- Is your reel to reel running slow? Changing speed? Not moving the reels at all? Most likely you need a new run capacitor. I replaced the run capacitor on this Sony reel to reel with a newer style one that only cost about eight dollars. Since I couldn't find a video showing how this was to be done, it which one to buy I thought I'd make a video. Please let me know if you have questions.

Thank you for this. I too have a 71 machine, a phillips n4450. The first problem was screeching reel motors which some sewing machine oil seems to have sorted but now i have this problem of the motor on one side slowing down for no reason. Someone advised me to change all the capacitors which i can do but will be a big job for someone as inexperienced as me. Luckily i can solder so it's just coing to be a case of finding and matching the right components.
This is a nice clear video - too few videos online showing repairs!
Not sure if you've still got this machine, but does your erase head and the tape make contact during FF or RW? Or does the tape bar move the tape sufficiently away from all the heads during fast winding? I have a TC-645 that I'm working on, and I have noticed erase head wear due to this very issue. I have lapped the erase head, so it's fine now, but it will only re-occur again of course. The thickness of the bar is the issue I believe, it needs only to be a few mm broader in diameter.
Hello Bowman-gt.....My capacitor seems to work fine as the motor fan turns but I need to clean and oil the main pulleys. The problem is the "lock pin's head" is not coming out, i keep sliding it but it wont come out of the slot even I move it both ways slider. Does the pin had needs to be pulled up or to unwind....Please help, looks like it will break. THANK YOU.
Working on old tc630. Thanks
I see you used a 1.5uf capacitor (which also has a 3.5uf wire on it that you just taped up as it's not needed). The existing capacitor also has a 0.5uf lug on it and that's wired originally along with the 1.5uf. Did you install a separate 0.5uf capacitor as well? Or is that 0.5uf wire just taped up and no longer used?
Which condenser is that ? One which you shown for replacement?
So I have to ask, others have but there is no answer. Which wire on the new cap goes to which wire on the TC-377? Or does polarity not matter?
Hi is that capacitor working good for that machine .Because if you got the success I'll try it on mine.please reply
Is the blue wire connected to yellow one?
With reference to the Sony TC 377 Manual one could use a 2 micro farad capacitor if the A.C. supply in your country is 50 Hz. However, is the A.C. supply in your country is 60 Hz then use a 1.5 micro farad capacitor respective of the supply voltage in regards to which capacitor you select.
Australia is 50hz so should I be using a different cap? Also I'm not sure which wire on the new cap goes to which wire on the TC377.
Hello friend my sony tc 377 need a motor not found on ebay can you tell me where I can find: A hug from Portugal
Hi mate. Good video but can you please tell me how you wire the new cap. I have the same model with the same issues but the existing wiring is complex. Do you patch the new cap into the existing wiring or do you completely remove the old cap.
Yes what he said !!!
got EXACTLY the same problem with my old sony tc252 reel to reel. lots of goo in the housing. motor ran really hot. did it run hot on your end to before the repair ?
Yes, it got very very warm
And where and what am I looking for if indeed it is the capacitor ?
Hi, Nice Video. I have a Sony that I am looking to do the same repair. Do you have to use an insulated screwdriver to discharge the cap? Do you do that first and then unsolder the wires? Thanks
It's a good idea, yes. But if the capacitor is bad, it's probably not holding a charge. I just use the driver to cross the terminals just in case.
It should discharge in about 5 or 10 min but just to be safe have the machine isolated and disconected then short the leads
Hi there, when I turn my tc377 on I used to hear the motor but lately nothing, dead silence, would you say the capacitor is gone like you suggested in this gem of a video you put up? Short and to the point! It was also playing a little bit slowly too but now zippo! I opened it up to see and there was a lot of like ‘candle grease’ around the capacitor. Ty
Mine did that because I didn't have tape in it. It won't engage the motor without tape on the reel correctly the far left bottom has a switch that will turn the motor off when no tape is in.
Hi I have the same issues on my tc377. What was the replacement capacitor?
It wasn't from Sony, it was a "Within Spec" replacement. Bummer thing is though that it works better, but now it seems the motor itself is struggling, but at least now it starts moving
Would you be able to tell
us how to find a capacitor for a sony reel to reel TC252D
Can you hel We enjoy your site very much. Bernie and Terry Shirker.
Thank you! Just find the two sets of numbers on the original capacitor and search for a new one that is close to those figures. Most will not look like the original. If you want the original look and size you'll spend about the times more but they are out there!
I have a sony tc366 with bad capacitor. there is five wires connected to three connectors on old capacitor ... there are only two connectors on new capacitor i got....is there certain way wires must be connected?
I could tell you what I thought, but I'm not sure I'm right so I won't. I bought one that had the same voltage and connectors so there were no extras or missing connectors.
Is the fuse lamp for the VU meters 8 Volt 0.3 Amp or 5 Volt 60mAmp?
Next time I have it open again, I'll take a look.
Where can I get one the Magnetic Capsule Protective Case ? for Sony TC-377
If you can find any numbers on the old one, you should be able to locate a replacement... they keep pretty good records of supersessions etc
What happened with this? Did you by any chance get a video of it working after?
It works, but it's still a little slow sometimes. I think the motor might be weakening and will replace that next.
How did you wire that cap?
What do you mean? Like did I solder them? Then yes. I hooked it up the same as the one i removed.
у меня soni ts399 апарат звучит отлично один минус перемотка и лпм.
