- Here is a campy 1975 News Promo preceeded by a commercial for Tropical Chevrolet, which touts NEW Chevys for $4688. NO BALONEY! Ralph Renick touts the virtues of reporter Joan Hall, then the only hard news woman reporter on-air in Miami.
I was driving a 1974 Impala similar to that one (not a wagon) about 6 or 7 years ago when someone pulled out in front of me. It hit their car even though I tried to avoid it (they kept coming). The Impala suffered no damage because the huge front bumper was mounted on some sort of shock absorbers with flexible fillers around it. The other car was totaled! Those big Chevys were very popular in demolition derbies from the 1980s on due to the bumper design.
See? And they all made fun of the 5 mph impact bumpers when they came out. Glad your Impala was ok. Do you still own it?
I lived in Florida, Miami, since 1975. Tropical Chevrolet is still there, a few blocks from my home.
And, lucky me, my dad bought a used 75Impala for me in 1978.
La cagó, tremendo carro gallo. Las pololas sobraban. Super yate el Impala.
We had no major issues with the car but it was sold in 1989 with 130,000 miles on it. The transmission failed when the car was about 13 years old and 115,000 cost maybe $700 to rebuild. Shortly after that we replaced the radiator and water pump.
But the only reason that car was sold was my mother was too sick to drive and I delivered pizza and commuted to school. So I bought a new compact car with much better mileage. And yes, it was a Chevy.
My family owned a 1975 Impala Wagon and when I drove it I found the mileage to average 8-15 mpg. The 15 was on the highway without using the AC and staying within the speed limit, which was then 55 mph.
I have one of these cars. The most I've gotten out of it was about 21mpg on a trip...it has a free flowing exhaust system, no A/C, and highway gears in it with a 4bbl carb. I had another one that had AC and a 2bbl and it wasn't as good. The thing that hurts this era of car is the 3 speed transmissions mostly...if overdrive was available when new they'd have gotten much better mileage...even small cars in the 1970s weren't that great on gas.
Some people including myself love wagons. My all time favorite is the 1967 AMC Rambler Rebel.
My parents bought one of those in 1976 i believe,i remember it was slightly used.Great car!!!!!
I forgot to mention that my family did buy chevrolets from Tropical Chevrolet. But the 1975 Impala wagon my family owned that I mentioned here was purchased at Adams Chevrolet in Delray Beach. Later known as Dennis Fronrath and has since moved from its downtown location and become part of the MARONNE monopoly of dealers in South Florida.
I am glad to know that Tropical Chevrolet still exists. Other than Roger Dean in West Palm Beach, they may be the only original Chevy dealers left in S FLA
Ralph Renick was THE man! R.I.P. buddy
@StoneCold75 Thank you for the info there. I did see an old 1974 sedan sitting in Fremont, California. Car was from Toronto Canada and still in back of a GM repair shop there. Biscaynes were also used as Taxicabs in Canada.
Yep, I actually put TRW "Hef-T-Coils" in this thing as well, they totally stiffened up the ride in the back, however the ride is a little bit bouncy. If I find the sway bar, I may take them out, haven't decided yet.
Tropical Chevrolet's street address is like the old Biscayne model. That was the old super low priced Chevrolet that was sold to police departments, goverenment agencies or to people who wanted a full size car but, did not want to spend extra money. From 1973 to 1975 The Biscayne was ONLY sold in Canada.
Man that thing was a BEAST!
RITSP, Ralph Renick.
Beautiful.
This clips seems to have been recorded off of a monitor and the audio is picked up from a mic. The original audio wouldn't sound like that and most likely sounded quite good.
Damn tropical chevrolet is that old my mom bought a 2001 suburban back in2000 and they're still there I think.
I actually have another '74 Impala coupe now that I've added Bilstein Sport shocks and wider low profile tires to, it outhandles many new cars now...LOL. A rare option on those vehicles was a rear sway bar that mounted under the lower control arms. They mostly came on Pontiacs and for some reason the Caprice convertibles. I'm still trying to find one of those but will probably wind up adapting a Ford Crown Victoria sway bar in it's place, just have to drill two holes!
MattTrakker350 I got the 74 custom coupe with all the goodies.
Love the poor echo effect of their sound recording. Shows how much things have improved audio-visual wise...
What was the FUEL MILEAGE for that Impala wagon?
Ahh..Miami before the Mariel boatlift...what a different city
Desde la ciudad de Miami Beach Florida
I LOVE those old GM Land Yachts!!! The QE2s of the Interstate!!!!
@frankd1965 Yeah Biscayne Blvd is actually the name in Miami for US-1..which in fact runs straight up from Miami to Maine..
I don't get why in 1975 The Impala inherited the Caprices former front end (1974)
Even full-sized vans get better mileage today!
When did it break down and what was the part that failed?
I like the chyron
Renick at 6pm
Brosemer at 11pm
What, 'TVJ couldn't get a live shot from the bar at 11pm?
id love a burgandy/black 1976 caprice estate wagon/unleaded model 350V8 NOT THE 400 OR 455,special ordered with every option, then store the wagon for 50 years and then start driving it and be king of the road.
@26highstreet Not back then it wasn't. It was a normal family car, normal size.
one hell of a derby car today
Tropic Thunder 1975 style !! LOL
she be stealin' my hubcaps! NOOOOO!!!!!
Me gusta la camioneta
Dang, is there any good reason why headlights must cost so much now?
probably 10/14
Wow, looks like Chevy Chase, for Chevy.
Rather have an old 70's honda or toyota.
Ignoring the gas mileage, that Impala wagon looks one roomy land yacht (be interesting on the corners) - haul up the anchors, put it in cruise mode and let many cubic inches of V8 haul from coast to coast...
how sad is this $4688 in 1975 is equivalent to $19,506.14 in 2010 in the year 2010 the 19,500.00 car your lucky to buy something like a ford focus or Chevy aveo maybe a Toyota Carola you most surely wont buy anything near the magnitude of that in a new car and for $4688 in 2010 that would be a car that would be maybe 10 or 15 years old if that.
this was the 1970's........ a time when rich people were truly rich, unlike the flaky fakes such as the people of the 1980's and onward who were a bunch of phony welfared rich wannabes who only could rely on credit cards and financing causing all sorts of inflation in the economy today.
'
this car was so strong body, 2 strong bumpers, heavy weight, and cheaper in 1970's,,,
today 1990 to 2011 all vehicles are so weak bodys, 2 weak bumpers, plastics / rubbers, light weights, and costy too much RIPOFF,,,
