I've been a chef for 20 yrs. Covid was absolutely a huge shock to the industry, but we are 3-4 years POST lockdown.....the restaurants that are thriving made a pivot and kept on rolling, those that didn't are using it as an excuse.
There's a lot of reasons why restaurants close, but these big mega chains like Chili's, Applebee's, On the Border, Red Lobster, tgi fridays, olive garden, etc have been on a steady decline for A LONG time.
All of these big chains suffer from the EXACT same problem. They have a bean counter making decisions at the corporate level that's too far removed from operations, quality and service are never factored into decisions, just profits. You can only cut costs so far before your food and service goes to shit. The food and service just isn't good at ANY of these places.
They are microwaving entrees, prepackaging entrees, making their sauces in a factory. Did you know you can wipe the grill marks OFF of a chilis chicken breast (it's not cooked on a grill, they're fake grill marks painted on the chicken).
Restaurants that have been focusing on food quality and service have been thriving in the same economy these mega chains are failing, with the same food cost inflation, wage hikes etc.
As for Uber eats/door dash etc, they've been stealing business from the local pizza joint and fast food. Before the 3rd party apps, the only choice for delivery was pizza or Chinese. It's been a huge boost for mom and pop places (though not without some headaches).

I avoid chains. Food is horrible and expensive. Locals serve better food for less money. The chains closing are just nasty plus they have huge overhead. President,VPs, DEI Director and managers, district managers, is just doesn't stop.
      You make very good points.

@andrewehrmantraut4742 I was a multi-unit restaurant franchise owner for over 15 years, and it's interesting listening to people at various levels within the restaurant industry give their take on how businesses operate and what they think owners should and shouldn't do.
I agree with some of the things you said and disagree with others. I just wanted to acknowledge your perspective. Thanks for the insight.

Exactly, man. I'm big into fitness and have been making my own meals for years now. If you actually have some basic cooking skills and just put in a little effort you are golden, as you mentioned you save a ton of money and it's much healthier than what you'd get at a restaurant. Even something like going to Starbuck's is expensive and can quickly add up. Imagine you get a cup of coffee on the way into work 5 days per week and it costs $5 each, which I think is actually cheap compared to there lol. That's $25/week or about $1300 per year if you do this routine without fail. That's money that could have been used to pay off debt or invest and let grow over the long term.

I understand all of these financial woes of the restaurants, in Washington state they have to pay their waitresses I think $20 an hour, so how is a small restaurant supposed to cope with that? But, for my $16 for one plate of noodles in a Chinese restaurant I think they should be good! I think they should be well prepared and tasty and not taste like garbage, and this is a consistent problem that the restaurants have. They've raised their prices to keep up with inflation and wages, but the quality of ingredients has gone down and the cooking quality has gone in the basement, and that doesn't have anything to do with the economy! I don't know what the reason is, but I'm tired of dropping 40 or 50 for a very small evening out, and walking away thinking "that was terrible!"

The reason is upscale restaurants focus on quality and stayed consistent. The non upscale restaurants that focused on lower prices thought they could replace their food with cheaper food and therefore decrease the quality of their food while raising their prices to where there’s no meaningful difference in price between them and the upscale restaurants. The result is people have decided to go to the upscale restaurants to get the higher quality food for virtually the same price, because there’s no reason not to. The non upscale restaurants decided to eliminate their own competitive advantage and price themselves out of the market and handed all of the leverage over to the upscale restaurants to crush them. They obviously didn’t have to raise their prices for lower quality food considering the upscale restaurants buy much high quality, more expensive food and charge almost the same price as the non upscale restaurants charge for their lower quality food. It was entirely self inflicted by a lack of common sense.

I think restaurants are suffering because the experience sucks, in lots of cases. I don't to pay $150 to take the family out AND get crappy food and poor service.

Citizens United ruling by SCOTUS about 10 years ago needs to be overturned! This will put voters back in charge as the citizens the politicians need to impress while in office, not the massive big $$$ campaigns that most of our politicians now expect from corporate donors through their Super PACs.

You should talk about the 25% cut that most of these delivery companies take off the top from the restaurants…in addition to the credit card fees that the restaurant has to pay. So out of a $60 tab, the restaurant only sees about $42-$44. Their answer is the restaurants should increase their prices (which Uber Eats, DoorDash, etc. encourage because they make more money because their cut is % based). This only makes the restaurants look like they are price gouging.
