Thanks for this video, I was there as a kid 1974-1981, spent 2nd grade in the little schoolhouse on Graves Barracks by the back gate, 3rd-8th grades in the main school between the base chapel and the NCO club. When I was there, the first McDonald's opened across the street from the Hauptbahnhof, and a KFC opened up across the street from Jaeger Kaserne but became a bar before 1981. There were no Burger Kings, but they had just renovated the commissary to be double its old size by then. The Jaeger cafeteria got remodeled around 1980-81 into a burger stand, I missed the old cafeteria with its steam tables and the soda island in the middle. The dental clinic was upstairs, and the fellow who repaired pool tables had his workshop in the basement. btw when did they block off the main entrance on Wurzburgerstrasse? I saw that they put up a temporary wall, and put parking spots in the entrance during the '80s. WTF? So did everyone have to go in through the side gate near the motor pool? Anyway, a lot of memories, not only of the kasernes but of the town itself, the weekend markets near the Pink Castle, Schoental park, Fasanerie park, City Gallerie shopping mall...thanks again for the video...btw until I saw this video, I had no idea we had M60A2s on Ready Barracks, I thought they were all A1s :)

I was part of the slim group of troops with the mission of closing the place down on the 9th engr side,in 1992. and with that the end of my army day's went home on a early out after 13 years. I have to say germany was a great place to be I was lucky enough to spend 8years there and all over the place have to say hands down best time of my life.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm actually choking back tears from watching this. My years in Aschaffenburg, '86-'91, were the best years of my life. I get so homesick when I think about it.

I hear you! Absolutely, the best years of my life. I was stationed on Fiori Kaserne, assorted units, in the 1/80th FA, from 1975-1987. Was fortunate enough to get stationed in Hanau, my last 5 years, 1999-2004. Would periodically go to A-Burg just to go. I consider that place my 2nd home. Miss it dearly!

I was a Cottonbaler, Graves Kas., Alpha 1/7th from Feb. 82 thru 88, I extended twice as A burg was a great garrison Town and I had no interest in serving back in the US after several soldiers had DEROsed to the states and actually transferred back, telling us the real Army was in Germany........hey, Who remembers macht nichts Charlie? Nice old guy would sell trinkets and stuff on the strasse? Bought my first souvenir from him. The River Fests, schwimbad ( swimming pool) .....'Heylands' Beer(sp?) We called it 'Headache' Beer lol.
We'd pool our money and do the ole 'You fly, I buy' and one of us would taxi down and back to McDs across the street from the Bonhof.......Fantastic video , thank you very much....gotta admit when I saw the 1/7 HQ Graves sign at 2:33 I got misty, I was in Alpha co. and that sign was about 20 yards away if that, from the front of our barracks, the HQ being up the stairs to the right, saw that sign every formation for 6 years......
I remember A Burg and Germany very well and had the time of my life.I miss all you Aburg natives,...thank you for the memories, truly

Stationed in Aburg Smith Kasserne 1978-1981 before DEROS to Ft. Leonard wood. Arrived, was instructed by 1stSGGT Fitzgerald put away most of gear, I'll band your wall Locker, bring your utilities. Went to Graff, didn't see Aburg again for 30+ days as we were on CEMTAP (combat engineer maintenance of training area (Deployment)) Loved Aburg but didn't get to spend much time there we were always going somewhere. Our LDA was in Spessart Mountains, I think they call them Hills now. But if your humping all the gear you carry as a 12B- I was issued the M-60 and all the associated equipment. Who's the rest of the gun crew... YOU! So the tripod, T and E stayed on the truck. I was also blessed with all the ammo.. It would be easier for our guys to look in one place and we didn't stay anywhere long enough for the T-pod and T&E to be useful. Also easier to hump up the Hills just saying.

I was in Smith Barracks 9th Engineers 71-72 and I hated that place. It was tortuous and miserable in those barracks. I recall some “red flag” five day exercise wherein we had to drive our five tons and duce and a halfs around Germany, camping out in the freezing snow plus build a stupid pontoon bridge across the Rein while legitimate river traffic was backed up for miles. Was there about eight months leaving in late January 72 getting out of the Army after three years and a tour of Vietnam. However, myself and friends got to tour much of Germany on our days off even driving to Amsterdam. A lot of local beer was also consumed, delicious and not at all like beers found here in the States.

As a 4 year old in 1952, my brother and I would run to the corner to watch the tanks, jeeps and trucks roll by. I loved the tanks, clanking down the street.
