Yeah, the Beatles were famous for that. Well, they were famous for a lot of reasons, of course, but their chords--they have been driving me crazy for almost 60 years, trying to figure out their odd little deviations. They did it all the time. Probably one of the million things that made them different from everybody else.
"non-conventional chord shapes"? Relax, there are none of those daunting things. Use a capo at the 4th fret - as Mr. Lennon did. A good songwriter does not necessarily need to be Mozart incarnate. You will not be sent to guitar hell, nor will you be any less hip. Find a teacher who will teach how to read conventional staff and theory. This teacher will have likely had university training. That way, you can technically be ahead of John Lennon without having to live through two years in Hamburg. When you're 18 it's fun At xx years, it would probably be a poor health decision. Plus, your wife might divorce you. -Cheers.
Yes! Love it! Thanks Doug. One of the greatest Beatles songs. John seems to have been fond of the arpegio style of playing on Abbey Road. Because, Sun King and possibly the next song you'll be tackling (hopefully) I Want You (She's So Heavy) all incorporate arpeggios.
I think after his India trip where he learnt fingerpicking from Donovan a lot of his white album songs and abbey road songs were arpeggios. Dear Prudence, Julia, Happiness is a Warm Gun and as you mentioned several Abbey Road songs, including Octopus Garden.
Holy CATS! What an undertaking - and what kind of mad genius writes a guitar arrangement like that??? Oh, right, John did 😀 The kind of thing where even with the heavy lifting all done and laid out for you, you know it's still gonna take you a solid couple months to get close. Thanks!
yep, I lived in W Seattle for many years. even years before they opened up in their other location there. My old house was super close to their current location.
If Lennon and McCartney had never met, John would have been a Sid Vicious and Paul would have been a Barry Manilow. The stars aligned and the world changed.
@Nobody_Important_Yea ...and since the different lineup would mean the breakup probably never happened, The Beatles would again play live, where Paul McManilow would cut his bare chest w/broken glass, then audience-surf while spreading peanut butter all over himself...
I always learn so much from these videos. The first thing I learned on this one was that John played the lead! Never thought as much, since it's such a departure from his signature slashing, rhythmic style. Also, Harrison's "dissonant chord" is also used in the break of "I Want You ...", before the "she's so heavy" choruses ...
superb, as usual. what's particularly interesting is the points where the guitar diverges from the harpsichord and/or synth. I can't hear that on the record because (!) the layering is so lush and full. as an aside, in Beatles lore, John brought the song in and George Martin played either the harpsichord and/or synth parts. and George, an accomplished musician with great facility and a tremendous ear, had more trouble with the arpeggiation than John did. not to diss George, who's beyond great - but just to note how amazing John Lennon's guitar playing was.
Although this is an excellent video, I’ve learned how to play it with a capo on the fourth fret playing very similar notes, which I believe are probably the harpsichord notes. After listening to the isolated guitar part here and comparing to the finished product with the harpsichord I prefer the latter. It’s also easier to play. Thanks, though
Thanks!!! Also, You gotta do, HIGHWAY STAR - DEEP PURPLE, with the Harmonized PARTS; consider, doing it with a Boss Harmonist and Showing, the actual 2-Guitar PARTS. That'd be the Funnest Way, but many of Us are doing a solo Loop Performance thing..., If you Feel inspired. I think can do it. You've got a GOOD EAR!!
It was shortly after these Abbey Road sessions where Lennon would dip his Epi Casino in the Amazon River, so piranha could strip off all the white paint....true story..
yeah i tried it that way too, and you'd have to tune the E string down a step to make that work, it all seemed too complicated to make it all work that way when you play the A major chord to then fret that A note on the 6th string - but if thats what he did hats off to him.
and arpeggiating the F# chord also becomes difficult if sixth string tuned down. Comparing this lesson to the isolated instrumental version it all sounds spot on - nice work Doug!
Fortunately, it’s separated into chapters so you skip to wherever you want so you can enjoy this great lesson that somebody took considerable time to put together and kindly offer it for free.
@@StuffnSuchtruly. Back in my day you had to lift the needle on the record and drop a couple grooves back repeatedly to figure out a tune or part. Or if you were lucky (and could afford it) you had a teacher who you’d see maybe once a week. You couldn’t just search for a FREE lesson on UA-cam. (And then complain it’s not to your liking.)
We want just the TRUE voicing & fingering used on the disc. We don't care about your exactly-the-same-guitar, "chain", slap effects, -etc. John Lennon was NOT Andre Segovia. He would have used a capo at the 4th fret and played in nominal Am. Sheesh.
Had no idea there were so many non-conventional chord shapes in this beautiful song. The backup vocals are heavenly. Thanks

Amazing job Doug!
Outstanding work as always Doug.
I was waiting for you to sing all the harmonies at once! ;-)

Yes been wanting to learn this one. Thank you so much. Such a gorgeous piece.
Nice work on this - i had it wrong in the same 3 spots you orginally did! Very cool - Thank you!
At last! The Most accurate vidéo about this song !Finally ...😊😊😊
Amazing! Great Lesson. Thanks a lot
It's a guitar tutorial that feels like a talk show

it's actually a really nice etude for the (transferable) skills needed
Excellent!
Bravo.
Can you demonstrate the guitar part from I Want You/She's So Heavy?
😁

@@12footchain I think you’re right, those open strings make more sense without capo!

How may I get transcriptions? Thank you.
Transcription like tabs? You can join my patreon.com/12footchain and get access to my full library of those
Funny you picked this song. You look like Julianne Lennon. Nice job on lessons.
How about bolivian ragamuffin from Aerosmith?
Ta guitare à un son très étrange 😮

It's a Dave Clark 5 song not the beatles

Ok man, chill out. Nobody is claiming he's Segovia. But people also underestimate his guitar skills too.
The Music Gods were clearly in a GREAT Mood the day they gave us The Beatles !!!
😀 Us mere mortals are forever grateful !!!
Shorten your intro. Too much talk
Or, you could just move on and figure it out on your own. And maybe learn some manners.
