Exhaustion
In D&D, some special abilities and environmental hazards such as starvation, freezing, or making FIVE ANIMATED SPELLBOOKS IN A WEEK! Cause a most dreaded and unknown condition.
Exhaustion...
found in Appendix A of the PHB. Exhaustion is a great way to immediately add some serious stakes to a game for high and low level players alike.
Mostly it's used as a way to handle drowning or wilderness travel, As a DM I love home-brewing exhaustion monsters. One of my favorites actually does very little damage but

Sounds like a great thing to throw at the Barbarian while the party is dealing with a more obviously dangerous threat. They ignore the marrow-sucking parasite for a round or two, assuming the Barb can deal with it, and suddenly he's a barbarian with half HP and disadvantage on saves, aka "a guy". And he's now two rounds away from instadeath.

@@guidojacobs2002 It's death spiral time.
DMs: I highly recommend the variant rule where PCs take one level of exhaustion every time they're knocked unconscious at 0hp. It helps counter the problem of Healing Word making fights a game of whack-a-mole.
Oh I quite like this idea. It also helps Spare the Dying shine a bit more instead of being basically redundant, because you can stabilize in an instant without needing to get them back up and eat exhaustion, as opposed to getting conked but actually having time to naturally recover
Cool idea! Nicking it 😊
I always employ this rule in my grittier campaigns, raises the stakes so a cleric cant just toss a first lvl spell and your up snd ready to go every time. I do usually make the players roll a con save on recovery to dee if they get it cuz i run grueling encounters... and that can stack up and tpk fast if they dont have a way to counter it.
@@Starfloofle Unfortunately they would still take exhaustion, however if you could homebrew it in that Spare the Dying grants a chance to revive without taking exhaustion (DC 10 con save or something).

*Stays down a few rounds later*
I think exhaustion is a good "pushed past your limits" cost to give players in a big final battle. For the cost of 3 levels of exhaustion you get to reuse a spent ability, use a high level spell slot, or add some big bonus to on attacks damage roll.
3 levels of exhaustion is immediately debilitating. Even for one level of exhaustion that would rarely be worth it

Was playing a mycanid character from the underdark who had come to the surface in hopes of creating a colony. The DM over the course of 2 hours made walking from one town to another the worst game I had ever experienced.
I was the party Cleric. Death Domain since my character was a mushroom and as such saw death as the next step of life. The DM allowed me to raise the dead as baby mycanids which were just derpy little adorable mushroom babies that derped around being cute and had no actual mechanical value. My character was hyper protective of then being that the baby mycanids were her children. Over thw course of the walk from one town to the other all the baby mycanids died from sunlight and my character got 5 points of exhaustion. During this we had been suffering attack after attack from random encounters and it got to the point that the other players were trying everything to keep me alive such as using up all their water, using spells if they had any, digging holes for my character to lay in to escape heat, and by the half way point dragging my near dead character (who was about 500lbs because she was an 8ft tall mushroom made out of woody material) to town. Wasnt until the next week that the DM admited that he was kind of in the wrong and had been enjoying watching me struggle. Felt bad afterwards. I left the game though leaving the party without a healer. The entire time I was playing I had felt hopeless and was growing more and more depressed to the point where I just started tuning out. I can understand why he did it. Mushrooms dont handle sunlight well. But since the game took place in a very open plain filled area with few trees I had asked him if I could drop my sunlight sensativity. He was cool with it but then out of the blue replaced it with something far worse on a whim. The odd part is the day prior my character had been working in the sun all day helping fortify a town with no issues.
You can play as a Myconid?

Real question is, are those vidoes posted somewhere else?
I came up with a concept for a Homebrew rule that relates to this, the winded condition. Basically you just exerted yourself wicked hard and wicked fast. You need a minute to catch your breath. Can be very literal, you actually just need a quick minute to breathe and just take 5. And maybe it’s like you get disadvantaged on like strength checks unless you’re in mortal danger (your bodies adrenaline will keep you going or get you going to save your ass). But it comes back right afterwards and maybe at like a degree harder. I don’t have everything worked out just yet, it’s a concept for a way to use short rests more. And to also buff frenzy because a level of exhaustion is a little hard. They are minor debuffs that can be gotten rid of by taking it easy or just not going nearly as hard. Respond with some ideas.
I really feel like this guy should do a series on pathfinder, he's have a blast with all the tons of deep mechanics and spells and other stuff
Told the party we were doing a more survival based run where food, ammo and importantly exhaustion would be a factor
1 of our party went crazy early on and thoroughly exhausting himself. (To his credit he was 1 roll short of escaping the magical quarantine zone the story was set in before it sealed people in.)
Then 3 sessions later we'd all got caught up everything and forgot that he was at 5 exhaustion. Role play heavy scenes meant the saves weren't coming up. So when the party managed to lock themselves into barracks storage room that was on fire failed saves caused exhaustion from asphyxiations.
Then our exhausted elf reminded us that he was already at 5 exhaustion. So in a zombie survival Champaign our 1st death was to smoke inhalation.

I love the idea of characters being able to "push beyond their physical limits" to use per day abilities multiple times at the cost of gaining an exhaustion point as soon as it ends.
For example, using four action surges as a 5th level fighter, in a single battle, then gaining three levels of exhaustion, and their next rest is gonna be soon, and a long rest regardless of what anyone else is doing.

There's a coming change in youtube policy. Part of it nails Channels targeted towards children but aren't marked for children.
UA-cam also implied that animation is for children.

Something also worth mentioning: The greater restoration spell can cure a level of Exhaustion but considering it costs 100 gold to cast it should be saved for the most dire of situations.
@Lance Clemings it's 100gp and a 5th level slot. Plus you have to know or prepare. More than enough of a pain in the ass for exhaustion.
@@elfvendeath Is that a problem?
Since levels of high exhaustion are deadly in... any situation where exhaustion is a common thing this is fairly useful like having healing spells for fighting. It isn't a pain unless exhaustion is uncommon in what you're doing.

@@darkblood626 what is Coppa?
@@Bizcaz A long story.
In short people were makeing some really wierd fetish videos with cartoon characters like Elsa. Then UA-cam got busted for data gathering on child users which is illegal.
UA-cam being UA-cam tried to deflect the backlash and threw out some new TOS rules which means animators on youtube have the choice between declaring their videos aimed at children and opting into rules that will cripple their channel by design, or risk a $40,000 fine per video if some idiot at youtube decides your videos are actually aimed at children.

We had a DM do something great with exhaustion as part of a trap.
We were in a dungeon/temple thing where we had to overcome challenges based on the 7 deadly sins in order to reach the prize at the end. For Sloth, we entered a cavern. A statue of what we'd later find out was Sloth stood in the center. Several statues of previous adventurers were scattered about the room, some collapsed while clawing at the walls, some curled up on the floor, and some half collapsed while attempting to run. There were a few spaces along the edge of the cavern, like small rooms, each containing things like supplies or a rest area or random junk. There were only two exits, the way we came in and a way out on the opposite side. This whole set up looked a little intimidating but we were game.
Then we had to roll initiative. We ready ourselves for combat but nothing leaps out at us. However, at the end of our turns we gain a rank of exhaustion. Okay, crud, that's bad. So we start spreading out to try and work this out. Some of us decide to try and destroy the sloth statue, some of us investigated the supplies, we all start coming up with theories; maybe we have to avoid resting, maybe we rest to regain the exhaustion, maybe there's an item we have to find? Then, just by chance, I glance down the map and notice something by the way out. Or rather something not by the way out.
"GM, is there a gate on the exit?"
"Nope."
"So there is literally nothing stopping us from leaving that way?"
"Nope. :) "
So we all run for the exit. You see the DM calculated it so that if a dwarf entered it could exit before becoming overcome by exhaustion as long as it started running straight away. We all book it, but unfortunately we spent a few turns buggering about and so can't quiet all reach the exit on our own. Luckily we have a monk, who through shenanigans with rope and a lot of elbow grease is able to save us all but one. The rogue tried to turned around and escape that way, only to meet a force field that stopped him from simply leaving the way we came, and so died from exhaustion far out of reach.
Hey Zee, did you get rid of some of your videos?
Yes. The new youtube rules happend.
I ran a game where the players were tracking down a kind of Demigod of despair. This creature left clues on tombstones and monuments or other sadness related artifacts. Just deciphering them caused despair, which I handled through the exhaustion mechanic. In this mini-campaign exhaustion levels rather than hit points were the main resource limitation.

You are a gentleman and a scholar good sir.
May I say, Zee, you are doing amazingly well at making these videos at the same high quality you usually do with so little time! I always love your vids, keep it ip
One of my favourite ways of causing exhaustion is with heavy/consistant rain. It's an environmental weather hazzard in Tomb of Annihilation that won't kill a character with exhaustion, but will handicap a character. It's particularly effective when used as part of a leadup to a dungeon and is a good way up the difficulty of the challenges within said dungeon without having to adjust the CR of the monsters or dungeon as a whole.
We are not worthy to be given 5 videos in 3 days of great and powerful Zee Bashew you have given untold wonders to us all thank you great sir
I actually find that diseases/curses that throw exhaustion along with other effects are a great way of raising stakes and throwing in a time limit to an objective. My party had to chase down a group of hags that were throwing curses around. First some of the party had to make a wisdom save or be beset by horrible nightmares and prevented from resting. A couple others found a spider in their sleeping bag that once bit gave them a magical effect similar to cackle fever. Toss in a difficult overland journey to even FIND the hags lair with skill checks involved and it ended up with the party coming to the dungeon already on their back foot with a couple of the party exhausted and needing to spend precious spell slots with a low level party to stave off some of the effects.
Congratulations on finishing your 5 Days of Animated Spellbooks Challenge! It's nice when UA-camrs go the extra mile, & I'd love something like this again.
But frankly, I might not be surprised (but I WOULD be disappointed) if you didn't upload for 5 MONTHS now.
Mad respect for pulling off 5 animations in 5 days, and more or less maintaining the usual level of quality, with cracks and shortcuts only starting to show in the last two installments.
Hopefully this doesn't backfire horribly.
It is also worth noting that the Dream Spell is excellent for causing exhaustion and is available to the players to use. It's a 6th Level spell that can send a message to someone via their dreams or turn their dream into a nightmare. Doing so deals 3d6 Psychic damage and stops them from benefiting from their long rest.
It doesn't work on Elves and creature's immune to sleep, and I DEFINITELY do not recommend casting it on a Beholder unless you want to create a whole new problem.
DM of mine is running a rogue like style game. You abort the run through the dungeon every time you can rest whenever but any rest short or long you make a con save of DC 10+ (hours in tower)/2 rounded down. On a fail gain a level of exhaustion. More intense reasources management than I have ever seen in level 10+ gameplay.
This was an **exhausting** video.
In all seriousness, this one of my favorite mechanics.
I love your viedos, Zee! It's impressive that quantity doesn't seem to affect quality in major ways.
