This reflects my experience here in Japan 100%, Sayuri-san. I'm always asked at cash registers, and I always say 'nai desu'. Maybe something about me, though, stops them asking if I want to make one. If they do ask (very rarely) if I'd like to make one, I use a little gesture plus 'daijyoubu desu'. Great video for visitors to Japan who might be confused or overwhelmed by unexpected questions at the register.
I just came back from a trip to Japan and I definitely find everything said here in regards to point cards very accurate. Definitely waving your hand in front of yourself while saying 大丈夫です (Daijoubu desu) will help a lot of tourists get through some of these questions at the cash registers. I also notice, most stores will ask if you need a plastic bag or if you are carrying your own. At any rate, great video!
Glad to hear that the information in the video was helpful to you during your trip to Japan! Waving your hand and saying "Daijoubu desu" is a great way to handle unexpected questions /offers at cash registers, and Sure! it's also good to know that store staff often ask about plastic bags since 2020. Thanks for your feedback and for enjoying the video!
We need to teach this over here in America, I just had a elementary school aged child come into my store and say "Ay yo pops how much for a pack of newport cigarettes" while his friend tried to sneak around the isle to steal.

Haha.. “Not today” But what if she replied, “If not today, then when?”
