    I've know I wanted to become a vet since I was 6. Its been one of the only things motivating me to continue getting good grades. My family don't like the idea of having pets, so im planning on volunteering at a animal shelter and hospitals to gain Experience. I'm planning on majoring in zoology once I enter college.

    I'm currently a sophomore in high school, but I'm taking three vet-related classes this year, 2 next year, and one my Senior year (unless more classes are added to our curriculum). As soon as we get the OK by our school's principal, students will be able to register their animals with the school to be able to bring them to class for a hands-on experience. Although we're not too far into the school year, I am already excited to start learning as much as I can before attending a college. I do not expect to apply to your school (though it looks like an amazing learning place for aspiring vets), but I hope there are local colleges around my current household. If anyone would be as kind to maybe tell me what grades/GPA is expected in high school before attending Vet School in the united states? Thank you so much, Best wishes x

    Do this vet college offers an externship opportunity to vet students from another country? I saw a data that University of Edinburgh is in the high rank of vet colleges in the world. So I hope experience their education. Actually most of our country's vet colleges focus on theory(not practical clinic).

    I’m in my last year of middle school, I got excepted into a vet tech program for next year. It’s crazy, I know, I’m starting early, I was surprised that they had something like that in high school. I’m excited, I’ve been around livestock since I was born, I’ve been riding horses since I was a baby. I’m hoping to become a large animal vet, if not full equine. I recently bought my very own horse, a 15.2 hand blue roan quarter horse, named cricket. For graduation I’m taking my best friend, (who’s been riding with me since we were 6) and going to a dude ranch in Del Rio, Tennessee. I’ve done roundups before with herds of horses but have never done a cattle drive. We’re going to a ranch with over 3000 acres of land, we decided to do an overnight cattle drive. I hope everybody is having a great day!

    i am 17 years old I have always wanted to work in the medical field. I love animals and i think that is the right way. The only thing that concerns me is the chemistry- is it less than a human med program? The thing that keeps me on the idea to be a vet is biology, I love it.

    • @TheDickVet

      Hello,

      Hi Tom,
      Yes, for a vet degree at Edinburgh, at A-level you need Chemistry, Biology and one other approved subject. English looks to be on our list of approved subjects.
      If Physics has not been studied to A level, a good pass at GCSE is required.
      You can find all the details here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme/academic-requirements
      Hope that helps!

      what are the grades you need

    • @TheDickVet
      @TheDickVet  7 років тому +3

      Hi Amy,
      If you are in Scotland then the requirements are:
      AAAAB Five Highers including Chemistry (A), Biology (A) and either Mathematics or Physics to be achieved by the end of S5. If Biology has not been studied in S5, it should be taken in S6 to Higher level.
      BB at Advanced Higher in Chemistry and another science subject.
      If possible Advanced Higher Biology, as this will be beneficial for the first year of the course. If Physics has not previously been studied to Standard Grade or Higher level, it should be studied in sixth year to either Standard Grade, National 5, Intermediate 2 or Higher level.
      If you are in England then the requirements are:
      Three A levels: AAA in Chemistry, Biology and one other subject approved for entry to the veterinary degree programme.
      if you live elsewhere then it's best to check our webpage here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/bvms-degree/5-year-programme/academic-requirements
      Please note that these do change a little occasionally, so make sure to check back for the most up to date information before you make any decisions on your subjects.

    Hey! So I definitely have my mind set on becoming a vet when I’m older, I’m going to be doing a week long course on veterinary work in April. And I am applying for a technical school that provides Health services. I’ve heard that to go to a veterinary school, you must have a degree in biology. Is this true?

    • @TheDickVet
      @TheDickVet  6 років тому +1

      Hi Pandalicious,
      At Edinburgh we offer two options - you can do a 5 year degree directly from High School, which doesn't require a degree first. We also offer a 4 year undergraduate programme for people who have done a relevant degree. Some parts of the world will require a degree first, but that's not a requirement for us, so you can indeed come directly from School.
      We've got more information on studying with us here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying or feel free to ask if you have any questions.
      Thanks!

    I’m currently in year 11 and I’d love to come here, what are the requirements for work experience?

    • @TheDickVet
      @TheDickVet  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Anya,
      Sorry for the slow reply.
      You should gain as much and as varied as practical work experience as possible, which should include time spent on:
      - Seeing veterinary practice, both large and small animal if possible.
      - Livestock farms - dairying and lambing are particularly useful.
      - Other animal establishments, such as zoos, kennels, catteries, wildlife centres, pig farms, poultry farms and stables.
      - A day at an abattoir is recommended but not demanded.
      We encourage experience gained in veterinary or medical laboratories to help you appreciate the scientific basis of veterinary medicine.
      We do not ask for specific types or the number of days/weeks required for work experience as it depends, to some extent, on the opportunities available to individual candidates.
      The broader the experience, the better but you should not gain experience to the detriment of your academic studies.
      Good luck!

    A while ago I wanted to become a vet, but I got interested in computing science and graphics at school and when it came to S3 subject choices I swapped biology for spanish, since I was good at that. If I was to change my mind and wanted to be a vet again would I be able to pick biology for S5 and S6 or would I have been required to learn it in S3 and S4. Because I’ve had some second thoughts recently but my subject form has already been handed in.

    Hello there sir/maam,
    I am in year 7 and I’m determined to become a vet at all costs, I am in top sets for everything and it’s my biggest wish to join your beautiful school. I have a special connection with all animals and a stomach of steel, and everything shown in this video makes me even more certain that I want to put all my work and effort into learning. So, please, tell me where I go from my GCSE’s to join your school. Thank you so much ☺️

    • @TheDickVet
      @TheDickVet  5 років тому +1

      Hello!
      It's lovely to hear that you're so determined to become a vet - with that kind of passion, I am sure you’ll be successful!
      These are just some broad bits of advice, if you want specifics, then I would suggest checking out our website - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme - as we have all the detailed information that you’ll need.
      Academically, you want to be looking at sciences - in England we require three A levels all at grade A when you get that far and they have to be Chemistry, Biology and one other approved subject. You can find a list on the website, and a lot of academic subjects are accepted as your third choice, but a lot of people pick a choice they enjoy and they will prove useful for the degree.
      Non academics include work experience and while we don’t mandate a set amount, we suggest as a start:
      Seeing veterinary practice with both large and small animal vets.
      Working on livestock farms.
      Working in other animal establishments, such as zoos, kennels, catteries, wildlife centres, pig farms, poultry farms and stables
      A day at an abattoir is recommended but not demanded
      We encourage experience gained in veterinary or medical laboratories to help you appreciate the scientific basis of veterinary medicine
      Some of these will not be possible until you are over 16 and in all cases I would strongly recommend having a notebook where you keep a record of all work experience, dates, key findings and so forth, so that when you come to complete a work experience form, you have all the details you need.
      At this stage, I would suggest putting your energy into your school work and enjoying all the extra-curricular activities that you enjoy doing. If you like sports, play sport, if you enjoy music or acting, do those and just keep a clear idea of what you need to accomplish academically at each point and I am sure you’ll do really well.
      Good luck!

      Hi Safwa,
      Sorry for the delay in our reply. You don't need physics to A-level, as you can take other things instead, but if you need it to at least GCSE level. You can find our general requirements here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme/academic-requirements or there are links through to other countries if you are not based in the UK.
      Hope that helps, if you need more info then please let us know, or you are always welcome to e-mail our undergraduate admissions team on vetug@ed.ac.uk and they'll be happy to help.

      Hi Rainboom,
      Science subjects are definitely worth concentrating on, so biology and chemistry, but also physics and maths too.
      It's a few years until you have to make any decisions that can't be changed, so I would enjoy school for now, see what you like doing and what you are good at and when the time comes to pick your subjects for qualifications, take a look at what you need to get into the career you like the look of and make sure that you are on the right path.
      Good luck!

    • @TheDickVet
      @TheDickVet  5 років тому

      Hi Pangpang,
      Are you looking to get experience with a vet before applying for your undergraduate? We recommend speaking to as many vets as possible and trying to get experience with small animal vets, equine and also production animal vets if possible, as that will give you the best range of experience.
      We also recommend visiting livestock farms, diary and lambing and particularly useful. Experience gained in medical laboratories is also very helpful.
      We have more information here: www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/4-year-programme/non-academic-requirements
      We understand that it can be difficult to get placements, but sometimes you have to keep trying as many different practices as possible and a lot of vets will be willing to give experience to someone who wants to join the profession, as they needed to get that help themselves!
      I hope that helps, if you have more specific questions, then feel free to e-mail our undergraduate admissions team on vetUG@ed.ac.uk, and they are happy to offer lots more advice.
      Thanks!

      @TheDickVet  7 років тому

      Hi angelika,
      I'm glad to hear you want to be a vet - good luck! University fees depend on where you live - for many of our students they don't have to pay anything, but for some, yes, there are fees.
      As you still have a good few years before you can apply to Veterinary School, I wouldn't worry about the fees just now, but concentrate on getting good grades in school and when you are a little older, start thinking about getting some practical experience volunteering to help work with animals.
      Good luck and hopefully we'll see you in the future, as one of our students!
