My buddy Eddie passed away December 15 this year when we went in for a x ray and the doctor said it was a degenerative bone disease and the only thing keeping his teeth in his mouth were his soft tissues and his bones in his face were mush. Eddie was an awesome dog he had lots of energy and loved to cause mischief he was one of my best friends and it has been rough without him the house just is not the same. He was a big part of the family and I really miss him, he was only 8 years old and I just wish there was something we could have done.
Thank you for this video. My 10 1/2 Rottweiler has it. 😢 So far so good with medication. I hope he makes it to 11 with no pain. His birthday is on 4/26 ❤
Back in May we notice our dog was limping, took him to the vets and said it was Arthritis so they gave us the medication..All was ok.Than back to the vets in June, July same medication but didn't work..Than notice his paw was swollen, and he was diagnosed with Bone cancer..His quality of life wasn't good, so made a decision to to put him to sleep 😢..He was nearly 12 years old.. R.I.P Shadow. Till we meet again in heaven ❤
Unfortunately, my 12yo basset hound got osteosarcoma on her left back leg. She’s only 18kg. The vet told us it’s a quite rare type of osteosarcoma, mainly for her breed. My heart is shattered. Her oncologist vet explained to us exactly the same things you said in this vídeo. Thank you so much for the explanations.
My dog got it two weeks ago. My rottweiler is 10 year old (really ancient for a rottweiler). The vet does not want to cut the leg because the dog would not survive. Difficult times but we don't Daisy to suffer.
I lost my rottie today 9 years old ....had it in the rear leg and went for months with no probs until this week he couldn’t get up and the pain was really bad ....found myself here tryn to understand why .....my hearts broke I hope yr rottie stays with you for a while mate send him my love
I look after the dog of my best friend. She was out playing with the dog week ago. Suddenly the dog screamed and could not stand up. The vet saw on the x-ray that she had 2 broken bones in her right hind leg and a growth that they highly suspect to be bone cancer. The dog needed amputation the same day. It broke my friends heart because she already has a really hard time atm and needed to go in a clinic for treatment herself a few days later. She felt like she let her dog down but it was 100% necessary she did go NOW. So i look after the dog for her and update her. We wait for the results if it is really cancer, should come in any day now. The good thing is the dog does very good with 3 legs. She walks as if she always only had 3 and the wound heals perfect without problems. This video really helped me to get a good base understanding of what the diagnose would/will mean. Thank you very much for this! Great work❤🐾 Greetings from switzerland
Our Rottie/Basset mix was just diagnosed. Its in the rear femur. You can see low bone density (mothing). I was told by my vet and the oncologist that once bone shows obvious signs of cancer, it is 98% likely that it has spread microscopically to the lungs or other areas. I was told even if there are no signs via x-ray of spread, amputation and chemo would only extend the life 6-8 months. And they would not be happy months for our doggo. I understand the need to practice medicine and discover advanced treatments...but I don't understand the advice from so many vets to spend 10K + on surgery and chemo just to extend the life of the dog 6-8 uncomfortable/painful months. Tough decisions.
I lost my. beautiful greyhound Violet at Christmas, diagnosed Chrissy eve and I had to put her to sleep on 8th Jan, so brutal to watch her in so much pain and she was so brave and declined so rapidly, my heart is broken that I couldn't help her with the pain
My 10 1/2 year old Rottweiler was just diagnosed on 10/10/23. Our vet told us he didn’t recommend amputating and chemotherapy for the same reason you stated. We have him on steroids and eventually he will need pain medication until he lets us know it’s time. 😢
My boy Hercules just got diagnosed with this today, He's a Great Pyrenees, a fantastic dog in all respects. We're going to have him put down as soon as our kids, who were raised with him, can get home to say goodbye. The worst thing about a pet is that we outlive them by a lot.
What is causing this increase in osteo-sarcoma? My 9 yr old large standard poodle was diagnosed this May1st. At first we thought that she had sprained her front ankle/discus. I was shocked to et the cancer diagnosis. Initially, we did radiation therapy and pain killers, but two days ago finally had her front leg amputated. by a board certified surgeon. So far we've spent $7,500 - no chemotherapy yet. . I wish I had gone straight to surury when first detected early May, but I needed time to adjust to such a change. She was lovely to watch when she would run, and loosing her leg was hard to accept.. Her treatment has been through our Vet and State University Vet Oncology Hospital (NC State), and a board certified Surgeon.
My almost 10 year old boy 'Turbo' has a palm size mass in his ankle...he has been limping which has been increasing.I have been giving him Rimadyl which doesn't stop the limping but gives him a little more comfort. I have an appointment Jan 5th for an xray...if it's positive we plan , sadly, to put him down as he is not a candidate for amputation...he weighs about 185lbs. MY heart is broken already!
Waiting on the results of my 16 year old dog’s biopsy. We are praying it’s the soft tissue sarcoma recurring and not an osteosarcoma, solely so he isn’t in excessive pain. It would be the better of two evils 😢. It’s absolutely devastating.
@@ladygrimm6138 Hey, so the results of the biopsy were not fully conclusive but they didn’t find any evidence of osteosarcoma so it seems to just be a recurrence of the previous soft tissue sarcoma that was removed from that site around 18 months ago. The lump on his front leg is growing quite rapidly and he is on several types of pain killers but he’s still very happy, running around, great appetite, loves his walks and playing with his tennis ball. For a 16 year old dog with recurrent cancer, he’s still a little bundle of happiness. I’m so sorry to hear about your dog, I really hope they are ok and you are managing to cope with the news. It’s awful to find out but always just do what is best for them.
@@seandonohue6793 he didn’t receive a biopsy they just seemed very confident that it is osteosarcoma. Either way I’m going to get a consult with an oncologist Monday I’m just not sure if I’m being selfish. Can’t help but want to help him continue on if I can but if doing so would be painful and difficult I obviously won’t do that.
Thank you for the information. My 8 year old Springer Spaniel, Daisy, has a hard swelling below her rear right ankle. She has had X rays, FNA and a biopsy. The vet suspects osteosarcoma (some 'moth eaten' bone is apparent). The X rays show no detectable metastases. The FNA came up negative for sarcoma, although I know these can be false negatives. We are now waiting for the biopsy results. I feel slightly frustrated as from the information I have heard and see it seems prompt surgery is important, yet this process is taking weeks from the initial X rays. Should I be doing anything different? I'm in the UK.
My sweet under 2 year old German Wire haired Pointer has been limping for a little while so I had my vet X-ray today. That is why I’m here watching this video. She is 62lbs and so young. We are getting a CT done to see where we’re at...thank you for your frankness on this difficult subject😞 PS. Your playlist link you mentioned is not hot anymore. Please take a look so I can listen to those as well. Thank you again.
@@morecringe89 my vet first thought it was bone cancer EVERYWHERE! Second opinion (and someone who was familiar with sporting dogs) found that this was typical for the sporting class of dog. She is doing much much better but sometimes the limp comes back...she is hard to keep still but is doing great! Glad it wasn’t cancer but glad to have videos like this to help educate me if it had been.
My ❤️ Trinity had lower Jaw Bone cancer mainly on the left side. We did NOT put her thru jaw removal surgery or chemo. We did palliative care managing her pain. She was about 10 yrs old when diagnosed. She lived for 16 months thereafter. She began having more pain and eating less and less. Then she began to experience limb lameness in her back legs and had labored nasal breathing. At that point I made the detrimental decision that continues to haunt me. It's been a few days. I'm so unsure how to be with her in heaven. Feeling so stressed, lost and alone. Hope this information helps anyone else going thru this process. May peace be with you all. ✝️

I feel for you!!! Our Rottie, only 6 years old was diagnosed yesterday. His tumor is right between his eyes from his skull... nothing we can do, but keep him comfortable.
@@wildnkarafree So sorry, radiation or palliative radiation may be helpful, and zoledronate can be helpful for bone pain. Please check out the treatment video. xo ua-cam.com/video/hdlVxXMa7FQ/v-deo.html
@@DrSueCancerVet thank you!!! so appreciative of your response I will look into these recommendations. The tumor came on over night literally... but we wondered over the last year, as we saw him wanting to sleep the days away in the darkest coolest places in our house. When the tumor appeared last week, It was like a marble, turned into a golf ball in one week.... My brother died of this... and he had tumors removed from his spine... it's really a curse... If my sweet giant fur baby knows that I love him and I can keep him from severe pain... that's what I will do, love him and help him with the pain.... I am grateful that DR's like yourself make educational videos. help us and guide us to do the best for our loved pets.
Thank you. My 12 year old (100 lbs) has a mineralizing growth on the crest of his skull between his ears. It is growing at a very fast rate. We had it aspirated and x rays done. The patho labs came back with cells suggested to be osteosarcoma... the growth is on top of the skull and is bone like. It’s not growing towards the brain... the xrays also detected a large mass on top of his heart (that is enlarged) and the radiologist thinks it is most likely right side heart failure? But they aren’t sure if it’s the heart with the mass or the top portion of the lungs... but the two (heart mass and head bump) could be isolated. Due to Buddy being 12, and has both masses... the vets personal opinion (I asked for it) is to keep him comfortable and ask for pain meds if needed. We will do monthly phone calls. Life expectancy is 4-6 months. I’m afraid to do chemo because I don’t want him to suffer that at his age. He’s happy. Loving. And not aware of anything. There isn’t swelling (like the leg joints) but just a large growing mass on his head that feels attached and hard as bone. Would you agree (as a specialist and animal lover) that 12 years old with two masses (heart and head) the best treatment is no treatment? Thank you...
Sounds similar to my 10.5 year old :( :( We are still in the process of determining the complete diagnosis. Vet was unable to aspirate due to its hardness(?) and the tumor will be biopsied hopefully in a few weeks (a huge backlog with the oncology specialists where I live).Chest xrays next week with the original vet - will see if any metastasis in that area . Blood work good. Lots of awful decisions to be made in the upcoming weeks. Like your boy, ours is not showing any sign of pain and is eating great and has lots of energy - so far. Hoping your Buddy is doing as well as possible. Did you decide on no treatment?
I have a Cane Corso 10yrs old, she's been limping around and we brought her to the Veterinarian, they said she might have bone cancer but they have to run more tests, she has no swelling just a limp. Once she's moving it seems like it gets better. My family and I are freaking out waiting for results. Any suggestions? Thank you
How early should the diagnosis be in order to save the animal? At what point is it too late to save the dog? Our dog has osteosarcoma in front knees and was misdiagnosed for several months with arthritis. We have been told that it's likely spread but no ct scan beside the knees was done. The vet said it's too late
My vet told us today My standard goldendoodle probably has cancer in his right wrist and she sent xrays to specialist but she said that xrays specialist is gonna recommends a biopsy to make surebits cancer. Options are to amputate and dog will live a little over a year
Just found iut our dog has this cancer in is lower back mandible. What would be the expected surgery for that? Realistically whats the expected life span for this location?
My 9 uear old standard goldendodle started limping out of nowhere from front rigjt wrist/paw. Took him to vet this past sunday and did x rays. Vet was almost 100% sure it was bone cancer by looking at xrays. They did a biopsy on sunday too and they called me Wednesday with results. They said he has no cancer, and that has a benign tumor in his wrist. I have another appointment this Monday for a check up. Right now he is on mess for 10 days and he is doing fine bit still limping a little bit. Will they do surgery to remove it cause obviously it's causing him discomfort. There is no need for amputation right??
Our dog was diagnosed with this cancer in her spine. I cannot find any information about this as most topics are about amputation which is not a possibility in this case. As she is already losing control over her legs we will have to put her asleep soon. If any other ideas and experience let me know..
Just come across your videos - they are great and so informative in an upbeat way :) I have to wait 2 weeks for a video call with the oncologist regarding what looks to possibly be bone /skull cancer so was wondering if you have any information regarding skull/bone cancer? My 10 year old GSD has a very significant hard firm lump between the top of his right ear and middle/top of his head. Ultrasound done and it showed it could not be aspirated. Waiting for blood results still. I am going to ask the veterinarian if they could do chest xrays in the meantime while waiting for oncology specialist. Any information or suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
My thirteen-year-old boxer pitbull had an x-ray and they say it's cancer on her rear leg upper she acts really well though the doctor told me he thought he'd see me in 2 months to put her down and it's been almost double that the leg is really big but she's still smiling and she'll swim in the lake every day going up and down hills to get there but she just doesn't act like cancers killing her it's the leg that's just blown up. Is there any other non malignant tumor that could be in there and could I remove her leg without radiation
My dog was showing signs that me and my family didn’t know about for about a month and a half and the doctors missed it and now we are too the point where we got a test and they said it didn’t spread but we are having trouble deciding to either take of the leg or put him down because he is in so much pain any recommendations
We couldn't do that to our rottie because she was such a proud girl. All that pain to extend her 3 to 8 months wasn't worth it to her. Hardest decision we have had to make. We actually redesigned our house when she was one. She was definitely family.
Would you recommend chemotherapy for a dog with chondrosarcoma? He have his leg amputated results of histopathology are most likely chondrosarcoma with small chance of chondroblasto osteosarcoma, unfortunately they are not able to see a grade of the tumor that's why they recommended carboplatin 4 sessions. Thank you very much for answer! I love your vlog!
The survival chart you posted. Is it a 5% survival rate for 1 year only surgery and about 13% survival rate for 1 year with surgery & chemotherapy? What is the survival rate of continuing live after 1 years old? What is the approximate time frame you have left with a dog diagnosed with bone cancer without treatment?
Dear Dr. Sue, very informative video. Our dog a half german Sheppard who is 13, we just amputated her front right leg due to this. So far no signs of metastasis or just too early to tell. We will start chemo but what are the chances to have another lef affected? We really dont want to keep amputating legs

I have an 11-year-old St. Bernard that was just recently diagnosed with us in her front leg. She already has arthritis setting in her hind legs would amputation be beneficial to her or would it be harder for her?
Chemotherapy varies based on dog size (as larger dogs get more chemo), and the cost of surgery can also vary depending on the part of the country. Please ask your veterinarian/surgeon/oncologist so you can get an accurate estimate.

My dog Ace's lameness progressed this year. Recently I noticed his hind leg is bending inward, though he can still climb up the stairs very slowly. The vet said it's arthritis. Im still worried it's bone cancer. I lost my first dog to cancer and i still grieve over her. I don't know how old Ace is. I found him outside my apartment in October 2017. He was abandoned. I noticed he was limping a little. I fed him every night. It took him 3 months to trust a human. He decided on his own live with me. I got kick out of the apartment because of him.

My 10 1/2 year old Rottweiler was just diagnosed on 10/10/23. Our vet told us he didn’t recommend amputating and chemotherapy for the same reason you stated. We have him on steroids and eventually he will need pain medication until he lets us know it’s time. 😢
Thank you for these videos. We're dealing with distal Osteo on our 9 year old Great Pyrenees.
My boy Hercules just got diagnosed with this today, He's a Great Pyrenees, a fantastic dog in all respects. We're going to have him put down as soon as our kids, who were raised with him, can get home to say goodbye. The worst thing about a pet is that we outlive them by a lot.
Great video. Lots of good information. Looking forward to part 2!
Thank you!! I appreciate the feedback! #KickCancersButt
Is she still alive?
How's your baby? Is she still happy:(
You're awesome, thank you for all you do 💯
Thank you so much for the positive feedback! ❤️
Hello. Would you mind sharing an update? My boy is 16 also and we just found out he has this too.
Thank you so much for what you do.
You are so welcome! 💙
My sweet under 2 year old German Wire haired Pointer has been limping for a little while so I had my vet X-ray today. That is why I’m here watching this video. She is 62lbs and so young. We are getting a CT done to see where we’re at...thank you for your frankness on this difficult subject😞
PS. Your playlist link you mentioned is not hot anymore. Please take a look so I can listen to those as well. Thank you again.
What happened to your baby. Did they give you any answers?
@@morecringe89 my vet first thought it was bone cancer EVERYWHERE! Second opinion (and someone who was familiar with sporting dogs) found that this was typical for the sporting class of dog. She is doing much much better but sometimes the limp comes back...she is hard to keep still but is doing great! Glad it wasn’t cancer but glad to have videos like this to help educate me if it had been.
@@Weartracy hey I have a boxer and he is also 2years and even he is limping, going to get his tests done in 3days ur comment is giving me some hope.
You made the best decision for her and the most human. Don't feel bad, she is in the best place now and you're not alone.
Thank you for your response. Means more than you'll ever know during moments much needed@@wikingfaust
@kimjane322 I've been there too once and also at the moment I'm in a similar, very difficult situation. Their souls are bond with ours and we will reunite when we finish the school of life. Meanwhile we honour the love they taught us.
@@wikingfaust Yes, very well said; The School of Life. The love and bond we are gifted with during their presence is so hard to let go of and also to accept their transitioning. Actually, today I found a great picture of my Trinity that will be placed on my "pet wall" to help me heal and also keep her life memories alive as time goes on and seasons change. Sadly, I understand you are going thru some difficult times as well, I am so sorry.. You will be okay though when it comes. Be patient, give yourself time to cope, process and accept. Love and enjoy your special baby to your fullest content and don't give up hope. What is the high level of alkaline phosphate indicative of?
I wanted to know about bone cancer in dogs because about a year ago my dog had passed away because of this cancer.
Can you elaborate on bone cancer of the hock? You’re the first vet I’ve come across to mention it as a common site for osteosarcoma 🤔
This was really helpful, thank you. I just found out my St. Bernard has this and I am devastated.
So sorry about your dog but I am so happy this is helpful. Please check out pert 2 and the amputation video. Plus my chemo playlist. #KickCancersButt

Thank you
I have a hound that's limping on his front leg, yet no noticeable swelling.
Any update?
How early should the diagnosis be in order to save the animal? At what point is it too late to save the dog? Our dog has osteosarcoma in front knees and was misdiagnosed for several months with arthritis. We have been told that it's likely spread but no ct scan beside the knees was done. The vet said it's too late
My vet told us today My standard goldendoodle probably has cancer in his right wrist and she sent xrays to specialist but she said that xrays specialist is gonna recommends a biopsy to make surebits cancer. Options are to amputate and dog will live a little over a year
Your very informative ty
How much is that surgery to remove front limb? Also can we kill the cancer before amputation?
Would be so nice if Dr answered these comment questions. Thanks.
Just recently found out that my dog has it, do you know of any clinical trials or ways to help with the cost?
Thank you for all your videos
Just come across your videos - they are great and so informative in an upbeat way :)
I have to wait 2 weeks for a video call with the oncologist regarding what looks to possibly be bone /skull cancer so was wondering if you have any information regarding skull/bone cancer?

If take the leg will fix then do so! If it didn't spread! Your dog can do it!
Thank you so much. I can make informed decisions now. My partner is a mess : (

What is a price range for the surgery and chemotherapy?
Chemotherapy varies based on dog size (as larger dogs get more chemo), and the cost of surgery can also vary depending on the part of the country. Please ask your veterinarian/surgeon/oncologist so you can get an accurate estimate.
According to the specialist that saw my German Shepherd. Chemotherapy and anppotation will only give the pet 6 to 8 months to live.

I couldn't take him to a vet. I was not in good position financially.
