That's the incredible Doug Shreeve on bass who apparently quit playing professionally in early 2014 . Here's his musical goodbye.. :( ua-cam.com/video/snukItACtZA/v-deo.html
Doug Shreeve seems to me to be one of the bassists who was most comfortable with Virgil. manages to understand virgil's musical head, performs solo more melodically, than changing scales throughout the progression.
When my guitar teacher showed me Virgil donati two years ago, when I was 12 years old, my ears instantly fell in love and I never stopped listening to it. Once I want to become so good that I could play in a band with him That's my big dream
I have recently checked out many drummers. Impressed by the work of Gavin Harrison, Thomas Lang, Danny Carey, coming from Bruford, Pert, Bonham and others. All of them with different styles and techniques but listening to Donati is taking me to another level. Something different in music dimension is being coming up since then in me.
Dude! I feel very much the same. My favorite from the start was always Peart, and then I branched out to Carey, Bruford, Jon Theodore and some others (definitely check out Jon’s stuff with Mars Volta if you haven’t already). I was convinced Peart and Carey were the best ever until I discovered Virgil a few years ago. There will never be another drummer on this mans level. Everything he does is leagues above. His limb independence is mind blowing. Sometimes I doubt that he’s even a human
I think the thing that sets Donati apart from a lot of the other super drummers is his ability to rhythmically get "inside" the ideas that the other players are playing and improvising. It's one thing to have advanced independence and rhythm vocabulary and throw them out there at will (like licks) but it's another thing entirely to be able to react and complement the advanced rhythmic vocabulary of others in the heat of the moment. Vinnie Colaiuta is the prime master of that kind of listening and reaction. I think Virgil has that kind of ability as well.
A long time drummer myself. While all performances are top notch I look and listen to Doug on the bass and, wow, I love THE BASS on this track. In fact, the whole record, "In This Life", is forever etched into my mind. I listened to this almost exclusively during my tour of Myanmar 2016 and every time I hear a track from this album it sends me right back to that country and what I explored and experienced there. Don't even get me started on the song 'The Fall Of Dreams'...... Thank YOU, Virgil and all musicians on this album!!!!
Allan Holdsworth is a hugely influential artist for Virgil. They'd been working together(touring, composing etc...) so we definitely hear the elements of the sounds from AH :)
Nine years later and Virgil’s music is still one of my go to daily listening albums. The musicianship is outstanding and the music wonderful. I wish I had people near me at this level to make music with and jam with. Definitely inspiring Virgil.
I met Virgil in Sth Florida a few years back ,he's an amazing and dazzling player . His playing sounds very scientific but entertaining at the same time . I took pics with the guy he's a very down to earth and cool person . If he comes back in town I'm definitely gonna check it out
Virgil, I met you from On The Virg, then I met Planet X and Ring of Fire; then Devil's Slingshot and Seven The Hardway; then you with Kocab, etc... I really loved that records. Also you and MacAlpine together are amazing. I always liked your jazz fusion vibe and you orchestral works too, but you have a talent to play Metal music. Believe this: You are a drummer who know how to print a heavy mark on it. Your drums tone exhales this.
Music stays subjective; you can get very strong emotions from very simple songs too.. But if you're talking of technicallity level yes.. I think Virgil Donati is probably the best.
I know man. The first time I watched the "In This Life" documentary I just about shit my pants. Every single musician he's had on that album is an absolute beast. I used to think Dream Theater was a paragon for musical complexity, but it almost feels like pop music compared to this. I can't even listen to Tool at all any more, haha.
SeventhOne I'm not sure. The only guys I know of are Virgil and Doug Shreeve (the bass player, who played in Planet X with Virgil). Which guitarist are you referring to? 6 or 7 stringer?
@@hangrosta9985 he's amazing no doubt I love him but those changes voicings would fit holdsworth style of soloing no doubt Marco is a phenomenal guitar player.
I'm trying to stop myself watching this video - ultra tasteful, areas of technical sophistication but never overpowering a very smooth yet wistful theme. I agree strongly with Victor Windsor's comment - it's all about taking people somewhere. More please!!
The drum fill at 3:30 to 3:38 blows my mind every time I go back and listen to this live recording. It sounds like it's being played in reverse. I've never heard shit like that ever in my life. It sounds so good and fits perfectly. Virgil comes up with some of the coolest section-transition fills you'll ever hear.
This tune reminded me of my youth, when I listened thousand of times the same tunes by great musicians (Steps Ahead, Spyro Gyra, Jeff Lorber, Allan Holdsworth, Pat Metheny...) without getting bored...this is a masterpiece Mr. Donati and you are great as usual! I never heard Marco Sfogli playing before now (I have to be thankful to you for this too). By the way...You already played with my favorite guitarist ever (Allan Holdsworth): what you think to have a trio with Victor Wooten? (It would be my dream team). Ciao da Napoli! Victor Windsor
Man, the more I listen to this the more I wish this drum take was on the album. Fucking ferocious man. The album version is great, but there's something edgier about this one. Virgil seems like he's ready to explode in the more intensive sections, and in the more laid-back sections he seems to sit in the groove better. Also, at 2:50...... yea, I'd be smiling too :D
Amazing song. Love bass player and Virgil looking at each other 3:49 after bass solo (great)...like "how was? Good exit Virgil? Did well with the notes/tempo?" and Virgil confirms...I call this telepathy all the way.
We can't wait to see you in Port Elizabeth South Africa on the 4th July, Virgil. Last time I saw you was 10 years ago in Johannesburg. How time goes by so quickly.
Great music! I noticed most videos, Virgil has the toms mics facing down at the edge. I tried this and loved it. You get more attack, and less cymbal bleed. I have a feeling he knows a lot about recording as well as playing.
The bassist is Doug Shreeve, awesome performance
Does anybody know what happened to him? I can't find any info after 2014.
Freaking bass sounds awesome.
:)))
The bass solo is wicked.
I know right? Holy jeebus!
Yep, you are right!
Doug is a beast!!!

Yes. Too bad it's also barely audible. Ffs, the drums were louder.
The interaction between Virgil and Doug is really amazing.
My jaw just drop seeing the bass player , totally amazing .
:)
That Bass playing, SOUNDS AWESOME, VERY DEEP/HEAVY Sound. Donati One hell of a player 2.
Phenomenal bassist!
Who is the bassist?
SeventhOne
Doug Shreeve :)
Tom Unwin Difficult to really know how you could get better than that.

I always come back to this one, such a beautiful performance.
My God, this is an Eargasm!!
at 2:11, Virgil is the master of incorporating crash cymbal hits that aren't accompanied by a bass drum.
+Tommy Dimmel Dude! I watched that part at least 20 times in a row. OMG!
And some how it works perfectly.
And some how it works perfectly.

He is the only one. His technique is unique.

Perfectly stated and exampled. 100000% agree!

Is it just me or does someone else hear Allan Holdsworths composition technique in some of the parts?
Great song and outstanding playing!

I hear it too.
INCREDIBLE.
Beyond epic, got the CD immediately after 10 seconds of hearing
Amazing production. That's how this sort of thing should be done.
Still listening to this 9 years later in 2023. Thank you Mr Donati
I LOVE this tune
Very, very nice!

Thanks everyone.
You all, are fantastic musicians.
Wow..
Fantastic!
Virgil is amazing... The time changes out of this dimension..
Donati is the best drummer ever !
In terms of odd time measures that's true ;)

Tremenda banda,hermoso tema
THAT BASS SOLO!!!!??????????!!!!!!!!
The gig in Suolahti was incredible! Thanks for signing my Moonbabies album Virgil! It meant a lot to me
Moonbabies was great album...needless to say im jealous that yours is signed and mine isnt lol

Simply monumental!
What's the recipe of that killer bass sound Doug has, I wonder.
Music on the highest level.
Music stays subjective; you can get very strong emotions from very simple songs too..

And boring as ever too
Fuck me that is beyond musicianship. Amazing virtuosity and accomplishment. I am in awe.

Alex Khouri So tell me - I just made a connection. Is that guitarist Jack Jones from the old 'Southern Sons' band?
SeventhOne I'm not sure. The only guys I know of are Virgil and Doug Shreeve (the bass player, who played in Planet X with Virgil). Which guitarist are you referring to? 6 or 7 stringer?
Alex Khouri The dude with the eyeliner and beard
SeventhOne Not sure, but a quick Google search of "Jack Jones" reveals someone who definitely isn't in this video.
Extraordinarilly good.
Cool, fun stuff!
I love this song
Virgil got the nastiest chops! Red air session 2?
This is another level of musicality masters in one word.
Sevag Hadjian After, and following Allan Holdsworth musical universe.
@@hangrosta9985 yes Allan is a musical genius a gift from the universe.
By the way Marco's solo was melodic but if it was holdsworth it would have sounded a lot different

The bass solo makes me feel like I'm in an Alien videogame for some reason.
This so great. Beautiful and masterful, Virgil.
Beautiful melody on this track.Donati's classical influences on piano.
just super !!
Even today, amazing!!
My mind was blown. This was just... WOW, great job guys.
We need more of this!!!
Great music and I like the video too, thank you.
What a genius!!! Awesome
Great jazz fusion track ! Thank you Mr Donati !
Ah ah 😂 crazy , stunning
What a huge bass sound, man... and that play is unbeliveable!
Yes indeed!. Bass player reminds me a heck load of Steve Morse.
thanks for this music in these times :)
5:21 working that ride note into a fill like that was pure genius. Never seen the likes of before.
DAMN! World class all the way!!!

Great job. The best quality this year. Well done guys.
The greatest
My hero even as I listened to Neil Peart for 30 years. I have 20 of them added to VIRGIL!

Well.. everyone in this album are beast. Truly inspirational.
Great playing. Great composition.
Virgil always looks like he's worried about something.
vkotis if my brain had to keep track of all those drum parts i'd look pretty worried too LOL
+Julio Del Prado hahahaha anyone who wants to play this MUST be worry.
I say it;s concentration not worry. Some people express it differently
He's probably worried about the drummers who are likely to lose their minds watching him perform. Just kidding.
"am I progressive enough?"

What you mean?
Felipe Brito This > DT
I don't think so.
agree with u Alexis....
Sure! It is way better to see Virgili playing his freaking amazing music! With all respect for DT
Thank you for your music!
All recorded on RME Fireface UFX and Micstacy pres. One of the most underrated interfaces around. Sounds killer guys.

what incredible musicians !!
I have never seen anyone with this kind of knowledge about subdivisions. Every one is a step above
Wow, really impressed. Loved the bass solo and all the rest. Keep it up.
Nice tune!!!
I just purchased this album, can't wait to hear it all!
Flawless with an "improvised" feel.
Ther must be an inversely proporational relationship between hair style and bass player awesomness
Very interesting mix, well done
Like the track, extra 2 points for the guitarist's mascara and the bass player, freakien amazing..
Perfect in all ways... PERFECT !
Bass solo with drums it's wonderful. Great connexion :)
Absolutely, insanely incredible.
Awesome playing Virgil! and cool shoes by the way :)
you are the best Virgil admirable and unique and exquisite ...
that final stare into the depth of my soul
