Thank you so much. I hope it was helpful. The more your practice drawing and are able to have someone point out your mistakes and or find them you're self the faster your overall proportions accuracy will come. Looking forward to seeing how you are able to apply the info.

hello. i really like constructing things and measuring things in perspective but ive been told my figure proportions are bad when i pose my figures. they usually line up with the Loomis charts when i draw them from imagination from the front but seem to break down when i pose my figures. I was told by a friend to do these measured life drawings but i have a hard time dropping 3D forms and constructing the anatomy in favor of measured 2D shapes. it feels really wrong ignoring the 3D volumes. (Do you have any input on this?)
So i was wondering, do you think improving my freehand perspective would be a sufficient substudie for this or is that unrelated?

Thank you for the thoughtful comment. Recently I have been thinking deeply one this issue of 3D construction and 2D visual observation. Sounds like you have a very good understanding to the 3D aspect, the conceptual construction. Thats great!
Your friends may have noticed that you may have an issue with conceptual contamination. This is when your mind projects its conceptions over all things an artist observes. Nearly all artist have an issue with this, I did for a very long time. Honestly I still work on it constantly.
You could consider trying to observe the forms in another way to help deepen your understanding of accurate proportion. Looking at the forms with angles or large shapes will get you there. It really helped me in my early development.
The Charles Bargue drawing book is a very effective method at fixing any conceptual contamination issues. If you tray some copies of his drawing, over time you will gain a deeper understanding of accuracy. With this accuracy you can begin to develop a yin yang thinking. This can allow your mind to switch back and forth from construction drawing to observation drawing. When you can move back and forth between these to thinkings you will really start to get some really dynamic images.
I hope this helps. As I am not seeing your work or watching you in a studio drawing in front of me I am making a few assumptions. If my comments are off please accept my apologies. Good luck with your drawing and learning.

How do you measure with the same pencil you draw with? I have to draw and measure at the same time and my brain can't comprehend it!

Thanks for the question. Try and use the measurements as a check. So draw as you would normally and then check the accuracy of your proportions and placements with the measurement techniques. Good luck.
