  • I've been wanting to make my own 3kHz calibration tapes for some time now, and after finding out that my reference tape isn't so good anymore I decided now is as good a time as any.
I currently have four direct drive cassette decks in operating condition, two of them quartz lock, and I want to definitively be able to point at one specific unit and say, "That's the best one for the job." All four will make one tape each, and all four will check each others' results to obtain the data needed to determine this.

I suggest that you record a log for each test in the program (perhaps 30 seconds for each) and insert the obtained results into Excel and create a chart. :)

The most interesting measurements you left out..... (the self mesurements). Would be interesting to compare with the other measurements. I did a little more digging and in theory should be possible to self measure deviations. The factor is not 2 times thought. The value would be SQR(2) of measured value (measured / 1.414). I have no idea if in pratical terms it is valid, but in theory it seems to be possible.
Just keeping the controversy alive.... ;-)

whats your take on dual capstan vs single capstan concerning wow & flutter? I'd love to see the Eumig FL-1000µP tested since it has no flywheel at all ...

I don't think it makes much difference if any at all. Unless you can't find a good intercapstan belt which ends up only making things worse. A lot of people prefer single capstan for that reason, and I'm starting to become one of them. That said, the Dragon is fully direct drive - no belts at all. Both capstans and both reels are direct drive in that guy. It's part of the reason they're so hard to work on. I have a Sony TC-K666ES in the to-do pile now... triple direct drive. It does have an intercapstan belt to drive the supply side, but other than that there are no other rubber parts except for the pinch roller. I'm expecting a lot from that one when I can get to it.

@@Oklawolf all direct drive sounds good ... I only knew the Revox machines for all direct drive and a solenoid for moving the head assembly

What's funny is the Sony was sold to me as being non playable. Fired up and worked straight out of the shipping box. Maybe if I leave it be for a couple months it'll give me something to fix on video, though it will need the usual lubrication work they all need at this age.

It breaks my heart to see you working so hard on this decks and still not achieve the best results (wow&flutter) at least on one deck. It`s a very tough job in these days because the quality of the parts available it`s a lottery. Many good technicians overlook the importance of the reel motor which can cause bad modulation and destroys the wow&flutter results. If the magnet it`s bad, no matter if you open it to clean&oil, will be just the same. I have a cassette deck modified to accommodate all types of reel motors for testing prior to install it in my decks, so i don`t work 10 times to change motor after motor! I just put two videos on my channel to show you the difference between a good one and one not so good. Keep up the good work! ua-cam.com/video/cwfq3_ciODM/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/GuWXWZgXOUc/v-deo.html

Ultimately these are 40 year old machines and, in the case of the A&D, likely well used also. That's why I'm not too interested in going much further with it... 0.0475% brings it mostly in line with the other single capstan direct drive units. I can't hear anything worse than 0.07% anyway so I figure why stress myself out about it? With that said, I have been thinking about buying some new reel motors to play with.
