- If you were to ask me what my favorite Live bait to catch Speckled trout with is, I would say a 3-4" croaker every time. Here along the gulf coast croakers are abundantly found just about anywhere and are fairly easy to catch yourself. If you can get a few dozen of these precious baits its almost guaranteed you will catch some speckled trout and other species as you'll see in this video!

No problem! Hookup ratio is better IMO when you hook them in the anal fin, however if you reel them in a time or two without getting a bite they will die quickly vs hooking in the nose

Great video Brandon. We used to do the same thing at the shoals. We would catch the croaker the east side of the D.I. Bridge and the big specs on the west side.

Catching big gator trout on croakers or pigfish is absolutely in the top three things I like to do. There is absolutlely nothing wrong using live bait ( croakers or pigfish or even finger mullet) to catch big trout. Live shrimp get eaten by to many trash fish. At $30 for a hundred shrimp, catching your own live bait only makes sense! Only a 2 fish limit here in Florida so I quit fishing for them till they recover. Awesome video, glad you included your wife.

DAT HOOKSET THOUG!!! I dont do a lot with live bait unless if Fishing for sheepshead and Mangroves but from time to time its nice catching a King of an LY or a flounder on a cig. Them was some nice Trout though I caught a huge JC on a white trout but I dont think I ever had a Speck eat one and one that big.

Thanks! And I just use a small “chicken rig” setup with a panfish hook. Small fishbite strips or small piece of dead shrimp will do the trick

Great one! I'm fishing a tournament this coming weekend and need to find croakers for big trout. They're hard to find in my area.
Hopefully you can find some! You could also try and get them the day before and keep an aerator on them overnight. Ive done that dozens of time
@@CaptCollier Yeah, it's a science keeping them alive. We had a method years ago where we used an oxygen bottle and an aquarium stone to oxygenate. Tough process. Thanks.

@Capt.Collier when you free line croakers, do you use braid with mono leader or all fluorocarbon line? Thanks
Either or is fine. I normally use braid with a couple feet of mono or flouro leader ties with an FG knot just because that’s what I have on all my inshore setups
I use croakers a lot for specks on grass flats and structure, what do you look for when you judging a beach to target specks?

@@CaptCollier thanks for the insight, that’s kind of what I figured, they needed some sort of structure to hold to. I’ll have to try fishing some sandy beaches here. Are beaches closer to passes or ones deeper in the bays better?

I won’t throw live bait for speckled trout, flounder or slot reds but I’ll use all the live bait in the world offshore. As I write this, it doesn’t even make sense to me. May get some live croaker and soak em Friday lol.

I don't mind live bait but being brought up on cooler loads of 17 inch golden croaker my dad and I cry everytime we see a trout fisherman using them for bait. It used to be nothing in Texas to catch 100 croaker. Now your lucky to catch 2. It's not just trout fisherman too, it's also bycatch in nets. I know trout are good but you get you a mess of croaker and that's the best fried fish filets in the gulf.
Yea them shrimpers can put a hurtin on them. Thankfully we have no shortage of them here in Bama. But we don’t catch a lot of bull croakers big enough to eat. They definitely arnt bad, comparable to redfish

Do you ever have issues with worms in big speckled trout and red fish in the summer?
Another reason why I don’t normally keep trout, but yes it’s usually a 50/50 chance they’ll have worms. They are harmless to us from what I hear though.
