The Max Wedge Chrysler engines had notches in the top of the bores to make the valves work, so don't let anyone tell you it can't be done.. I used an old valve cut down to the required size with slits cut in the side in a drill press to do the job once. WIth your oil, try using Penrite Universal Farm Oil for the run-in , it has more Zinc than any of the expensive engine oils, even that $50 a litre castrol synthetic stuff they use in supercars, I use it in all my classic 4 stroke machinery.

All 351 4v's have notched top bores to clear the inlet valve too

I used the 202 Engines to learn on. I had a much lower budget, but that didn't stop my HJ Premier with a 202, M20 and 3.08:1 10bolt Salisbury from having the power to weight of a stock unmodified Vu VX 5.7L Ls1 or a Falcon 351 GTHO.

Hi mate when you valve relief the cyl only go as deep as leaving half a millimetre above the first ring also best to use bearing blue under the valve to see how much to take of instead of the gasket guide.

Remember….its more about “when” that 486thou lift happens relative to the piston movement. Clearly if it hits the deck…then no choice but to clearance it. Ps. Literally just saw the section where ya scoped it, so….🤷🏻‍♂️🤔

GOOGLE..then, buy a decent engine.holdens weere stuck in the 50,s. if you polish sht, put a holden badge on it, holden people will buy it..ie,,cruze..holdens shot themselves in the foot by selling sht for too long. last 3 commodores produced were the best, but. the LS,is not a good engine, cam/ lifter problems. best engine still, in aus.. 351c..

pretty sure 173 is 3.5" bore and 186/202 is 3.625", limiting factor for both is the soft iron alloy the blocks are made from

if,,you google 173, it says bin..these engines been around for what, 50 yrs, im sure an engine builder knows, a real engine builder, knows how big a valve you can fit. better off with a longer duration cam. or, buy a decent engine.you cant releave the bore..did you thread the rocker posts. only thing you need to do to a holden 6, besides bin.. is fit the smaller head. bit hard on a 173.. i had a 186s, with a 173 head. very fast.. same as fitting 302 heads to a 351. cheap power. id be ringing hsd, for my money back, then give a good spill on f/book.. why would you play with a 202. just bight the bullitt, only build 186,s. best thing about holdens,,is the 9'' diff..ford..

That maybe so, but they're One of the Easiest Engines to work on, learn on. But alot of tricks required to make them paint the road black in at least the first 3 gears with the Aussie 4speed behind it.

Doesn't mean you can't generate good power from them. And if you don't go too high a state of tune, they're VERY reliable and have no overheating problems on hot days.

Rubbish engines that are still winning races now. When you have another 6 as fast comment, otherwise shutup!!
