You are correct that the leather is dipped into indigo as a boot after stitching and not dipped into indigo as a whole hide. I found a couple of blogs from 2014 to 2015 detailing the process used to make the original OSB indigo boot run. It's a really interesting read on the process they use to dip and rinse the leather until they get the wanted blue hue (it turned green during the first dip, which is hilarious to me).

As a fan of Japanese selvedge AND blue being my favorite color, I’d totally rock these! Something I’d do during the break in period would be to stick to jeans for the first few wears and get a whole pack of blue socks lol

If you really want to go all out you could get indigo dyed socks too. I have a pair. Even after a few years they still continue to bleed onto the lining and insoles of my sneakers.
Never tried them with my boots. Probably wouldn’t show up as much on tan leather lining

Orange sounds interesting, but you better be ready to deal with the transfer. I’ve dyed the white collar on my thorogoods with Selvedge jeans, I imagine this will work in reverse since the boots will also bleed and will be dying the inside of the orange pants.

Indigo along with cotton and tobacco was one of the three major cash crops of the pre-Civil War south.
There was big demand in Europe for its rich color and absorption capabilities with natural fabrics like wool, cotton, linen, and silk.

i've had these boots for a couple years and they have been a unique piece in my collection. i got them back when they used Japanese natural indigo and dainite soles. i never had the kind of transfer you were showing here in fact, i would say my previous iteration was much less saturated with a lighter starting point. they quickly developed a brown, neppy, speckled appearance. i guess i've always been somewhat hesitant to put together a wardrobe around blue boots.

Currently wearing my indigo boots from OSB. I got mine between 2015-2017. Not completely sure when in there though. My version has all eyelets and dainite soles. I really like them, though they are a unique boot that cant be worn for everything. The roughout leather tips you off to that idea though. I don't wear them hard or in instances they would get scuffed or teacored very much. So after 6-8 years of at least once a week wear they have started to have some of that natural leather peak through in the heels and toes. Getting a bit of a greenish tone. When it started I thought they just looked dirty where the dye was coming off but now that it is pushed through more they are looking much better. I definitely have some minor indigo dye left over on the inside of the boots. I dont however see any dye on the welt areas, though it could have been there at the start.
I'm very excited to keep wearing these and seeing the bigger high's and low's of the indigo and natural leather. I want to try some other soles as well, the dainite have been hard wearing and fine for most things. Though I dont like them much in winter as they slip more than expected, and the circles trap ice and drop it around the house when I walk in. Debating between V-Bar and Dr. Sole like these, I also have some cats paw heels I might put on these boots, I want them to go on the "right" boots.
I am a big fan of this last as well. I was very worried about them looking too bulbus before I got them, now they just seem great shaped. My outside toes stay straight for longer than normal and this last helps a lot for that. Sizing: I am a 12.5 on my left foot, 12 on the right. I got a 12D and it fits great to me.

Fun fact. you know shoe factory's, when you go to the assembly line and head over to the toe lasting area . You generally see big old steamers, steaming the hell out of uppers, steam is really good for this because it adds heat to the upper and moisture.
Shoes last better when they're hot and moist.
So yeah if this indigo gives up its die easily then I suspect that that heating steaming process would be enough to cause that overall bleeding of dyes to stitches etcetera.....
    hot and moist. :)

I have the Field Boot true-to-size; they feel a little roomy but nice, and I also have the Trench Boot a half-size-down, and they feel a little snug but pleasant. These look amazing! On a completely separate note, can you do a video on how to deal with heel slip? I recently bought a pair of Grant stone boots and the fit is snug on the sides but I'm experiencing a small degree of heel slip. Wanting to know the different options for fixing that.

i got a pair around year 2019. i haven’t worn them enough to comment on fading, but they are very comfortable, and look great. i own maybe 8+ of their boots. they have great customer service and all their shoes are repairable, by the maker and very comfy and unique.

  • @Dennis-vh8tz

They say it's vat dyed, so my guess would be that they dye the hides before cutting them. The dye is dissolved in water and probably penetrates the flesh side of the leather more easily than the grain side, with the latter mostly flaking/wearing off as it's handled throughout manufacturing. The blue everywhere probably comes from the fingers of the people making the boots. I agree with the chorus that these are too special to cut up - for that there are many other Oak Street boots made from more common leathers.

For the price you pay, I'd expect them to make sure the heel lays flat rather than lifting off like that. I've had to return boots that had that issue since they create a pressure point when you stand in them.
