It isn't just his naivety that makes him an idiot, but his lack of foresight of his actions, Philip thinks too much on the positives that he is blind to the negatives, When he stole the supplies, he just thought that he would be seen as a hero, make money, and the Re-Estize King would let him marry Albedo as a reward (like how did he think the king has that authority to marry him with someone outside their country?). And, of course, he didn't think that the Sorcerer Kingdom wouldn't retaliate and bring hell onto the kingdom. Can't wait to see him get his comeuppance animated.
This hits the nail on the head. What makes an idiot is making stupid decisions considering the knowledge at his disposal. This is very clearly shown on how he convinces himself that he has a good chance at getting with Albedo; he breaks down the Sorcerer Kingdom in his head until he can be considered roughly equal in status to what he's been told is equivalent to a Prime Minister, and then acts on that as if it's now reality. Hilma - who should have been a trusted advisor from his perspective, both the one funding his party and clearly someone who is more knowledgeable about noble society and did most of the leg work for his party - directly tells him in no uncertain terms that courting Albedo won't happen. He brushes her off though because he's already convinced himself that not only is it possible, it's actually turning up somewhat likely. He only thinks things through with the purpose of distorting his perception of reality to work for him, and then expects reality to just follow suit.
I think he just doesn't know who Ainz and Albedo really are. Nazarick is a new kingdom that randomly sprouted from nowhere and the inhabitants have never been heard of until they won that major battle. Even then most of the inhabitants of the empire and theocracy believe ainz is another pretender who got lucky and that they are just another group of monster kind trying to take power. Philip is still under the same notion because he has never seen ainz and his minions in action. If Albedo wasn't following Ainzs instructions, she would have incinerated Philip and the rest of the party as soon as he spoke to her. Remember the guardians aren't being courteous because they want to, they are like that because they would rather pretend than not follow orders expect for Pandoras actor. Heck, most of them, including Demiurge and Albedo, who are by no means dumb or anything delude themselves into seeing things that aren't there as if Ainz saw 10 steps ahead... And then there's Pandora who thinks outside the box. He will follow Ainz orders, yes. But he stops to ask "Why?", "For what reason?", "Is this really the best course of action?", etc. More still... If he feels that changing the plan on the go will result in a better outcome, he will do it regardless of how the other Guardians react... And crazy part? He's actually right all the time (again, if I'm not recalling correctly please let me know) since unlike the others who, to be honest, believe they understand Ainz, Pandora actually does to a degree.
But the point is: a really stupid person wouldn't have the imagination and creativity to have such ideas and put them into practice. Philip did have creativity and imagination, he got power - but he had neither control nor wisdom nor experience nor context nor an awareness of the possible consequences - consequences, to him, were likely a few disappointed words and then his parents or servants would fix the situation because he was the son of a baron who rules a single village where he could do whatever he pleased - and the most that could happen was that his parents would be disappointed. Hit a stronger kid? Well, he's the lord's son so the other kid couldn't hit back. Ruined some tools or destroyed a flower bed? Well, his parents could easily fix that, too. He was going to be a farmer, a wealthy one that wouldn't plow the fields himself, but still a farmer. Why would you teach son number 3 politics when he was going to be a farmer? That effort would have been useless to a farmer. He didn't even get that he was just supposed to greet the count his family was serving - the man who can take away the one village barony his father ruled. That's how he managed to cause so much chaos. Too much imagination, no awareness of anything.

He's not just a regular moron. He's the product of the greatest minds of a generation working together with the express purpose of building the dumbest moron who ever lived. -GLADOS describing -Wheatley- Phillip.
I feel I need to make a correction. It was not Shalltear who realized that Phillip was just an idiot, it was Ainz. This is important because Ainz saying it was what made Albedo and Demiurge immediately realize it was true, as they could easily dismiss anything Shalltear says as coming from being unable to comprehend the deeper plans going on, but if Ainz says it, then it must be true, not matter what evidence there is that says it's wrong (Remember, Ainz could tell them that the color green is red and they'd immediately decide that he's correct and refer to the color green as red from then on. On the truly extreme side, he could tell one of the maids of Nazarick that she was in love with someone and she'd accept that she was in love with that person, because Ainz told her she was).
Also note that Ainz is nowhere near as smart as some of the Floor Guardians, he's still a normal salaryman guy in a video game character's body. It would had been made sense for him to think like that given he used to work for customer service back then, he could had been saw a lot of that type of people before.
Philip is a big factor in the intelligence vs wisdom argument. He’s not dumb, but he has NO context for any of the information he’s gotten. Im sure Ainz is gonna teach him soon
ya for instance his initial idea of making relations with the sorcerer kingdom is not terrible being one of the few people with friendly relations to a powerful upincoming kingdom dose have benefits especially to a lower house as that position could be leveraged for influence.

I haven't read vol 14 yet, so maybe I have no clue, but here's my take, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. There's a saying - if 3 people know about something, then it's not a secret. Thousands were at the katze plains, some even managed to return. While not everyone was able to comprehend what exactly happened, the effects speak for themselves. So imo, yes, Philip is an utter idiot.
By that same logic, if 2 people know about something, then it's not a secret either. Only way to make sure something remains a secret is to keep it to yourself. But eh... shit going bad for the kingdom, some idiot causing unfathomable damage with his stupidity, not only for himself but eventually surely others around him too. Hilma's reaction told everything you need to know... some seemed to think she was having Vietnam flashbacks when the dumbass was digging a grave for himself... but I believe it's not that. She probably was just afraid to get dragged into that mess that dumb noble just created. Maybe she wasn't seeing what happened to her before, but what would happen to her again if she goes back. She knows he and people associated with him will not know peace.

Yeah, Phillip was never intended to be in his current position. Something people need to understand about the setting, is that it's taking place in a medieval world, with an obviously established caste system and social hierarchy. There's no 'everybody's an equal here' mentality. You have peasant folk who are born to serve, and you have nobility who are born to rule. And even in the case of the nobility, the only ones who actually matter in the family are the 1st born heirs. Everybody else is just considered a 'spare replacement' in case something went wrong with the first.
I think my favorite thing about what Ainz did at the Katze Plains is that the event was being monitored by the Black Scripture agent Thousand Leagues Astrologer, who became a shut in for several days upon realizing even the Theocracies God-Kins would be unlikely to stand a chance. So at least some of the Theocracy higher ups believe Ainz is a huge threat.
From his perspective he's trying to make a power play and she is beautiful and a sure fire way to get infavor of this God like being. So don't think he's an idiot but he is such a small piece he can't even see the board he's playing on. I am an anime only fan though havnt read the LN or anything else so I am sure I am missing a lot of context on Philip
Oh ainz is smart. Even top tier, as an yggdrasil player that is. Much more in pvp even if he couldn’t beat touch me. But politics and stuff? Yea we’ll let his luck and op subordinates handle those boring stuff.
Ainz might not be a politically smart person, given that he doesn't even know what a vassal state is. but as a war tactician, i believe he's better than Demiurge. he's the kind of person that would send strong pawns to survey enemies, and preparing countermeasures. in the OG games, you can only win once against him, and never again, except for Touch Me.
Phillip was the third in line of succession. In the families the first was the only one that was trained and educated to rule. After the massacre at the plains, Phillip along with many others were thrust into positions they have no knowledge about as their older siblings were wiped out or have retreated into themselves with ptsd. Because of their life of everyone around them constantly telling them how great they are but having no actual training their own hubris makes up the difference. So you get.. Phillip. Side-Note: The kingdoms army was conscription not full time soldiers. So basically the kingdoms workers. Not only did the kingdoms army get wiped out, their actual labor force got eliminated. Now if we can just see a scene where Albedo absolutely destroys this moron for daring to touch her all will be complete.
While that is true it does not change the fact he was a stubborn fool who refused to listen to others and just did what he wanted thinking he knew what was best thinking he could win
A veteran from the battle clearly and calmly explaining what happened "OH FUCK! GIANT GOATS! SPLAT SPLAT SPALTx5000! WE DEAD WERE ALL FUCKING DEAD! AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
Philip is kind of right. You can make the argument he can actually see through Ainz' being just a normal guy wearing the most powerful being in the world.
at this point Ainz is nowhere near normal. He turned into an super intelligent Lich. Even if he doesn't realize it he himself is subconsciously making every right move because thats how he was when he was roleplaying. A extemely smart undead lich king. Hes ascended as a whole. Kinda feel bad for him because he can't feel extreme emotions but hes gotten use to it now.
He's not a "normal guy" anymore, due to the stat dump he placed unto his roleplaying character he's now turned into a mage version of the Lich King and is now far more intelligent
Yeah but he hasn't interacted with Ainz so it would be impossible for him to know that. To anyone who has read the reports, they would think he's some mastermind evil guy and don't have a reason to think otherwise especially when people like the Emperor fall at his feet
Phillip is a great example of someone who used wisdom and int as dump stats but has incredible 'luck' coz let's be fair for a second. His heist of the grain should NEVER had worked, literally everything was against him but he got lucky and it worked out. Like if the merchant transporting the grain had prioritised protecting it instead of overthinking the situation, or his allies had shown up sooner to turn on him, etc. etc. but it all went his way. The fall out wasn't lucky to be fair, but if anything had gone different making the excuse to wipe out the kingdom then would have been much flimsier.
I haven't caught up with overlord LN, currently at vol. 12 and... this is the only character that i didn't feel bad looking up weather he was dead or not
while you do bring a good point to the lack of knowledge thing but the real thing he should have done was at least look into the situation more like ask himself and others like why were they “exaggerating” so much about the battle and ainz power and such
ow I don't disagree, I don't make these videos because I'm super heavy invested in said view point, but more just to look at many views and have fun talking about them all :)
What would you think if someone told you they saw a god? You'd think they're crazy. Although to be fair I don't think this analogy or the phone in the past analogy fits. New world was exposed to players in the past. Slane Theocracy build a religion out of them. You'd think more people would put those things together. That being said, Ainz's power is irrelavent. Even if he was just a guy, do you think it's wise to antagonize a guy who appears out of nowhere and get Re-Eztize kingdom to submit to his demands with the help of Empire? Even if they won on a fluke, they still won and Re-Eztize submited.
Pretty much it's like trying to get humans in our reality to think and believe a actual fairy tale was actually real. No one would, and that might actually get our own race killed or extinct in the end because something someone would laugh of as that can't be true when it's actually happen would do things exsctly like philip would do because from how ridiculous and stupid all this overwhelming information was. They would make plans and ignore all the things they thought were absolutely stupid, ridiculous and absurd and not make any changes in their plans simply from something "ridiculous" appearing. Hell, it's happening all the time irl with news channels a such no one knows what to believe and what to not believe all because of even a potential "poisoned information system and source of information. It's like what Hermes from danmachi said in the during the familia war games " Just a drop of poison in a information system can do unrecoverable damage." So if you think about it if that's just a drop what would a full dose or more than a full dose of poison would do to ours everyday information system?.
That's more Ainz's fault, and an inevitability given the nature of the kingdom. I mean, seriously, committing genocide and killing millions over a single shipment of grain? Philip's a moron, but the reaction of Ainz Ooal Gown is idiotically over the top.
The only dumber character I know would be kouki from arifureta. He's self absorbed self and self righteousness were too high he would ignore literally all kinds of trouble people were asking for his help for like bullying, suicide, another but severly bullied classmate he also did nothing about and again let happen because he ideals were there is no such thing as a bad person. He wouldn't kill a demon girl even tho she was literally killing his entire squad with himself in it and he was next in line and still couldn't do it when he had the power to. Just.. so many.. too many things wrong with him. His own undecideness towards literally everything ruined his life and nearly yet just about killed every single one of his classmates and that's just the beginning of his problems.
I was reading the light novel and it’s hilarious just how stupid his actions were. The merchant was overthinking so much because he couldn’t fathom someone doing something so stupid. Not only stealing the food but stepping on the flag. Imagine your actions causing the death of 90% of your country.
He is like those flat earthers who think the world is flat bc of science or how gods made the earth in there image but the people who think the earth is flat bc the government is a lier
As you said most people can't comprehend the scope of Ainz personnal power let alone the total might of Nazzaric, we saw this numerous time in how some character react: to most normal people magic is already wonderous, to run of the mill adventurer tier 3 spells are already an accomplishment, adamentite party can use probably up to 5th tier and the best magician maybe can go up to 5th tier spells and is regarded as the pinnacle. So of course most will take the report of ainz power with a grain of salt. So he is blindsided by his lack of accurate info and lack the proper training and experience to perform in his position, with that said there is still plenty of reason to label him a fool: lack of knowledge and intel should push him to be cautious and not foolhardy, he don't second guess any of his decision and he is oblivious to all the negative point of his plan. I mean, even if the supply shipement came from another less dangerous kingdom, how was it going to makes him look good to attack "Humanitarian" supply ???
Do you think if the author didn’t decide to end the light novels early. There would have been more progress between ainz and albedo because both are really popular plus promoted together?
I see him as more of a fool then an idiot. Not knowing information that isn’t fully available and understandable then actually on a misunderstanding of what you do know is foolish not idiotic.
Actually the love he feel for Albedo is so great that Ainz power in comparison is weak, that is why Philip relationship with Albedo will continue to increase
And also, i wouldn't approach a succubus that didn't go lust, thrusting some libido and try to seduce someone but behave like a true lady in the room. Someone that could tame succubus is truly an overlord.
I'd enjoy Philips character a lot more if he had the ability to return by death and redoes all his beyond stupid decisions that lead to the deaths of millions of people.
@@spyridon7109 Reminds me of a sketch created by a UA-camr mocking videogame plots of RPGs. The character made bad decisions so he reloaded the save back to the beginning... only to make it worse. So he had to go back and fix it again by seemingly making things worse, but it all turned out better.

I wonder who is gonna do him in and put his idiot ass in place. I'm thinking it will be either Demiurge or either his minions or one of the battle maid coz I don't think he is worthy of even a speck Albedo's time.
I think albedo does it because someone said his father wanted to promise albedo to make his son feel "everyone's pain" she said she would see to it personally herself.
To be fair, Ainz is an idiot himself. He doesn't even remember he agreed for World Domination. And I think that's kind of the point. In a way, all the protagonists can be considered idiots from a certain PoV. That's not to say they are helpless; some are nightmarishly strong, evil and a World level threat. So, to put everything into perspective, what would happen if a guardian floor met Saitama?
I thought that the grain part was done by the eight finger under ains (demiurge?) Order, since he should be the idot hilma talk about in the intermission in vol 14. He has to act like an idiot probably for the sake of being exterminate once he has helped enought and so make ains look better.
The grain incident was done by Phillip with no input from the Eight Fingers at all. The only influence on him was a couple of nobles who flattered him into it on the idea that he'd get himself killed, which would quietly remove a cancer from the kingdom. That the plan worked at all was a huge shock to them and frankly everyone who heard about it.
@@btetirick yes i just started the volume 14, and i am somehow shocked he did that without any real manipulation, even the noble were basically just nodding and didn't do much.
Never have I ever pitied a character so early into their introduction in a series than Philip here. The moment he said he wanted to marry Albedo, I knew he done right then and there.
the thing is all the players that came before ainz i doubt were level 100. that and even if they were they wouldnt have as good gear as ainz has. they might have world items yes but it would be a country's biggest trump card. ainz has a bunch of world items and super items. on top of the strongest npcs made and so on. he would be the strongest player to appear. that and him learning other classes would also make him stupidly broken way more than he is. doubt the other heros dabbled in other classes let alone mastered them. add onto the fact that ainz being undead doesnt have a life span and the guardians if not dont have one have one way longer than most races. that or being an npc gives them infinite life spans as well. lets say they also master all classes. or ainz teaches them all his magic spells. it wouldnt matter how strong any human gets. they wouldnt win without some overpowered bs plot armor.
Can't confirm about all transported players being level 100, since power armor was used to help new players level up fast. But the platinum dragon lord said something about transported players having at least 2-3 world items. Also I think nazarick was among the strongest teams since after the took over the dungeon no other team has managed to reach past a certain floor
@@arno7163 someone's group did kill aura and mare before I don't remember but that was floor..6? If I remember. While I think nazaricks treasury has 8 to 10 world items from the looks of ainz in the scene in the treasure room with the illusion door that has a code basically the vault for the world items in the one scene.

Loved the analysis btw ! Keep em’ coming !
on god, my best chances of surviving is just looking from afar and just submit to the sorcerer kingdom
O ye of little light novel reading
ya for instance his initial idea of making relations with the sorcerer kingdom is not terrible being one of the few people with friendly relations to a powerful upincoming kingdom dose have benefits especially to a lower house as that position could be leveraged for influence.
@@aawallace98 i like how he thought marrying the second greatest figure from a kingdom which has the entire world in edge is easier than marrying princess renner
I kind of love it for it. There is so much he says that's at least puts him on the right track, but his hilarious lack of foresight means that he's not even running on that track.
Dude thought his Baron title put him on par with a "small" country's prime minister.
nah he is definitely dumb
She knows he and people associated with him will not know peace.
not like they have great communication tools
I also blame the king. He literally could’ve saved his ppl by giving Philip up to the Sorcerer Kingdom.
@@Loaves_of_Cat from some other comments that were spoilers he was dead before that action can be used. The king can't save his people if he's dead. But that could be a potential of working if Nazarick isn't too ignorant of the info and go overboard in anger sometimes like albedo and shalltear do.
@@clearsky9109 no, when Philip first stole the grains, the king was still alive and instead of appeasing a stronger country for an obvious crime that benefits no one, the king protects Philip.
Then the dumba** thinks he can smooth things over with his head like it means a damn.
Some wise man once said
"If she's beauty and have high position or know some high position people and aren't interested with you, never approach her, if she's approached you, you may start doubting her and becarefull with your act"
Oh, seems like good advice even in real lie context. But who actually said it?
i don't really know it but my father told me and i asked him that his lecturer at history class taught him, so probably the word is from other resource, probably some old history book with full message quote's (including the popular quote) or from people to people?
I think he just doesn't know who Ainz and Albedo really are. He actually thinks Albedo is this naive rich girl he can seduce and he probably took her non reactions to his advances as signal that she won't resist . Even Albedo who holds so much authority that even Demiurge avoids her at times still pretends to be nice even though she literally does not care about formalities and is the most cruel of all the guardians.
Exactly. People in the New World don't treat Ainz or Nazarick in general with enough seriousness. They haven't saw anything like him for centuries.
Yep but when both his brothers sided his father had no choice
I think my favorite thing about what Ainz did at the Katze Plains is that the event was being monitored by the Black Scripture agent Thousand Leagues Astrologer, who became a shut in for several days upon realizing even the Theocracies God-Kins would be unlikely to stand a chance. So at least some of the Theocracy higher ups believe Ainz is a huge threat.
My favorite about what he did was. Splat splat splat splat splat splat splat splat splat splat

Thank You! 👍🏼

@@negate4828 not technically lich, since Overlord is advanced class for the lich. Yes, I am that guy (akcchually).
@@matejbosela9093 XD I get it. Thanks for the information genuinely tho.

Because of the stupid and delusional insect Philip, he doomed his own kingdom even got the innocent Villagers impaled.

This man doesn’t believe Ainz is powerful meanwhile the Dwarf and the chubby dragon believes his a good friend and a leader

The grain incident was done by Phillip with no input from the Eight Fingers at all.
