I can remember the field trials m dad was in when I was younger. The field trials we had here in the US didn't require shooting. My dad's dogs were scored on tracking ability and their alerting of what they they had up a tree. My dad's dogs were also scored on their their formation just like at the dog shows. We had 8 dogs and each one of them were classed as # 1 in more than 20 trials. Over the years there was at least 100 awards given to these dogs. They all were perfect in all their hunting skills. What I liked the best was the no shoot rule. The dogs proved themselves worthy of the recognition.

US Retriever Field Trials are very different. Typically in All-Age Stakes there are 4 series. First series in usually 3-4 marks thrown as multiple from 100 to 400 yards from the team. The dog must remember all marks after picking up the "go-bird". Second series is typically a land blind which can be up to 400 yards and include a "poison bird" mark the dog must not pick up before completing the blind retrieve. Third series is typically a water blind which can be up to 400 yards, include points scented with bird scent and diversions. The fourth series is typically water marks with is usually 3-4 marks and can be up to 400 yards including angle entries and angle exits, island marks, marks in the water and marks far from the shore after swimming hundreds of meters.

Couldn't you just fire a weighted toy bird into the air instead of using real ones?

Device Squad you don't get the same unpredictability, if you are worried about how humane it is, the shot is strong enough to kill with one hit, so little to no pain

No, a dog that would retrieve a toy bird could happily take apart a real one given the chance. I guess you could launch the same bird over and over again but it's not optimal (its smell changes, how do you launch it, etc).

So let me summise, most/all of these birds don't get eaten, so the extent of their existence is to provide 2 seconds of fun for you. That means you have a stratospheric level of self-importance. Sociopaths.
