      They make me wish I knew Korean because they hit most of the boxes on my list of things I want in a guy right off the bat. The few they didn't hit require in person box checking but still omg how are there so many great guys but all are living so far away XD

    9:35 That man is an intellectual, "dressing gay" is not a thing and if it is it shouldn't be taken as an insult
    As all the comments say, I prefer a guy that knows that a man can take care of himself and still not be less man... than a boyfriend with toxic masculinity

      I think they worded it wrong, the stereotype I’ve heard is Asian men are effeminate which is different than gay. Probably a mistake in translation. Personally I’d say it’s just a difference in culture, different definitions of what’s masculine. I’d personally say Asian men have a tendency to look a little boyish by western standards of masculinity but not feminine.
      I think traditionally Asian women have done well by western standards of femininity but Asian men have not done nearly as well by western standards of masculinity, it’ll be interesting to see if this changes due to the increase in popularity of Korean media in the west.

    The only reason foreigners say Korean men "dress gay" is because most foreign men (from my experience) have zero fashion sense or lack of skincare routine EDIT: I’m from the South of England.

      American ideas about male fashion are just so narrow. Even continental European fashion has been portrayed as "gay". This has not really anything to do with being more fashionable. This has more to do with the korean society. In Korea there is this mindset that you have to be goodlooking in order to be successful in life, which is actually extremely toxic. Even young kids are pressured into that. That's also why plastic surgery is a big thing there and even some parents will pay for their high school kids plastic surgery so that kid will be more "beautiful" and successfull in life. As a women you shouldn't go in front of the door without putting on makeup which is insane to me. No one should be allowed to tell another person what to do with their body and what to look like.
      Yes, Koreans male and female tend to put more effort into their looks than other countries but it is what the korean society requires from them. It's often not really a choice but rather a necessity in order to fit in.

      This is sad, but true.
      I loved that everyone dressed so nicely, even the homeless people around the train stations. I wished my own country did the same - unfortunately its a cultural tradition to get dressed in the dark.
      But then there is the extreme end when it starts to turn into toxic Lookism. That part I didn't like about Korea. The pretty, handsome or cute people are favoured in every aspect by society as a whole, so the average joe has to work harder to compete and the uglies are unfortunately - sh%t out of luck.
      Many turn to surgery to either get ahead, or to just even out the playing field.
      Shallowness and lookism is in every country, including mine, its just amplified a bit more in Korea because the competition and expectation to succeed in life is massive.
      I had 8 convenient stores on my street all competing for the same customers, they all sold the same stuff so the only way they could compete was to up their level of customer service. Each one got more extreme in politeness and free service to outpace the other.
      Same with looks, if three people have the same degrees, qualifications and everything else is identical, then best looking would usually get picked for the job.
      Lucky I'm handsome and shmart.

      All young young generation Korean couples ( 20''s ~30's) prefer to divide their housekeeping-working part. Otherwise, it is considered to be getting closer to divorce. Everything that a husband doesn't housekeeping is an expression of an old generation and only plays in dramas that want to make a woman a role of victim. movie , drama is not reflection of reality

    I found it interesting that the fairer skin conversation ended with a discussion of clearer skin. I wonder if that's a common association there. I think the preference for blemish free, evenly toned skin is common for most people in all/most countries but, complexion doesn't really play a part in that.

      I think it is because it is fair skin tones gives a brighter look to the face, making it look healther. I think it also had to do with historical influences like you seemed richer when you had lighter skin, as you didn’t need to work in the fields underneath the sun.

I would even say that perhaps the perceived fragility adds to the attractiveness of fair skinned women. But, it doesn't really signal health. And it doesn't mean clear skin. I've seen pale women with really really bad skin.

      In Western countries, we have every right to make them gay, but if you put yourself in their position, in their country, they have every right to do what they do. In the competition in Korean society, where everyone looks good, everyone goes to college, everyone is smart and most of them have a good job, it's not enough just to have money and just be a nice guy. You have to have something else to put on the table.
      In a society where all the girls have a career, they have a thin body, they care about what they wear, they take care of their hair, what their face looks like, with the best products on the planet, where they always have plastic surgery to fix certain problems, they take care of them at beauty salons, obviously the competition between the guys will be higher..
      That is why that dominant man, 30 years ago, from the old Korean movies, who behaves exactly like any Western old man, alcoholic, fat and scandalous, has transformed into the man of today, who takes care of himself, who puts on make-up, who dress fashionable, etc. That just means capitalism, competition and the market. What you ask for versus what you have to offer..

      @lifewithluci1764 4 роки тому +45

      I think they used English just to make an easier comparison since English is a language that not only Americans speak, as they mention Canada, The UK, etc. what means that for an American is easier to marry a foreign from the neighboring countries since they share the same language, but for Koreans, they are surrounded by countries that do not share their same language. I think that's what they were trying to explain.

    • @Fruity-sb9lg

      @Ren sometimes its not just the language barrier but also the cultural differences.

    • @tkim2320
      @tkim2320 4 роки тому +10

      What I got from what he was saying was that in countries that speak English as a main language or even countries that integrate English in addition to their own language, there are more instances of people marrying people from other English speaking countries. So countries such as Korea or any other country in which there is a language that isn't shared with another country, it's more rare to see people marrying simply due to possible inability to communicate without some effort. They weren't saying that Koreans don't marry foreigners because they speak English, thus a language barrier. Just easier for a larger percentage of the population to marry foreigners if they both come from countries that speak the same language such as English.

      Fairer skin equating to beauty in Korea is actually not race based as many presume who are from outside of Korea as they are so used to it being the case in their own country. People wanting to seen more white. Instead, as Korea and Japan are the only two Asian countries that were never colonized by Europeans, it's a classist beauty ideal. Fairer skin generally meant you were wealthy and didn't have to work out in the sun. Koreans can actually get fairly dark in the skin tones but they just aren't seen much in media unless they are dark from tanning. I'd say he was on the light tan side on the Korean scale from (naturally) white as a ghost to darker than a tan would look. Of course the natural extremes are rarer than the middle fair to slightly tan looking skin shades.

    From what I see they are excusing themselves about not marrying foreigners because of the barrier language, but I believe that's not the problem.
    Obviously when you think of marrying someone you must have had a long relationship with them and been able to talk and know about each other. As well, when foreigners go to live to Korea for a long period of time, I believe that at some point they learn the language or also there are people who have studied korean and they know how to speak it perfectly. I think that there is another excuse more realistic about why they don't marry foreigners, maybe it's because the traditions or maybe because their parents or maybe because they don't take foreigners seriously. In addition, I would like to mention that foreigners aren't only Americans or Brits, there are plenty more people from other countries in the world such as Spanish, French, Italian, German, Swedish, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipinos, Moroccan...

      Emily B There arent that many foreigners in korea that speak korean...
      foreigners from developing countries (philippines, uzbek, etc) are usually workers and they dont have the time to learn.
      Foreigners from the west (us, brit, french etc) never really make the effort. They want koreans to speak their language in korea and many still have a huugeee superiority complex over asians in general.

    • @PieceMeals
      @PieceMeals 4 роки тому

      The interest in Korean guys from Western girls has really peaked because of Kpop. I think there is more of a problem with Westerners feeling entitled to attention and attraction from Korean guys and getting upset when they seem to really only want to date Koreans, which the majority seem to. Korea is not a melting pot like most Western countries so they are more likely to stick to what they know and expectations. However, it is very disrespectful to Koreans and Korean women to think that Korean men only don't date foreigners because of societal and parental pressure. Some people just prefer to date interculturally and not out. Some Westerners think there attitudes towards marriage and dating need to change just because they are attracted to Korean men all of a sudden.

    • @emilyb3126
      @emilyb3126 4 роки тому +1

      @@wonseokchoi4203 Well I can't assure if there is many or not foreigners in Korea because I never have been there. But I believe that making the statement that all people from the west don't make any effort is being quite biased from koreaboos and people who thinks they are superior. I am not going to deny the fact that there is people who act and think that way because is the truth and they exist. But because some people act that way and they stand out more it doesn't mean that everyone is like that. I'm pretty sure there are foreign men and women in Korea who speak the language and live a normal life.

    • @emilyb3126
      @emilyb3126 4 роки тому +2

      @@PieceMeals I really agree with your opinion and I also believe that a lot of Western girls and guys have a crush on Koreans just because of the image that K-pop has brought to the west. But I also must say that not everyone is in the same bag, there's also people who aren't obsessed with Koreans and K-pop or any other influential stuff and they just want to date someone they met and like. In addition from what you mentioned about not being respectful to Koreans I must disagree. When Koreans don't want to date foreigners since the beginning because they don't want I completely understand and I don't see any problems at all. The problem starts when Koreans start dating someone who's foreigner and when the things get serious they backup with excuses like the cultural difference, language, parents approval, society pressure and many other things. That's just a lack of compromising within the relationship. In that situation I believe that some Koreans, not all of them as I said before that not everyone is in the same bag, are also just interested in dating foreigners because what they see in the movies and as well because they find them something exotic, new and a trophy to show it off. In conclusion I think every country cas it's cons and pros, not all westerns are good or bad and not all Koreans are good or bad.

    I've asked my male Korean friends and they all said that they would like to experience having a foreign girlfriend BUT they all also hesitated when asked if they'd marry one. The most common reason is their parents wouldn't approve of a foreign daughter-in-law. On the other hand, my female Korean friends very much welcome the idea of having a foreign boyfriend or husband, and even their parents wouldn't disapprove of a non-Korean son-in-law. It seems parents' approval have a heavy influence on them. I don't know the reasons but I'm guessing it could be because usually sons often still take care of their parents in their old-age and even live together and if they have a foreign wife then the elders would have to worry about cultural and language differences with their daughter-in-law. whilst daughters often move into the family of their husband so they have no problem and they even get excited about having cute mixed-race grandchildren. maybe this show can have elderly Koreans as guests to get some insights.
