As you mentioned, one of the biggest drawbacks to repairing a device with an obscure or uncommon part is the wait time for the new one to arrive. I purchased a replacement fan for a ThinkPad T410 heatsink. They claimed a 3 month shipping time; it didn't take that long but it's a deterrent for sure.
