I agree adding the strut would definitely help. But, I still think the weakest part remains where the operator bracket attaches to the garage door with lag screws. It seems to me it would be stronger if two holes were drilled all the way through the U strut and have the operator bracket attached with two small bolts with washers and use the lag screws for the remaining holes on the operator bracket.
Had two installed on my door, fixed the issues. Also had new wheels installed too.
Great video, very informative, excellent job explaining things. The average Joe can learn from this
Thank you again! I am working hard to get my information correct.
Party Time. I enjoyed the video. very detailed info.
I don't know why they designed the strut so that the force exerted by the opener is perpendicular to the weak axis of the strut. Frankly I think a piece of stiff angle iron would do a better job of managing the stress. Thanks for showing how these are installed. One of the few sources out there.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I hope it all works out well.
The function of the strut is to prevent the door from bowing in toward the floor or the opener motor. When the motor starts to lift the door the force is applied at right angles to the strong axis of the strut. The force of the opener should be distributed across the whole panel by a wide door attachment bracket that is secured by the screws of 2 hinges.
If the door is properly balanced the opener will only have to exert 5-10 lbs of force to lift the door. That is well within the limits of the strut and the door.
Unbalanced doors cause most of the issues.
Thanks for your informative series of videos! My windowed 9100 doors didn't come with struts, so I called WD and the local store delivered the larger struts, similar looking to those in this video. Only my struts don't fit over the ridge easily, like in the video, and it's VERY tight squeeze across a 9' door :-O Does it sound like they provided correct struts, or perhaps something for different model door? The reason I'm doubting myself is because the driver that delivered seemed confident about getting me the correct struts, even though that is the only type strut they carry. Any advise is very much appreciated, as I'm an old hack :)
Great video. Thank you. Do you have a link for the strut you installed? I am only seeing modular products. I would prefer one solid piece, as you installed. Thank you.
Hello. Unfortunately the solid piece strut is no longer available on Amazon. I have been suggesting this modular version. amzn.to/3sxRdZO
can i place a strut over the glass panels to prevent a possible break in?
Sure, if you want to add unnecessary weight to the door and strain the motor or the lifting springs. Anyone attempting to break into your garage is not climbing through the garage door windows. That strut will not stop them from pulling the opener disconnect rope through a broken window.
For Wayne Dalton doors does it need to be a 3” strut or can a 2 1/4” strut be used?
Hello. It's best to go with a 3 inch strut. But you could us a 2" ... it's just harder to apply.

What size /type screws do you use to install the strut?
Hinge Screw, Self Driller,
Let’s party!
Thanks for the support my friend!
That is why you use a hack saw.
Your GoPro camera mounted on your head makes viewers dizzy. Other than that, good video.
Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you like the video.
