- Italy is Heavily Cracking Down on its Tourists, Here's Why | Firstpost America
The global favourite tourist destination of Italy is done with tourists. The country, which has been welcoming tourists for centuries, is now fed up with the number of people that visit the nation every year. While tourism brings money, it is not worth more than a person’s life. Due to so many people in the vicinity, the environment is under extreme pressure. Thus, Italy has been constantly introducing bans on certain activities that tourists can do in the country. There are bans on taking selfies, wearing flip-flops, and even sitting on the iconic steps in Rome. Watch our video to know more.

I am italian, i live in Rome, it is absolutely not true that tourist can't take selfies or wear beach slippers! no one can sit on the stairs of Piazza di Spagna because they are very ancient and are wearing out...tourists are always welcome, hospitality has always been a characteristic of the italian people, and then we are so used to it that Rome would seem empty without you! sorry for my Google translator english
Thank you for your message. Looking forward to visiting Rome soon and I hope to be touring all of Italy before the end of the year. Beautiful country and I'm sure the people are very warm and welcoming.
I'm from Rome too. Totally right!
You have misunderstood the information given. The flip flop ban is for people going on hikes, common sense really!! And selfies is for Portofino because they stop the flow of people in certain panoramic spots.
@@moonshine9836 Good job 👍
But you must admit that at times there are too many people in one place and that the touristic apartments are generating income for the government more than what the tourists spend some times.
Regulation is the solution to keeping the peace between local people and massive tourism… Venice has stopped cruise ships from stopping and the “tourist tax” is a very good incentive.
We must preserve patrimony for future generations, not only tourists.
I think it is not true what the media say about Selfies.
It is probably to scare the tourists to be more aware of the many people in one place at the same time…
Long live the eternal city!
I'm a traveler. I've visited Italy twice, and I fully support Italy defining their boundaries.
Defending their boundaries from all those hundreds of millions of tourist dollars while yelling: Death to the golden goose!”
@@larrysorenson4789 Many countries have decided tourism at all cost is not a good model for their citizens. I respect that.
I do too. I am appalled anybody should oppose it.
@@larrysorenson4789We use Euros in Europe not dollars and by far the largest amount of tourism in Italy comes from other European countries. Only 5-10% of Italy's GDP is generated by tourism and less than 10% of that comes from US citizens, so that equates to less than 1%. Keep your dollars, Europe isn't Disney world, we are just trying to protect our history and culture.
@@WyldStallion-bs9oo I have found that to be true all over Europe. I seem to not have so many issues once people hear my American accent. But, there is definitely racism that I've seen which is worse for Africans.
I consider myself a traveler vs a tourist. I truly appreciate the culture, history, and heritage of every place I visit, but I don't blame Italy, Greece, Spain etc. Tourists are destroying these places, and I'd rather see them preserved even if it also means restrictions for me. People from other countries don't respect the rules and customs of the places they visit, refuse to learn any of the languages, and they'll go to places with some of the best cuisines and order chicken strips... carving names into the ancient architecture... it's terrible.
@@WyldStallion-bs9oo no, è vero.
Definition of tourist: "a person who is traveling or visiting a place for pleasure." Tourist = you. Trying to differentiate yourself from other tourists when you are one. Get off your high horse. You are just like the rest of us. Everyone dislikes destructive people. That is not a unique trait. Lol snob.
Don’t blame them, Italy is very popular and can’t imagine the impact of high volume of tourists on their landscape
Gooood for Italy!! Is about time a country does not sacrifice their well being for money…all countries should learn from them!!

They’re not “breaking up” with tourists, they’re just trying to maintain order and ensuring the fair access of locals to their own communities. If only Mexico could pay attention to this and do something with gentrification and the privatization of our own patrimony…
They do they drain the U.S.
We are missing etiquette and class, elegance. I remember those days from parents wnd grandparents.
Yes, so true. Very sad.
Yes. Contemporary casual clothing lacks class and elegance, per se. And most tourists act like they came from the boondocks (mountains)! Whenever I visited Old World cities, I always brought with me a White Tie ensemble, silk socks and Opera Pumps shoes, just because...

About bloody time. i spent a month in Italy about 5 years ago, mostly in & around Prato & popped into Florence a couple times of & there were way too many tourists & I thought this must piss off the locals no end. Also noticed locals wear sandals, not flips flops. Only saw East Asians, Indians, Africans & Australians wearing flip flops there.
Bella figura, Bella figura 😂. The Italian philosophy that everything should be attractive. Absolutely! Only the Italians would ban flip flops and I support them 💯!
The point of the flip flops is tourists wear them to go on hikes, so when they get stuck, they call the rescue services, you can imagine the waste of time and money for everyone!!! For once is not about fashion!
During 70s and 80s I worked in Rome for one month each year. Way back then it was a nightmare. I'd catch a bus, a tram, two trains and walk 20 min to a beach just to get away from the tourists.
Right? Now multiply that 10 times. Things have worsened the last three years. There's not even a "high season" anymore: it's the same all year round. I'm from Rome, and I loved walking around the city centre and sometimes going to St. Peter or the Pantheon, but now it's just impossible: there are huge queues at any hour and in any month. You can't take a stroll along Via del Corso as it is custom for Romans Saturday afternoon, you can't enjoy the beautiful sights or the art because of the crowds. I feel defrauded of my own city.
You were also a tourist. Nobody made you work there.
@@tjaspire Fool
the flip flops is because of the hiking.... it's not safe! many tourists take some types of excursions lightly. The result is that the authorities increasingly have to provide assistance. In Italy the health and emergency system is free for every person, even for foreigners and tourists. Taking off a helicopter with a rescue team has a cost, this cost is paid by the community. When you tackle a mountain trail, you better be equipped. Otherwise you could get hurt or even die and the Italian authorities pay the economic cost.
Whatever Italy is charging them they should add a 50% idiot tax on top of it. Who TF goes on a mountain hiking trip with flip flops?
100% agree on the flip flops and rescue crews. Rescue for an accident is one thing but stupidity that everyone knows is stupid need to be stopped.

If you travel anywhere in summer of course it will be crowded. We went to Rome last November the weather was beautiful no crowds
Good for Italy especially Venice, I have been there 3 times off season and it is always crowded and those giant cruise ships bring in too many people who do not spend much money there. They crowd up St Marks Square and this ban was a long time coming

I live downtown in a European capital. The whole neighbourhood has turned into airbnb apartments. Local renters are gone, businesses have gone out of business and now there are more tourists at the supermarket queue than locals. Tourists in flip flops or those hideous cork shoes (yeah, I know, they are comfortable but still HIDEOUS) who only shop for grilled cheese. This type of tourism does not support the local economy, only the person renting the airbnb apartment. If I never heard another suitcase roll in front of my building I would be happy. Tourism used to be a luxury. Tickets were expensive, lodging was expensive and I think we should go back to that time.
People ruin beautiful things. Tourists, please go away.
Same thing up here in northern Wisconsin. Too many tourists who think they can do anything they want. The most mean and rude people that come up here are from Illinois and Minnesota. Please go spend your money someplace else.
Crocs, flip flops in Italy is just ugly. And Venice is unbearable with day trippers dragging luggage through the streets. While these measures should help people who do sensible things, it

So they’re ok with tourists visiting and spending money there but not enjoying themselves while they’re there. That’s like letting people into your bar but they’re not allowed to drink. If tourism is becoming a problem then limit the number of tourists you let into the country. Any situation where there’s too many people, festival, event, etc. results in chaos.
