I didn't know he'd died. I live in italy and miss a few things, but something Important like a legend like Nicholas Parsons dying! Such a loss for radio 4 and lovers of Just a Minute not just in this country but all over the world...
He may have passed on, but this wonderful man is still making new fans, like myself, every single day. I recently discovered this program and I love everything about it and Nicolas was one of the sweetest people ever.
Had many a happy moment listening to Clerment, Kenneth and Derek on Just a Minute driving to work early morning. Great to see the tv series...fantastic humour.
Paul: You can't take your eyes off me, can you? Julian: You are the only heterosexual on this panel. Paul: Is that right, Nicholas? You GOTTA love those two.
I love this episode. It's actually British light comedy at its very finest. The team are a dream, and don't underestimate Parsons, whose perfect timing and eternal freshness were learned over many years as a 'straight man' to 60s comedian Arthur Haynes. I remember being made to stay up late to watch my godfather on TV. Raise your glasses to a unique and treasured English master of his craft.
I love listening to this on the radio if I can... being in Canada makes it hard to find but there's something about watching it. they all move just the way I pictured they would.
Thanks so much for posting these. Looks like they finally got it right for TV after one or two failed attempts (on ITV if memory serves). Looking out for the show with Hawks, Perkins and Norton which was very good. They are all great and the usually over-competitive and dominating Merton was more subdued for much of it.
I didn't like the earlier TV episodes with the giant clock. No one really wants to watch the clock, and it was distracting. This series of TV episodes is wonderful and holds up with many viewings.
I think Russell Tovey did very well for a first timer, but I must say that if they had replaced him with Sue Perkins or Clement Freud they would have had my dreamteam lineup.
Does anyone know if Fry and Merton have buried the hatchet? It would be wonderful to see Fry on HIGNFY again, and Merton (and Hislop) would be great on QI. It's been almost 10 years...
They are tremendously generous with newcomers and teach them how to do better with the game. I don't think he could have had better tutors. :) It's about the entertainment value not the points. He wasn't put on against the others. They all play together. That's why I enjoy it so much.
@@dothedeed Paul Merton and Nicholas Parsons are definitely not gay and afaik not bisexual either. Julian Clary, Russell Tovey and Stephen Fry are all firmly on the gay side of the fence- although Fry is quite a bit closer to the centre of the Kinsey scale than Clary (Fry is very interested in breasts apparently, less interested in other... ladies' areas).
There must lots of versions by now, but Fry decided specifically to boycott HIGNFY, not the BBC or producers. I recall he was especially upset w/ Merton's insistence that Deayton be fired. Fry seemed to feel that he could have stayed if Merton had been less insistent and less public about it. The infamous "I stabbed him in the front" interview was uploaded here in the past, but I don't know if it still is. Much as I love Fry, I personally think Merton was right on that issue.
Stephen has appeared sporadically on Just a Minute as his busy schedule allows. He has made 29 appearances on the show over the past 25 years, his most recent was broadcast in early June 2017.
Anyone else think that Paul missed a trick many times there? He could have ripped it out of Nicholas for saying to Russell: "Lean forward because it looks like you're more involved" "They want you to continue in order to get some practice" Something like "Is that what you say to all the young men, Nicholas?" could have been quite funny!
RIP Nicolas, you brought so many smiles to so many people.

"I've been a straight man to many comedians, I know how to take it and come back" - Nicholas Parsons, the legend.
this show is a classic of british double entendre!! i love it.
Paul: You can't take your eyes off me, can you?
Julian: You are the only heterosexual on this panel.
Paul: Is that right, Nicholas?
You GOTTA love those two.

"Lean forward so it looks like you're more involved" 😂 A genius gentleman
Thanks a lot Nicholas Parsons.I have been enjoying your show since 1980s
Rest in peace Nicholas. You will be missed.

Paul is so quick witted

I endure this episode, only for beloved Stephen and Russell x
russell tovey has this look of adoration/admiration when Mr Fry is speaking. Don't we all?
I do adore this program but classic episodes are a bit hard to sit through these days, in the knowledge of what Clement did.
I have considered overdubbing his lines.
Anglophenia brought me here.
Thank You from NYC!
1:36 Wow, I’m very impressed with Fry’s linguistic skills.
Nicholas Parsons looks fantastic for 90.
Nicholas looks great for 190
This is amazing!
Stephen Fry is everyone's favourite uncle and Nicholas Parsons is everyone's favourite grandpa.
Well, mine at least :)
My fave radio show
Aha! So it's not just me then. I always keep thinking the colour balance on my monitors can't be set properly but most other stuff looks fine:-)
I took one look at the description and thought, "it's the gay episode!"
EXCELLENT lineup
Whatever it is below Mr Fry's nose but above his upper lip, it ought to be removed or chased away with the aid of insect repellent.
I think he was acting in a period drama at the time.
Dead slug, Baldrick showed him how.
good clean fun!
Stephen is going Melchett under his nose.
08:55 "Having been a straight man..."
Love Russel and Stephen. :D
None of them come near the original four on radio.
The Doctor would rock this game!
Which one?
David Tennant, he has appeared on this show
Not sure, but did Stephen grow a mustache?
Melchett
FRY, WOOT!
Did Stephen Fry just Reference friends with his "Moo Point" comment!? Amazing. 9.38
+lillyloo33 no, he said 'moot point' which is the correct phrase, the joke on friends was that joey thought it was 'moo point'
I think he said "moot point" as in a point which is debatable
I think Russell Tovey did very well for a first timer, but I must say that if they had replaced him with Sue Perkins or Clement Freud they would have had my dreamteam lineup.
Clement was dead by this point!
Replace Tovie with Brandreth for perfection!
Oberon's Paradox no
@@brad_8711 in light of subsequent revelations, thank God for that
Parsons was doing his damnedest there not to call Russell Tovey "boy".
Oh hesitation 9:27 and 12:42!
Just a minute

RIP legend :(
He looks like Robin Williams playing mrs doubtfire.☺️
As awesome as this episode is, I can't help but feel that it's a little unfair to put a first timer on against those three.
They are tremendously generous with newcomers and teach them how to do better with the game. I don't think he could have had better tutors. :) It's about the entertainment value not the points. He wasn't put on against the others. They all play together. That's why I enjoy it so much.
WHAT. A. PANEL!!!!!!
@PhantomObserver no, that's just some chocolate he had before the show
Russell repeated I a lot though.
+Tang0Fox1 They always cut the new guy have a little slack. Until they can find a running gag to tease him with. :D
+trdsf Ahh, ok. Thanks.
I think they tend not to challenge over repetitions of small words, unless they are repeated several times in quick succession.
There's a gay man for all tastes on that panel!
+Knappa22 are they all gay?

Ultimate camp line up would be Julian Clary, Graham Norton , Gyles Brandreth and Stephen Fry!
Stephen fry love him

I'm bored. Really bored.
Repitition of the word bored .
