embarrassed to admit that they can relate to the song
This is indeed a great song. The one thing I will stress is that every guitar note you heard in that song was done by a guy by the name of Dave Martone, Nickelback did not play a single guitar in this song. So when you say Nickelback shreds, it's a tiny bit misleading.

I don't understand the hate for Nickleback, their songs are catchy. Some say they are similar etc, but if they are so what? If you like them, listen to them, if you don't, don't listen to them, why the hate, besides pop in general is kinda all the same, same chords, same topics.... what did they do to deserve so much negative attention? :D
Totally agree with everything you said. I enjoy virtually everything I have heard from Nickelback - heavy or soft.
