I believe you know what you are doing, but I am often surprised at how many experienced modelers are content to simply "eyeball" properties that can, and often should be, exact. In this case, you basically guessed at the proper Factor for the Cast Modifier. The proper setting for a sphere is 1.0 . In many cases, nobody can tell the difference, but in more precision work in which parts need to mesh and work together, small inaccuracies can compound into a useless mess - which I'm certain you are aware of, not only in modeling, but in Tracking, Compositing, Rigging, etc.
Well, you saw my clip on imperfections. If you want to avoid the CG look, you have to break stuff intentionally. See the Flexseal clip. We're not doing engineering. The only time you need perfect accuracy is when you do a CG takeover, where you replace a real model with a CG one.
@@BlenderBob Thanks. I agree - I've delt with the perfectionist CG sups myself, and they have their place where appropriate. I'm not here to argue, but to clarify. In a case of rigging, a misshaped sphere or inexact pivot point could cause wobbly motion or interpenetration problems between objects. I'm just saying mathematical precision has it's place, and should be applied where appropriate.
The subdivision operator from the w popup has a smoothness setting you can set to 1.0 to get a near perfect sphere out of a cube (as long as you use enough cuts) and you can follow it up with a "to sphere" operator if you want to be sure it is properly spherical (I don't think this one has a shortcut anymore, I just use the search popup to run it).

Hey BlenderBob I have a question that I wanted to ask but I don't know anyone with the same experience as you to answer it. I'm trying to create completely photoreal humans/ rigs that can be animated with as much quality and complexity I can throw at it. I've been looking around and the majority of the companies I looked at use Maya/ Houdini to create their humans (specifically weta digital with the Gemini man) which honestly. Blew me away in ways I didn't know where possible. So my question is. Can blender be used as a substitute for Maya in a movie like Gemini man. I am planning on learning Houdini so I can implement it into my workflow. Any help or any places where I can learn Houdini or creating complex humans/ human faces is greatly appreciated. Side note: We never got the cat cameos...
Well, you have to understand that making a photorealistic human is the holy grail of CG. This is not a one man job. They probably had 10 people developing it. I can tell that at Method I took the model and the textures for one of the aliens and I assembled them in Blender. I got a result that was very close to the render man version. What is used to model the character is irrelevant. What you use to animate it is irrelevant. The only thing that's really important are textures, look dev, lighting and of course the renderer. Cycles can do it. I know because i tried it. But there's a reason why Gemini Man blew you away: WETA. They have years of experience doing this. It's really really hard.
Pardon me for chiming in here - but IMO you could get really close to very realistic in Blender - but like Bob said, it's rare for one person to be able to pull it off - because the more realistic you get, the more work it takes - and it's a LOT of work. Lighting, shading, camera work, animation ... all contribute to the *perception* of realism - and they all play off each other. I would say that animation is more critical than some of the other aspects - because if it doesn't move "right", it's going to look fake - which is where you get into micro-expressions and slide comfortably into the Uncanny Valley. Check out Chris Jones' work (Wrinkles and Skin Slide) and Face Rig testing. He's done - and is doing - some amazing stuff.
@@BlenderBob Thank you this is really informative. I am planning to switch to renderman as theres a version for it coming out for blender "renderman 24" for rendering. but the main issue im running into is creating the expressions and shapekeys. I cant seem to find the proper way to know what sort of shapekeys im suppose to sculpt. From what I know there are a base of 51 shapkeys for the face but for characters like thanos and gemini man they expanded the shapekey element down to the neck.
@@george.exe_stopped_working Good luck with Renderman. It's the most complicated renderer. Super powerful though. I'm not using shape keys for my job so I can't help you on that. Sorry!
@@BlenderBob quick question will you be trying renderman for blender aswell or will you stay for cycles as of now? Because cycles X does look promising aswell.
Space 1999 and the Eagle have been for me, when I was a kid, what Star Trek and the Enterprise are for trekkies. Sorry! PS: This video goes straight into my saved list of all the "Must watch over and over and all over again"...
The way I model in real life and the way I do it in my clips are quite different. I completely remapped my keyboard so I can't show my hotkeys. I go in the menues to show people what I'm doing. Just saying press whatever key to do something doesn't teach which tool it is. Thanks for the comments :-)
Love the video - however, you go through things very quickly and as you have customised settings/shortcuts, some things do not appear to work or are as easy to do as you do them. eg. When you split the sphere to create a cylinder, both your halves appear to be 1 object, however, when I do it, it creates 2 separate objects so I cannot BRIDGE the edges? Do you have another video where you configure Blender, install addons, customise settings etc..?
Icospheres are triangles. You want to keep your model as quads as much as possible. You can check my clips 1a to 1e. I talk about this somewhere. Actually, I think I talk about it in a few other clips too. Forgot which one. I’m old...

"i was just thinking about the subtitles people who use the subtitles how it's going to translate these _mushrooms"_
thank you, you teaches a lot of things.....
This was fun. I was between ten and eleven when Space 1999 was on TV, 1976 in Sweden. I was amazed then, but it don't look that great with modern standards :) I was convincing my selves then that the cockpit was design to detach from the rest of the craft when crashing. OK the cookies, I try not to eat cookies, not even from Kevin Cookie Company and I think Kevin Statvert has some kind of cookie UA-cam franchise. So sorry. Now to the serious stuff, has anyone here told you that you don't know 3d modeling ? Shame on them in that case! Keep up the good work! Maybe a future tutorial can be a animation of a crashing Eagle on the dusty Moon surface?
To set up a permanent link for discord:
1. In your server, above your list of channels you will see your name, click that and select "invite people".
2. A box will appear with a link to copy, beneath the link box you will see "Your invite link expires in 7 days. Edit invite link" .
3. In the next window select the "Expires After" drop down, and choose "never"
4. Click the "Generate New Link" button and copy the new link.
5. Throw new link at everyone you talk to until your server is overrun with random strangers.
It should be a permanent link. I’ll check
when you made the sphere, you forgot to apply the rotation and scale before using your displacement mod ;) ....other than that, I enjoyed the video....thanks for sharing :)
Faster way to create a sphere from a cube: SHIFT A -> MESH -> ROUND CUBE ... Change Operator Preset to "Quadsphere"
Yep! Already in Part 2! :-)
@@BlenderBob Sorry, didn't get that far yet.
I like when people give me tricks and tips. I included a few in part 2. Like dissolving an edge while keeping the vertices.
5:39 holy shit my tip was useful. I am honored. Lmaoooo
thanks a lot for outstanding work!
Thank you! Amazing tutorial
The "Buster Keaton" of Blender teachers :-) (To be honest: Not really aplicable for newbies, but with a bit of experience your videos are worth every second - and very entertaining! Are you sure to work in FX-industry and not being a comedian? :-) )
I’m a huge Buster Keaton fan!
Merci pour tes tuto Blender Bob, je me coucherai moin bête ce soir ...
My God, this was deep. Way too deep for me
You can do it. One step at a time
Hey BlenderBob I have a question that I wanted to ask but I don't know anyone with the same experience as you to answer it.
Because cycles X does look promising aswell.
thanks!! :D
Amazing teacher! 💯💥👍
Thank you so much !
08:38 For this option you can just access it by right clicking then set origin => origin to 3D cursor.
Select Edge Rings:
Ctrl + Alt + Right click (With standard Blender Keymap)
Toggle to local view:
/ (On Numpad. Standard Blender Keymap)
Love you Tutorial Bob!
Xie xie!
Space 1999 and the Eagle have been for me, when I was a kid, what Star Trek and the Enterprise are for trekkies. Sorry!
PS: This video goes straight into my saved list of all the "Must watch over and over and all over again"...
I don’t know anybody that didn’t like the eagles.
Amazing!
i like you video, they are funny, but I think you miss many shortcuts that make more easier the modeling.
Yeah, I made a mistake in my clip. It's not separate, it's split. But actually you can just select the polygons and extrude. By bad
@@BlenderBob Much better thanks.
great tutorial! Is there a way to make Viewport Subdivisions with a hit on the button like in Maya or Modo? Its the 3 button in Maya or Tab in Modo.
Ctrl 1? Works for me but then again I remapped so many keys
@@BlenderBob thanks! I tried mapping the key yesterday and it worked :-)
Thanks for blueprints, i want to model and post it #bobvfx
Subscribed, eagle 1999, gotta love it.
At 4:45, what is the result if you use an icosphere? Isn't that easier than using a cube? Genuinely curious. Thanks
Icospheres are triangles. You want to keep your model as quads as much as possible. You can check my clips 1a to 1e. I talk about this somewhere. Actually, I think I talk about it in a few other clips too. Forgot which one. I’m old...
@@BlenderBob No probs, I'm new to the channel, planning to watch all eventually, I'm sure I'll come across them. And thanks for the explanation Bob, that makes sense.
The subtitles came out - “mushroom”
Endgone is hand gun 😂😂😂😂
This is a FANTASTIC collection of tips for hard surface noobs. BUT. It's strange that it's as tutorial about copying a model that you already have. Working on reference pics would have been more interesting. Also, how is a pie menu better than just pressing E to extrude? You're a strange guy
My pie menu has all three extrude options. :-)
@@BlenderBob taking notes here
"smidge much h mood shade smooth " =D
Ha ha! I forgot to try. Tx
@@BlenderBob Thank YOU, for the fantastic videos!
@@CarpeUniversum You're welcome!
Hm did i just actually not send my comments or did they get hidden/deleted because i cant see them when im logged in or in a private browser window (fully logged out)?
YT automatically deletes comments with links unless they are YT links. You can try to trick the system by changing maybe http for hhhp (I will understand what it's a link) or go to Facebook or on my NEW SHINNY DISCORD SERVER! :-)
Actually I did your cookies, but they were so nice the computer are them.
