@@LynxStarAutothat's only if the engine starts in the correct direction, the issue is if the timing is a bit off it can fire on the upstroke before the piston reaches top dead center which forces the piston back down against the crank force it's called kickback, different from a backfire, it can really do some damage if you're holding it the wrong way, and I've seen it in person as well, a guy at a car show was trying to kick start the crank with his foot, it kicked back and made him knee himself in the chest he was on the ground with the wind knocked out of him for a good 10 min 😂

The battery on these old timers actually served an important role as the generator did not charge at idle. These 6v generators only produced a charge at higher RPM. So if you were stuck idling, the battery need to be in good state of health to keep the ignition system firing. Sometimes the operator has to idle the engine high to compensate for a weak battery.
My grandpa said during the depression his dad would start up the family car this way but it rarely drove because dad was afraid of breaking his arm on the hand crank.

Yes, the safest way to hand crank any hand-crakable automobile or tractor is as follows: 1. Always use your left hand. 2. If the crank is completely removable then insert it into the cranking hole all the way so it will engage the freewheel. 3. Hold the hand crank with your thumb ALWAYS behind the crank next to the palm of your hand so it forms a U-shape NOT a C-shape. 4. Place you body so your arm, face, etc. or not in the path of the crank as much as possible and that your face in also not in the path either nor are you at risk for falling forward should you loose your balance. 5. Place the hand crank at the 6 o'clock (bottom) position and only crank it to the 12 o'clock (top) position. Do not crank it more than 180 degrees. If the engine doesn't start right away, then return the crank to the bottom/6 o'clock position and repeat the process. These steps will reduce the risk of a scenario where should the engine backfire, it causes the crank to be spun in the a counter clock-wise direction causing it to possibly break/injure your thumb, hand, arm, jaw, etc, especially if you fell forward/lost your balance from trying to turn to the crank beyond 180 degrees.
@Tyeumm yes, I've heard of guys dying from hand crank starters but that type of fatel injuries from crank starting a car was rare back then. Most injuries where more of the non -fatal broken figure or hand. Fatel injuries were rare with hand cranks but I do recall reading how inventor of the electric starter, Charles Kettering, was inspired to invent it in 1913 because a friend of his had died from injuries from a hand crank. The story goes that his friend had been driving when he stopped to help a lady whose car had stalled on a bridge. So he offered to hand crank her car but it backfired sending the crank to his jaw, breaking it, and later he got sepsis from this injury and died. Apparently, electrical systems on early cars were very unreliable in general. So I can believe your uncle could have died from injuries from a crank starter. But still it was rare and hopefully in this say and age If you're lucky enough to have an antique car with a hand crank starter then you'll be extra careful when using the hand crank.
