Thank you, using walmart fabric for knit muslins was a fantastiv idea. My non wearable muslins are not just tossed but shredded and used to stuff dog beds to donate to the local shelter.
I have 4 Walmart's relatively close that I frequently stop by to check out the value cuts! The favorites I found there recently is floral double brushed poly and actual denim! Like decent denim!
You are correct. You can get the good, bad, and ugly from Walmart. However, I have bought plenty of fabric there. It is good for testing patterns. If the fabric turns out to be very thin, I just use it for lining. In fact, I like to line my knit skirts, and thin knit from Walmart is my lining of choice.
Love your open mind & fabric haul. I'm new to garment sewing & buy most of my knit fabric online, so this is a great idea to check out before sewing with the more expensive fabric. Thanks for all your videos Kim, always informative & appreciated.
Yes yes I've gotten quite a few yards of knits from Walmart. I really like the bundles and I always pull out a few inches to check to see if it thick enough. Happy sewing.
My Wal-Mart has been stepping their game up by having really good knits. I wish I could start my UA-cam channel over again to show but i just don't have the time. Great haul!
Thank you, I have purchased some really good fabric from Walmart and they have lasted very well. I have some not so good as well, but used it for lining in a dress and some I still have waiting for that moment .😊
I have done some uorthodox thing about "thrift" fabric shopping at walmart. Sometimes a a garment costs less that a fabric you would buy to make it. So... I buy some goregous rayon knit nightshirts in the largerst size I can find, cut them up, and make something tryly unique using the patterns I love. I am not using facebook so I cannot show you photos, but I made some truly spectacular outfits this way! I also love remnants section. One day I got some dull looking chambray I thouht to use for muslin and at home I doscivered that it ascually coton-poly woven with the most beautiful print inside! Black stylized flowers on gray-blue background. Super soft after washig. Love it! One of the remnants I got I think may be actually silk. I have not burn-test it yet. But it feels like silk. Some great finds there!
I just wanted to tell everyone that when I purchase any fabric, I always wash it, my Mama always told me to wash any fabric I buy, and at 72 yrs I can’t stop now.... Mona-keep sewing!!!!
Have gotten some pretty decent fabrics at Walmart although lately stock has been sparce except for quilting cottons. Haven't bought any for awhile as it has been a hassle getting someone to cut. Only other options here are Joanne's and hobby lobby. Sure miss the fabric stores that use to be around! Hancock's and Mays!! ~~ those were the days when I actually had a decent stash!!
I have found some great deals on fabric lately, my local Walmart had there 3 for $6 on sale for $1.50. They were pretty decent fabrics. Definitely pleased.
I’m new to knits. Thank you for the suggestion of visiting stores like Walmart for practice “muslins” and pattern testing fabrics. Another informative video Kim🙂
The floral is very pretty! I've never seen any like that at my store. I'm now wishing I had bought the velour. It would make a cozy sweater for my daughter if sewn inside out like you suggested.
Great video! I concur with what you said. I go weekly to Walmart to check out these rolls of fabric. I alternate between 2 Walmarts close to where I live. I always make sure to touch the fabric by pulling a layer out of the fabric roll. My main complaint is that the knits are very thin and wrinkly a lot of the times. Anyway, I have found great finds like denim with brown leopard print, mid-weight knits, non-transparent crepe, satin, rib knit, lace and suiting fabric. I remember only getting rid (donating or throwing away) of a handful of fabrics I got from there. Either they were too wrinkly or would pill. If you have an eye for quality, you can find gems there.
I never thought of Walmart! Need fabric for “muslins”. It’s been 50 yrs since I did garment sewing and I’ve got a lot to learn with knits. (You, Joy Bernhardt, and my Palmer Pletsch books are my top teachers.) Thanks for suggestion. I stopped at Zinck’s while up in Amish country yesterday. Overwhelming! And it’s a two hr trip from my home just SE of Columbus, but I did pick up a couple of things. Thanks for that too. Have a blessed day.
I just got some fabric from Walmart. I got some turquoise fleece but, it is really thin but I want to make the love notion vest. I might go look a Joann’s to see if they have the same color and is thicker. I think the fabric will be o.k. Thank you for the great video. Happy Sewing 🧵
I haven’t been to Walmart since the Covid. Last time I was there pickins were slim. My Walmart seems to just have a lot of cotton quilting fabrics. Not many knits. Yes they don’t say what the fabric content is.
I love the idea of using Wal-Mart fabrics for muslins! I just recently realized that they sold fabrics again and was shocked at the price. It actually made me question the quality so I passed. But I did see some beautiful knit (something I know would have been over $10 a yard else ware) that I almost bought. I just wasn't sure what the deal was with the precuts, if damage or something had happened to the yardage. I will definitely buy if I see something I just can't pass up now.
well I ran to Wally and got the very soft ivory with thin black stripes and a very soft blue background with images of cocktails in fancy glasses on it. I saw your ivory with the beige stripes and a very soft white with ballerina's on it but passed on them. Thank you! Last time I looked at those precuts they were mostly chiffon and very bright prints that do not appeal to me at all. The shelve had many more bolts on them than they have had in a long time also. I also saw your very thin blue and black knits but passed on them also. My zooms only show me from the mid chest up so I am not worried about pants at this time. Great video - thank you!!
Great video I love Walmart fabric I've made stunning dresses and shirts from Walmart fabric most my dresses cost $3-7 to make thanks to Walmart per cut and clearance section fabrics
The biggest problem is most fabrics do not have their content. But if the price is right I will go for it. One thing they have that is an excellent value is Waverly home decor fabrics. They are a great price, and there are many colors and patterns. I got a rayon knit once that had 25% shrinkage! But not a loss because I was pattern testing and I washed it three times first.
First time here. I’ve had good luck with fabrics from Walmart, (with one exception). But I have to tell you, the quote you have on the wall is from one of my favorites from Scripture.
I have found some nice cuts from Walmart. I picked up a couple today in fact. Some are very nice knits. I buy by feel mostly but I have been sewing for 50+ years and can usually tell. I too sometimes gets duds. Like you suggested though, they can be used for trial garments and new patterns I am not sure of fit. Great video!
Hi. I was looking at your scissors in the background. I recently cut some fat quarters from Walmart to make masks (and the selection was really nice) I followed a pattern but when I trace cut the fabric I noticed that sometimes my scissors cut too inside or outside of the fabric. I have the scissors with plastic ends and wondered if I should invest in the metal ones, the ones professional sewers have? Could you share how you select and use your differs scissors, please? Thank you for doing your vlogs, I enjoy them.
I have been very pleased with most of the fabric I've purchased at Walmart, and I love the prices of most of the precuts and sale items (I confess I am pretty careful to check out the weights and the recovery of knits before buying.) Thanks for your tips.
I wish in the U.K. we had a similar shop to Walmart, we pay so much more for fabrics here. We do occasionally get “fat quarter” bundles in Aldi but nothing like the prices you pay. Love your flowered fabric and your grey striped material is lovely & reminds me of the film Paddington Bear II!
What a coincidence. I ran out to Walmart at lunch to pick up toddler t-shirts to machine embroider on for a quick gift. (My husband told me of the birthday last night at 10pm!!! And it is tonight!) I stopped by the fabric stash for a quick look. There was a pretty knit but I could not find the end to test the weight, so I passed. I have an excessive stash anyway. Then I came home and you shared your haul. Good idea to prewash separately. I have been using a color catcher sheet, but separate is even safer.
Here in Canada Walmart do not sell fabric any more. But when they did I got some really great fabric. Once I got some houndstooth, made jacket and pants, it sewed up great and wore really good. Miss the fact that they don’t sell fabric now.
I have some very thin fabric (polyester) in pale sage & baby blue. Do you think making chemise type house dresses would work with this almost see through fabric?
I agree regarding fabric for test garments. My Walmart also carries bolts of fabric but they have cut down on how much. Since I discovered the bundles they have fit my needs completely. There are usually several bundles that have been broken open. If you need to break one open I think it would be fine as long as you place it on the cutting counter with the wrapper so it can be retaped.
I am surprized that I have not been removed from the Walmart Fabric section. :-D Luckily there is no staff there to watch me pull at tthe fabric rolls. Enjoyed the video.
When I washed the last Walmart fabric, the darks never stopped bleeding dye. I washed it 4 times. I sure can’t use it for anything for my grandkids. They would end up with all grey clothes!
That definitely falls in the bad and ugly category. Although, I have purchased fabric at Joann’s that has done the same thing. It just underscores the need to prewash- it might not save the fabric, but it will save you from wasting your time.
is there a particular place in walmart that you all find these deals? My walmarts only have bolts at regular price? Maybe i am not looking in the right place??
In my Walmart the knits are rolled up and hard to see. They don't tell content so I am afraid to buy them. i would like to find the sweatshirting with velour back. I got some sweatshirting a year ago and it was so stiff that I took the garment to resale.
Omgosh! I'm sewing on Walmart fabric while watching this! I'm a new sewer and every single first try, muslin, mock up, or something I self drafted, it all gets sewn on Walmart fabric. I have finished using up the fabrics and made t-shirts and lounge wear. The knits have been great practice for knickers and bralette. I have scored some very very nice sweatshirt materials and have made some nice sweats after practicing on a Terry type knit also bought there. I have sewn up some very nice garments on expensive fabrics that I didn't have to waste thanks to my Walmart bundles. I was actually lucky enough to be there every day about a month ago when they were downsizing the entire section and clearance sealed out all their fashion fabric. So I did actually get some really nice stuff too. I thrift for linen and wool and find some amazing things. But knits I love sewing with and I don't expect any knits to last forever so it's a good compromise for me.
If you get something really thin can you double it up and use two layers together? I bought a really pretty sweater knit but it's too thin to actually be a sweater.
You can, it will present a challenge of keeping the layers smooth and even. I would go for a more relaxed vs very fitted. I also tend to just wear a tank top or T-shirt under the sweater tops that are not thick enough.
Great topic and tips Kim! I have only recently learned about Walmart carrying pre-cut packaged Fabrics at such great pricing. I've since purchased a few packages. My favorite find is one I couldn't tell the right side of. One looked like the fuzzy inside of a sweatshirt. I made a cardigan using the fuzzy side as the right side and the other side as accent on the sleeve cuffs, top of pockets and front band real happy with how it turned out. I also pull the fabric out to see how thin the knit is!
I buy the mayority of my fabrics from there. My main complaint is that the exact percentages of fabric content will not be listed. Many of these fabric cuts will have listed on them that they are polyester.
I'm going to guess 99% of the stretch is a poly mix. You kind of have to pull out a tail and feel it, look at how sheer it might be, and what kind of stretch it has. I have found a couple of nice, what I think are DBP, and the knits are not bad if you can get the thicker ones.
I never waste my money on Walmart fabric for quilting. Low grade fabric. If I am going to spend time making a quilt I buy the best quality. I want a quilt to last longer than a couple washes.
@@terriluginbyhl161 Where I live, there are no local fabric stores within 260 miles. Ordering online is not local buying anyway and becomes much more expensive when paying for shipping. I can't pay 3 times or more for fabric used for a muslin, so I'm just happy WM still carries some fabrics. Sometimes practicality wins.
I had to learn to stick my fingers in the roll for the stretch weight / feel.😄😍

Great haul, Kim! I think I’d try using the “not so special” fabric for some knock-around -the-house yoga style pants? Thanks for the video!
I’m new to sewing and purchase fabric from Walmart to practice on and I have made wearable pieces from that fabric.

Out of the knits or fabric that have stretch to them, are they good enough for sewed socks?
Yes, for some. Some of the others might now be the right weight.
Good info, thanks

I bought fabric from WALMART
