I was born deaf. When I was about 4 years old, fluid came pouring out of my ears. They did a hearing test, and I could hear. I’ve always struggled to hear. But, here lately I’m having a hell of a time. I’m having to read lips now more than anything. I can only hear certain tones really good.

same here and my audiologist won’t do anything, he told me “you need CI surgery on one side of hearing aids don’t work” but for some reason he cleaned my ears out and said “oh you’re fine” now, my bio mother was very manipulative and I swear she talked him into thinking I’m not deaf

I can imagine what people are going through. I just had wax problems in one ear, and I was asking people to repeat themselves. I thought my hearing had gone. It is strange walking around and hearing nothing, not even footsteps. People just take hearing for granted. I found that you need both ears, and working well.

Thank you for this incredibly informative video. I’m relatively young at 28 years old going on 29 in a month and for that reason alone I’ve always kind of brushed off comments by others about my hearing. About 10 years ago I joined the Marine Corps and did six years in the reserves working around amphibious assault vehicles With large tank engines and equipped with .50 caliber machine guns and automatic 40mm grenade launchers that are housed in an enclosed turret that is no larger than a small broom closet.. of course all of us 18-year-olds thought we were invincible and blew off hearing protection half the time because that didn’t look cool or it was annoying.. on top of all that I worked at indoor gun ranges and gun clubs at home while attending school. Fast forward to 2015 and I became a firefighter/paramedic for Houston where you can imagine I am pretty much constantly surrounded by loud engines, sirens, or other machinery... then of course loud music or movies and concerts. I’ve always had to ask people to repeat themselves whether it’s patients in the ambulance or my girlfriend sitting next to me on the couch at home, and I’ve always been the guy who has to be reminded to stop yelling because we are inside. I was very aware of it all but I guess I sort of refused to accept that my own foolishness over the years was causing an issue. When I was being introduced to a friend’s girlfriend last night at a restaurant a was becoming a little frustrated because I felt like she was mumbling and I had to ask her to repeat herself a couple of times and at one point my friend told her, “Oh yeah Patrick is like deaf you have to yell at him.” I glanced over at my girlfriend and she was agreeing with his statement. It was sort of a reality check so I spent the entire night researching hearing loss and reading symptoms, audiology exams, specialists, and hearing aids... which brought me to your channel. I plan on watching more of your videos at work today to gather more information and already booked an appointment to get a comprehensive hearing exam done. Thank you for this wealth of knowledge and material.

I have one-sided hearing impairment. According to the audiologist, my left ear is totally normal, like average hearing, while my right side is basically profound sensorineural hearing loss. They suggested cross-hearing aids and I did get it. But somehow for me, it only works nicely if I was having conversation in a quiet place such as if the person decides to be on my bad ear, the clarity becomes much better and I don't have to turn my head everytime to get clearer sounds. When in noisy environment, it somehow making me tired more since my ear (and my brain) have to work harder to block out the noise and it'll be harder if I'm wearing hearing aid due to it's nature of amplifying sounds which means they amplify the background noise as well. Since there's only one ear working to block out the noise and more sounds are coming in from the cross-hearing aid, it just making me having headaches. I dont think they have any hearing aids that could block out the noise right? Should I opt to use cochlear implant? I'm almost near 24yo. What do you suggest?

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  6 років тому +5

Hi Chichi. Its really hard to block out background noise when you only have 1 functioning ear. That being said, if you are in a noisy environment and there is only "dirty" noise on your right side, take the CROS off or turn it off. Perhaps your audiologist could program it a little differently to ensure it goes into "directional mode" so you aren't picking up as much noise. What you don't want to do is not wear the treatment. Being only 24 years old, you have years to adapt to the treatment. Another option is a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid, but you would likely experience the same problem with noise. You probably wouldn't qualify for a Cochlear Implant due to candidacy requirements. How long have you been adjusting to the CROS?

Earlier this year I realized that I can’t hear very well out of my left ear and I started hearing a buzzing sound, but I didn’t tell anyone and left it alone because I thought I would get my hearing back but my hearing wasn’t improving, it just got worse. I tried cleaning it with a q-tip a few days ago (I found out that using q-tips is bad for ears) and I started feeling a sharp pain in my ear. I went to a doctor yesterday and the doctor said it was just an ear infection, but I haven’t been able to hear out of it way before I was told about the ear infection.

After 8 months of pre tests etc, I am about to have my first of two Cochlea Implants fitted. I originally had Menieres in my left ear and then suffered from SNHL early this year. This happened suddenly and my hearing has worsened progressively since then, to a point that the sound distortion makes it almost impossible to understand anything at all. I cannot use a telephone, listen to TV and had to give my music up. I have 5 weeks to go until the operation, I feel confident of the outcome and have been warned not to expect immediate results but to persist until my brain becomes accustomed to the new implant. Hi doc, I recently turned 28 years old, and I've never experienced any type of hearing problems until now. However, I'm not entirely sure what has caused this recent issue. Maybe sharing a brief story could shed some light. You see, I had a couple of assignments due recently, and with only three days left until the deadline, I resorted to my usual routine of staying awake after work to finish them. During this time, I was taking my prescribed dose of 30mg of Ritalin. As a result, I only managed to get around four hours of sleep each night before waking up and starting all over again.
Now, on the last day of this assignment frenzy, something peculiar happened. Suddenly, all the sounds around me took on a robotic quality, accompanied by slight ear pressure. It was as if I could hear low-frequency vibrations in everything, from music and people's voices to the cars driving outside on the road. These vibrations seemed louder than the actual words or sounds they originated from. It was quite the surreal experience!
Realizing that things weren't improving, I decided to see an ENT specialist three days later. The doctor prescribed a steroid to see if it would restore my hearing, and thankfully, it did the trick. However, as soon as I started weaning off the medication after a week, the robotic sounds returned with a vengeance. It's like they were determined to stage a comeback concert!
Needless to say, I'm worried that this might become an ongoing issue, especially since it's affecting my ability to understand and engage in conversations with others. If any of this rings a bell for you (no pun intended), I would immensely appreciate your feedback. Help me bring an end to this bizarre auditory predicament!
Thank you so much for your assistance!

My pcp thinks it can be allergies bc of pain/feverish feeling in my ears. pain has spread to my good ear but not as much now since ive been taking allergy meds but the muffled/distortion on the right ear is still there. also when i listen to music on headphones my ears start to hurt and tinnitus has flared up. anyone else have this issue? i just want my hearing back to normal

I can feel fluid I steam my face four times a day so am very confused any help would be great? Hello. How are you. Doctor, I am with you, your brother from Iraq. I have a problem. I have been suffering from severe hearing loss ever since. At birth, I hear a little. He hears someone talking. A person in front of my ear, on the right side, hears a little. If I stay about two meters away from a person who does not hear, I will understand if he keeps his hearing clear and I will understand what he says. I want a problem. Hearing on the right side is 90%100 and the second is 100%100. I did not hear. Please doctor, save me. He has been treated. Many doctors did. Take advantage. May God heal them, may God Almighty heal them. Please, Your Honor, save me from treating severe hearing loss. Do you have it? Greetings to you 😢😢😢😢

    Hearing Problems
I have had trouble with hearing most of my life, mainly Neural-Deafness and Acoustic shock disorder so in speech, what I thought I may have heard is not always what was really said or complete. Like when someone says “The cow jumped over the moon” what it can sound like to me is, “da ow umpt ower da noon”, however I look at lips while listening and my brain is highly trained to extrapolate and interpret, so I still get on in life, although it is stressful at times. Consonants like a P, a G, a D, a J, a, K, a Q a, T, a, B, a V & F, I cannot tell apart. And I cannot hear the S sound, unless it is very loud.
This hearing deficit over works my brain and after a while I get what Audiology calls “Acoustical Fatigue” and so I usually snooze for bit after the struggle.
    Acoustic shock disorder
When there is an outburst of loud sound, it shocks my brain to pain, so the loud automobiles with no or poor mufflers, are terrible when they drive by my house. It is no wonder I do not like to target shoot, even with ear plugs on.
Most people that know me cannot fathom this hearing situation, like when they are talking to me a big loud truck goes by or a car without a muffler, they just keep on talking all-through the sound moment and expect me to understand. Any background sound like in a meeting, church, school, etc I am essentially 80% deaf during the background sound play. “You talk well and I hear you well, so I assume that you can hear as good as I do” This in not correct!
I have recently been doing some experimenting with my hearing loss and it looks promising, so any continued luck, I will be glad to pass it on to others.
    Robert Shrewsbury

A few years ago when I was 38 I was diagnosed with hearing loss in both ears. My ENT doctor told me after reviewing my audiology test results that my my hearing loss was like that of someone in their 60's with age related hearing loss. Since I was only 38 my doctor sent me for an MRI to rule out a tumor. Thankfully a tumor was ruled out. I wish I knew why I have hearing loss. I also have tinnitus and Meniere's disease. I've been wearing hearing aids for a little over a year now.

My daughter is deaf in one ear due to mumps. Is there anything she can do to repair this?
Travelling, even on a coach through mountains causes her major discomfort in her working ear so she gets very frightened 😪😪. Is there a way to stop the pressure affecting her ear pressure?

Is it possible for rapid vibrations to damage hearing, and make me hear ringing in my ears? I drive industrial trucks for a living. The quietest ones run at 80 decibels, but most of them run closer to 90 or higher, and I'm usually driving them for 10 hours or more with an hour lunch break.
I've noticed my ears ringing as time has gone on, and I'm wondering if the vibrations in the cab don't have something to do with it. I'm not talking about typical vibrations experienced in passenger trucks, these things are practically rattling themselves apart, even to the point of adding to the noise in the cab. I wear earplugs, and I shove them very deep into my ear canal, and although the sound is dampened, I can feel the vibrations travelling through the seats, and into my body, vibrating my head. Is it possible for these vibrations to be causing my cochlea to oscillate, giving the sensation of hearing, and resulting in the ringing I hear over the years? Especially if the earplugs are moving rapidly in my ear canal, sucking and compressing air on my ear drum?

I’ve got what I believe to be hearing loss since getting grommets placed a week ago for Eustachian tube dysfunction. My doctor has said my ears/the grommets are inflamed and infected. I’m very worried the hearing loss and intense very loud tinnitus will be there even after the grommets come out or the infection goes away
