    I am binge watching your videos. I’ve never watched them before. I think your videos are some of the highest quality and greatest teaching videos on UA-cam. I just watched the ones where you slept in the woods. Now watching this video where you’re teaching your brother-in-law that has little to no experience what to look for and how to read sign is incredibly helpful. I’m trying to teach my grandkids and I’m not so good at describing this so well. I’m going to show them your videos and talk to them about what they learn from that because early success means everything to a young inexperienced hunter. Maybe they’ll find the same success in the woods that I have found, maybe they’ll find as much success as you have found! thank you for your videos

      Thanks for the comment and support. I really appreciate it. Yes, helping the next generation of hunters to find success is super important. Anything you can do in that way is time well spent. I think the key is to make sure they are good with shooting any legal deer at first. My brother in law actually shot a doe last fall and he is now hooked.

    Great video Bill; and good luck Aaron! BTW, Bill it is super helpful for you to go through hunting topography and stand site selection. Many folks talk about it but few actually walk it and show what they are talking about. (Ridge, Saddle, Bench, Etc). We need to welcome the new hunters to the sport and tips like this are great; can't wait to see how Aaron gets that deer out of there. You will be getting a phone call for sure. 😂

    Great video Bill. THIS is what alot of newbies need,, a mentor. Also the content of the video of actually walking in the woods and POINTING OUT the important stuff to look for, rather than to just set a stand in an easy spot and have minimal success because u seen one rub. I do this with my sons everytime we hit the woods. This video shows that its never to late to get the Itch and get hooked. Remind him to not mention prices on equiptment he needs to buy, my wife is still mad! Lol. I think it would be cool video series to keep doing,what u started with him, all thru the process. Scout, pick stand site, set-up stand according to wind and entry routes, hunting, celebration if he tags one, and celebration while cooking fresh straps off the grill. Too many hunters have lost sight of reality. I love Midwest Whitetails,, but it was hard relate in ways, because u had managed land and im on heavy public in Indiana. This will also help for when i mentor a buddy for his first hunt, it will make it easier for me to show him the “ropes”
    Thanks Bill and keep’em coming. 👍🏻

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  3 роки тому

      Yes, this stuff with Aaron gets me back to the heart of hunting. I always loved shooting a big deer. Since I sold my farm I have more and more just wanted to go hunting and not worry about the size. I love public land because it is usually in really cool and pretty spots and there is a greater adventure in it than going to a stand that you put up 10 years ago and haven't moved since then because you know it is already in the best killer spot. I have the lease again this year, but if I didn't, I would have no problem just going deer hunting somewhere for the sheer joy of the adventure. I don't condemn wanting to shoot big deer. They are really cool and I will keep loving those big antlers, but sometimes the adventure (the experience of just being in a new spot) is the real trophy. Selling the farm helped to bring me back to that realization.

      Agreed. I think it would be worth a hunt or two early in the season before the hunter traffic starts and then abandon the bottom and get deeper into the ridges. Wind blowing in the direction of the valley will not swirl as much and you can get away with that sometimes.

      Good luck, John. Just be sure that you set realistic goals. It is very frustrating trying to shoot a caliber of animal that doesn't exist where you are hunting. I would say for new hunters and to hunters new to public land set small reachable goals to just getting any legal size deer to seeing a deer outside of bow range. Hunting public land or bow hunting alone for me in Pa has been a challenge to where I have yet to fill a tag for the past three season. My first season I had deer come by my stand that I couldn't shoot, the next season I drew back on doe at 35 yards with a small shooting widow and lost the shot. My goal for last season was to release an arrow with hopes of either clean hit or miss. Sadly that never happen, but with learning from mistakes and seeking improvements the progress can be achieved.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  3 роки тому +1

      Robert, you are on the right track. The key, once you find a good spot, is to be able to hunt it without the deer knowing you are there, which can be a real trick sometimes. Good luck.

    I hunted Lancing public land last year whish I would have seen this video before hand. I did not kill anything on that trip, I took a 130ish buck there 5 years earlier. Loved hunting that area but probably wont be back as the non resident tag is just getting too expensive. So how did Aron end up doing last year?

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  2 роки тому +1

      That is too bad Steve. The Lansing area gets a good bit of pressure, but there are a few hidden corners that take some really work to get to. I may hunt a part of that this year if I get up the "gumption". Aaron shot a doe last fall, so that was good!

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  3 роки тому +2

      I should. I still have that lease and hate to give it up because I will never get it back once I do and it is pretty good, an area I used to hunt when I was a kid. So, since I am paying for it, I really should hunt it. I can't sublease it because of my deal with the landowner. I tried to buy it, but that went nowhere. I spend all my time scouting and thinking about the public lands in that area, but I have yet to hunt them. Maybe a little bit this year. The state owns all the prettiest ground in that area and that beauty is what draws me to those areas.

      Russ, you have to keep in mind that Aaron is completely green (he has only been out a few times in his life) and he asked me to help him find a few stand sites on the public area he planned to hunt. I was going to do that anyway, so I just decided to film it because I thought others might enjoy the process. Most hard-core deer hunters won't get much out of it, but not everyone is at that level. Some are just like Aaron, trying to shoot any legal deer. I don't want to ignore those guys. They need all our help to learn this sport that has taken us decades to "master" if it ever can be mastered. I just hope Aaron will stick with it long enough to really get hooked. I will produce enough content in the future to hopefully appeal to the hard-cores, but I also want to help those guys who are entry-level.
