Government IS corruption ✅
I could not agree more wholeheartedly
I think it has very little to do with foot traffic and mainly to do with the fact that meals are up 30-40% from a few years ago and many people simply can't afford to eat out.
if its not better than i can make at home, i'm not going out.
Yes. Restaurants are a treat for average families. Regarding the downtown locations, some politicians (Mineapolis, LA, Chicago, New York), the media, and all corporations supported the one sided George Floyd issue. They donated to BLM and Antifa. Riots do not attract customers. Tourist areas were closed for no reason, and entire strips were bankrupted (The Wharf in San Francisco). Conservatives are waiting for apologies from Target for baby trans underwear and grown men in the ladies bathroom. We aren't holding our breath but are holding our money.
Bingo!!
Went to Applebee's 2 years ago and sat there for almost 2 hours. They had 2 large racks of take out food sitting there. I told them they need to take better care of their sit down customers who buy drinks, and desserts, pay sales tax, and tip more. I told them I won't be back ever again, and have stuck to my word
I went to Applebee's and specifically asked for a steak meal without the cheese as our friend was highly allergic. We asked the already disrespectful waitress to please give us a new one. She returned with the same steak but just having scaped off the cheese, you could tell. When prompted again reminding her of the serious allergy she went "Ugghhhh fiiiine" as she walked off. At the end of the sub par meal and sub par service, the tip was already included in the bill.
Absolute garbage experience. F grade, never again.
They pay sales tax on that order too. As far as tip, that varies just like the people eating in the restaurant. Some will tip very high and some won't but that delivery food isn't tax free. If anything it's almost a tax itself to get it delivered. A $20 meal will be almost $45 delivered.
2 hours? They don’t deserve your business!
I run two restaurants in Central KY, Uber eats went from emailing me quarterly or so to sell me on joining. Now they are straight up sending contracts on a weekly basis with reminders "don't forget to sign our docusign link". Not even sales anymore, they're panicking. Cold calling contracts into strangers emails with zero pitch. Dirty moves.
Magically, private equity buying up restaurants and turning them over to make short term profits, and forcing them bankruptcy, does not get mentioned. I wonder why…🤔
This right here!!!!
They take over good restaurants than consistently cut back on quality and service to make big profits until they can't cut back anymore and than go out of business.
You nailed. Asset stripping. Primary reason Red Lobster is going down. A bunch of Red Lobster real estate was sold for capital to pay back the acquisition loan, now the businesses is not profitable due to the added cost of a high rent. That is a non-issue for the purchaser and was the plan all along. Should not even be legal.
It’s at least 95% of the cause of these shut downs. It has nothing to do with Big Pharm
You are right!!!
It’s happening with my current company…. PE is buying up businesses and forcing the little guy out.
Used to eat out twice a week, 10 bucks for descent lunch w 15% tip, why not, now 25 bucks for sketchy food demanded tips lousy service ~ last four years have eaten out only 2 times healthier for it!!
I can only speak for myself but I refuse to pay for a burger lunch and salad lunch for my wife and myself for $60 when it used to cost me $25 just a few years ago. Now we cook for ourselves for a fraction of that price and cook our way. It’s about value as much as not accepting the gouging that’s going on.

@@warrennythat doesn’t mean that everyone is ordering Uber eats, it can mean that they are cooking at home. But you do make a good point 👍
I've been a chef for 20 yrs. Covid was absolutely a huge shock to the industry, but we are 3-4 years POST lockdown.....the restaurants that are thriving made a pivot and kept on rolling, those that didn't are using it as an excuse.
There's a lot of reasons why restaurants close, but these big mega chains like Chili's, Applebee's, On the Border, Red Lobster, tgi fridays, olive garden, etc have been on a steady decline for A LONG time.
All of these big chains suffer from the EXACT same problem. They have a bean counter making decisions at the corporate level that's too far removed from operations, quality and service are never factored into decisions, just profits. You can only cut costs so far before your food and service goes to shit. The food and service just isn't good at ANY of these places.
They are microwaving entrees, prepackaging entrees, making their sauces in a factory. Did you know you can wipe the grill marks OFF of a chilis chicken breast (it's not cooked on a grill, they're fake grill marks painted on the chicken).
Restaurants that have been focusing on food quality and service have been thriving in the same economy these mega chains are failing, with the same food cost inflation, wage hikes etc.
As for Uber eats/door dash etc, they've been stealing business from the local pizza joint and fast food. Before the 3rd party apps, the only choice for delivery was pizza or Chinese. It's been a huge boost for mom and pop places (though not without some headaches).
I avoid chains. Food is horrible and expensive. Locals serve better food for less money. The chains closing are just nasty plus they have huge overhead. President,VPs, DEI Director and managers, district managers, is just doesn't stop.
You make very good points.
@andrewehrmantraut4742 I was a multi-unit restaurant franchise owner for over 15 years, and it's interesting listening to people at various levels within the restaurant industry give their take on how businesses operate and what they think owners should and shouldn't do.
I agree with some of the things you said and disagree with others. I just wanted to acknowledge your perspective. Thanks for the insight.
this is true
You are on point. Well written and accurate. I made the mistake of going to Olive Garden 3 years ago because they were offering a free meal for Veterans on Veterans Day. I will never step foot in OG or any of the “restaurants” you mentioned. I do not want to describe what I was served as “food” … let’s just say, microwaves were used to heat it up. Nasty.

There are a few food chain restaurants / local restaurants that are really good to great. For example I'm usually a sucker for any restaurant place that cooks really good to great burgers. So me living in the south Florida area that's close to Miami, the two burger places I usually go to are Shake Shack or Burgermeister ( usually the one in Miami Beach because of route to drive there is much quicker ).
You can make MUCH BETTER food at home, by avoiding seed oils, vegetable oils and buying organic... no restaurant will do ANY of that, because it's a business.
@buddyrevell511 organic is a scam dude. But to each their own.

Many restaurants depended on Weekday sales from office commercial towers which are now empty due to remote work.
I'm visiting Southern California right now, and I'm angry. A very popular restaurant chain here, which every location was always for years packed and worth the wait, now looks like ghost locations. They are open, just empty. California's policies have done this destruction.

The lockdowns helped me realize I don't mind eating at home to be healthier and save money.
Exactly, man. I'm big into fitness and have been making my own meals for years now. If you actually have some basic cooking skills and just put in a little effort you are golden, as you mentioned you save a ton of money and it's much healthier than what you'd get at a restaurant. Even something like going to Starbuck's is expensive and can quickly add up. Imagine you get a cup of coffee on the way into work 5 days per week and it costs $5 each, which I think is actually cheap compared to there lol. That's $25/week or about $1300 per year if you do this routine without fail. That's money that could have been used to pay off debt or invest and let grow over the long term.
The lockdowns made me accept death with delight considering how stupid everyone here on earth is

Lentils rice and chicken is dirt cheap! Hell nothing wrong with frozen veggies as long as you wash and soak them!

Same here. Restaurant kitchens are nasty too.
As someone who most of my work was commercial restaurant re-imaging up until 2020. It wasn't only the restaurants. It was thousands of owner operated construction businesses as well. After April 2020, restaurants completely stopped spending on remodeling and imaging... they were just trying to stay afloat during a time that people couldn't go sit down and eat like they used to.
You’re not addressing the effect that social media has played in the destruction of restaurants.
People don’t go out and socialize with friends anymore
Actually the opposite, social media has boosted spending for restaurants. Food, tourism, entertainment spending has increased also the reason why we have inflation.

May I ask you to investigate the regulations imposed on small farmers in Oregon . Is killing all the small farms.
I understand all of these financial woes of the restaurants, in Washington state they have to pay their waitresses I think $20 an hour, so how is a small restaurant supposed to cope with that? But, for my $16 for one plate of noodles in a Chinese restaurant I think they should be good! I think they should be well prepared and tasty and not taste like garbage, and this is a consistent problem that the restaurants have. They've raised their prices to keep up with inflation and wages, but the quality of ingredients has gone down and the cooking quality has gone in the basement, and that doesn't have anything to do with the economy! I don't know what the reason is, but I'm tired of dropping 40 or 50 for a very small evening out, and walking away thinking "that was terrible!"
Wages do NOT cause inflation. They are a symptom.
The $20 per hour wouldn't be a problem if America didn't have the ridiculous compulsory tipping culture ... every other country in the world pays their waiters /hospitality staff a decent basic wage and that cost is factored into the price. We tip if we want to for good service - not because the staff member needs the tip to pay their rent.
The USA is THE ONLY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD that pays their hospitality staff so badly - and they think this is ok 🙄

I can't help but wonder. At some point, maybe around 2010, we had a flood of restaurants hit the market. They can't all survive, too many franchises. And now that groceries are at your door when you arrive from work, home cooking is easier than ever.
I have done well for myself. I am upper middle class. Retired at 52 years old. I am not a one percenter or filthy rich but i am comfy. I just experience this. Took my husband out for Father’s Day with the kids. They put a 18% tip on the bill. Our waiter was excellent and I was annoyed at first but then I said luckily the waiter was excellent. However, I would have given him more since he went above and beyond. I probably won’t go there again since they add a tip automatically. My husband said, what if he was an awful server then what. I can see that happening everywhere forced tipping.
I just experience this. Took my husband out for Father’s Day with the kids. They put a 18% tip on the bill. I was annoyed at first but then I said luckily the waiter was excellent. I think that is what other restaurants are going to start doing and they are going to lose customers. I probably won’t go there again for that reason.
@@madamenoire6830 I was fortunate to travel a few places. No tips whatsoever: Thailand, Vietnam, France, Italy, England. Ask for tips: US, Canada (Toronto 18%-20%, I’m not sure other parts of Canada). California is even worse, tips (plus surcharge in some cases) and don’t ask me why!
@@madamenoire6830 If there was a mandatory tip and I didn’t receive excellent service, I would complain to the manager. That’s actually worse than for the waiter than receiving a smaller tip. If the circumstances made it embarrassing, such as it being a large group, a client, or a very special occasion, I would call and speak to the manager during a time when the restaurant wasn’t busy.
Low quality ingredients. Unhealthy food, 20% tips plus delivery charges. Are you kidding me? I would rather have dinner at home with my family
It cost $150 with no drinks plus. But then you have a service fee, cook fee, bus boy fee then you expected to tip wait staff on top of it. Done with it.
Rents doubling, car insurance doubling, food up 40% means people don’t have money.
The biggest profit in a restaurant is alcohol, and if everybody was sitting at home, not able to go to the restaurants, even though you can get Uber to bring you alcohol from that restaurant it’s not the same. There’s a very small profit margin in the food aspect of it
Soda is also a huge profit maker.
Have Uber bring you the bottle and drink at home
Trump / Fauci 2024!!!
@@Sweet-fn6poMost people are social drinkers though. They want to be able to go out and drink with friends, not sit at home
@@nashi._.7563 My comment was only for people to save and stop complaining about prices.
Uber is just a delivery service right? I don’t understand how they are taking money away from the restaurant industry.
You couldn't pay me enough to buy any UA-camrs 'merch'
I wouldn't take it free
if we're being honest. 💁♂️
He is worth 350 million and hocks all of that merch. Like he really needs the money.
Inflation. The first thing Families cut out is dining at Restaurants. Including fast food which can cost close to $200 bucks a month for family of 4. Or much higher.
I stopped eating out after buying my house in 2008. I buy a couple of weeks worth of groceries at a time, so I'm kind of locked into eating those groceries so they don't go to waste. When covid hit I didn't have to change my routine much, except to wear a mask inside the store and do the "6ft distance dance".
12 foot is better
Mask and 3 ft were all BS made up Fauci lies. I was kicked out of places but never complied. Saw the lies coming from a mile away
Conforming to stupidity
Screw dealerships, so glad they are going away. Just a bunch of crooks that give no value to anyone. Same with restaurants, had enough of the sanctimonious food servers demanding tips and expecting massive money to write an order and deliver a plate. Good riddance.
What about the whole tipping issue? Prices has gone up in restaurants as well as tip “expectation” now even at Applebees the default tip is expected 20-25 percent. People don’t want those high prices on top of adding a hefty to tip to a typical mid income family
People eat local not Corporate restaurants. This is great. Local is the way to go.
Bidenenomonics
No it’s corporate greed even after inflation back at 3% it’s also mis-managed covid by Trump leading to inflation in the first place
Bottom up middle out it's working like a charm life is alot easier for the poor and middle class let's give thank's to the liberal democratic party for the good times

Darden is one of the biggest restaurant companies. They own Ruth's Chris , Eddie V's, Capital Grille, Olive Garden, Longhorn, Bahama Breeze, Season's 52, Yard House and Cheddars - they use to own Red Lobster. Total about 1800 restaurants. It's like hotel companies soon there will just be a few big companies controlling everything.
I make 6 figures and cut my eating out money by more than 50%
yes because eating at home is healthier cleaner and better for you and its too expensive with drinks and tips ect
Trump / Fauci 2024!!!
There needs to be something done against lobbyists,
It's disgusting it boils down who is willing to "Invest" the most money into lobbying congressmen & women.
There needs to be something done about it.
If you order Uber eats your still ordering food from a restaurant restaurants are still profiting from Uber eats.
No one profits from Uber eats or Doordash, the setup is borderline detrimental to the restaurant, but with lockdowns the restaurants had no choice but to participate in the 3rd-party delivery scam or shut down entirely.
To an extent yes, but people typically order less food when they Uber eats to factor in fees, tip & delivery charges. Alcohol & soda sales have gone down. Most people are social drinkers, they want to be able to go out and drink with friends not sit at home.
Another reason for the closures...
Expensive, shitty (bad for you) food.
What a trend that got revealed hats off for the value created man
Both Applebee's and Red Lobster has closed here in Greenville SC. I was wondering why and this video explains it.😢
Never used Uber eats.
None of us can afford to eat out anymore!!!!!
I worked in restaurants as a young man as did my wife in her teens, and we value that experience today, greatly (me in my 60s, she in her 50s). The loss of 200,000 restaurants we see all around us, and on average, if there were ten employees per location, that’s 2,000,000 jobs!!! And prices are going up, up, up at the places still open. This really is a gut punch to America!
I hate ordering just to see a tip % then get a look. For take out
I tip $1 on take out
Tom as usual makes the best point
41.9% of adults in the U.S. have obesity so less food might actually be a good thing.....

Don't forget the ridiculous sized soda's they drink with free refills. Aussie married to an American. Don't see too many of them drinking water.
@@shelby6622 Do you have ANY idea what's in the water in North America?!? It's healthier to drink Mountain Dew at this point.

A lot of older Americans went out to eat to hang out and helped support these guy's not Uber eats DIED with the China Bug!!! At the end of 2020 and in 2021 there are still some of us still around just not enough.
I know you guys do everything you can to protect business but you can't have this discussion without talking about private equity buying these companies and sucking them dry.
Ruby Tuesday
Their lack of stating that fact speaks volumes
There's no reason to do that unless the business is already failing so badly that their assets are worth more than the business.
I went to Applebees a few weeks ago for the first time in years and it was priced as a high end restaurant that you go to on special occasions. I couldn’t believe the prices, it blew my mind how anybody goes to eat there.
I still don't understand how resturants uber eats and phram have anything to do?
