  • After ten years, we bring you this emotional 19 minute 'Vietnam' section of the 2011 National Memorial Day Concert in Washington DC. It is a powerful story about a fallen soldier whose daughter is present at the concert, and ends with Hayley Westenra's equally emotional performance of Pie Jesu, followed by a lone bugler playing 'taps'. We are told that Hayley asked to visit the actual memorial before the concert took place, that must have had quite an impact on her when she sang.
This new video places in its full and proper context Hayley's performance that's been available on this channel since 2012 at • Pie Jesu - Hayley West...
Those involved are: Michelle Baugh, daughter of Richard Githens who died in Vietnam when she was a baby, and his fellow soldier and friend Chuck Gregoire. Their moving story is told by actress AJ Cook and actor Gary Sinese.
Hayley's performance was summed up well by HWI member Bill R who watched it at the time:
"Hayley's performance of 'Pie Jesu' was a perfect finish to the very emotional story of a young woman's quest to learn about her father who was killed in Vietnam . Then to follow her performance with the lone bugle playing taps was very powerful. In my opinion, Hayley had the most difficult part of the concert to perform and she was outstanding."
Michelle herself posted a lovely comment on the concert and Hayley's part in it here on the HWI website: www.hayley-wes...
You can discuss or this video on the HWI forum at: hwi.proboards....

My husband served in Vietnam on a riverboat that had been sprayed with Agent Orange and because of that he had cancer that ate up his lungs and he had to carry air to breath. We had been married 51 years when he didn't want to live any more😢

Excellent and superb presentation of the effect of postwar scenario in a healing nature and the positive psychological intervention that the daughter has experienced and also the friend of this soldier .....

You grown up and your voice is much more wonderful Hayley since I left New Zealand and returned to the states in 2006. I pray you are also singing this for our brothers in Arms (The Anzacs), who never made it home.

Touching. I'm guessing most vets feel sad to be the ones to come home while others lost their lives there. My personal feeling at least.

I had a friend John VanDusen who was killed in Dong Ha, the evening of September 20, 1968. His daughter was born while he was there. All he had was a photo of her. He had never held her. Now she is 56 years old and never met her dad, just like the girl in this video.

I rember when President JFK, inspired people to join the Peace Corps. When I was old enough, I joined the Marine Corps. Young people today, in América, need inspration. I would reccomend them to join their Local VA Hospital. As a President, that's what I'd do. Inspire the Young... ❤❤❤
