For my car its suppose to be a 2 day job at most, but they've put 3 clutches in and none have worked, and FCA and the dealership doesnt know what to do
Well thankfully theyre not charging me each time they have to yank the trans out or else id be going there at night with a tow truck and stealing it back haha.
I don't even own a Ferrari or need to change the motors mounts on one haha but still a very interesting video, as for the rest of your uploads too. Thanks for sharing
Dan thanks for all the videos on repairing your F430. In the past month I did my own Engine oil, F1 Fluid and Power Steering fluid changes and cleaned up several sticky buttons because of your DIY videos. Then today I replaced my own engine mounts after seeing how easy they were to do from your video. Thanks for all the awesome videos and helping us see that a Ferrari is just another car to work on and not anything to be scared of. Keep up the good work and hope you're enjoying the 458. Frank
Dan, congrats on the increased success of your channel. This video was extremely helpful. I've noticed that gear shifts on my 430 Spider are quite clunky so I'll be getting the engine mounts replaced this weekend. Thanks for posting this!
Just had the engine mounts replaced. I haven't picked it up yet but the mechanic said it's driving WAY better now and shifts (and even idling) will be much smoother. Thanks again for posting this and keep up the good work with your channel, Dan!
So, since a lot of people wondered, I just got an estimate from my Ferrari dealer ok the this exact job on my Scud. It came in at $1,534 parts and labor + tax. Now you know!!
I find this channel to be more informative and entertaining than the other guys. (no name dropping here) Besides the great info, these videos just seem more “normal” and real. Many from other channels seemed dramatic for the sake of being dramatic, or just plane bad acting. I will be contacting you as it gets closer to my purchase for consultation. (still a few years) Well done.
first of all great job with the videos. nice to see someone actually driving their Ferrari and working on it. I was the same way when I had my 355. As much work as you’re doing though I’d recommend a lift. There are lots of options these days that would fit in your garage. I used a bendpak md6 mid rise on my 355 and it worked pretty well. You will have to make some wood ramps for the 430 to clear but it will work. Again keep up the good work. I drove the 430 with an F1 transmission about 5 years ago and they are amazing machines. Hard to explain to others how quickly that motor spins up and down.
I've watched 4 or 5 of your vids now - I'm an avid modifier of mid level German sport sedans / hot hatch. Someone has to have asked this by now, but why do you use hand tools for every task no matter how minor? Even just taking the belly cover off with a cordless ratchet would be a huge jump in efficiency. I've got different cordless ratchets / impacts that usually get set up with different bits. A couple have very gentle and modulatable torque for a light touch. I shudder to think of the forearm cramping and compounded extra time out of my life doing every fastener by hand. No disrespect, just can't help but wonder. You're definitely inspiring peeps with your vids and you seem like a great guy. Respeck.
there's pros and cons, with power tools, especially cordless ones , you need to keep the batteries always charged up or they die quickly. People like me who work on our cars maybe once 3 or 6 months , it's extra effort to check the night before batteries are on charge. Some are definitely a big help like impact wrenches for.breaking bolts loose. If you're a mechanic daily working on cars definitely having power tools is your need.
Great video, I have to check my engine mounts in my 2007 f430. I do all my own work on the car. I have changed gear and engine oil, changed power steering fluid, spark plugs, o2 sensors, headers, steering rack, tie rods, air filters, f1 fluid, car is very easy to work on. Steering rack was hard.
Quick tip, I used a fine tipped correction pen to number every tooth of my jack stands on both sides . That way I save so much time not having to count teeth and eyeball whether are they raised to the same height each side.
This is awesome, Daniel! Thanks so much for doing the vid and congrats on the great results. Reminds me of Matt Farah's statement about doing what work you can on your own exotic: ~"Exotic cars are not made of exotic parts."
Hey Daniel! I found out about your UA-cam when I was at cars and coffee Austin on June 11th while I was fan boying around my dream car (your Ferrari ) and grabbed a UA-cam card. I live in Austin and love your channel and your car! Hope to see it driving around!!!
You can have an engine failure. The cracks produce metal flakes, and those flakes can get sucked back into the cylinders damaging the cylinder walls and pistons.
Really impressed with the great camera work and editing to show the motor moving with new and old mounts, as well as the observation of shifting behavior in both scenarios. In the future, it might be cool if you could call the local Ferrari service department and let us know what they would charge to do this repair, and contrast that with the DIY cost (ie, cost of parts + cost of any specialty tools you needed to purchase for the repair.
Dan, Firstly, thank you for all your videos and all you've done. Just wondering as I didn't see a current answer, were there any connections you had to undo from the engine or the topside prior to jacking the motor? I know the exhaust is as fragile as a faberge egg so did you undo any of the exhaust brackets connecting them to the chassis? PS I do appreciate the bleeping as my daughter watches these with me sometimes. Thank you sir. Drivnxcitment on Fchat, I've seen you there as well. Take care!
Nice to see not even Ferrari is immune to design compromises that puts important rubber bits near the exhaust path. Only 2 mounts? I assume from the before/after change in engine movement that the mounts are in the "front" part of the engine (closest to you). What supports it in the back? There must be a system supporting the transmission which I assume is bolted to the back end of the engine.
Thanks for all the great videos! I'm going to be replacing the engine mounts in my 430 spider in a couple weeks based on your video. I was wondering why you didn't put in the four small bolts prior to the one large bolt to avoid the alignment issues? Sorry if I'm missing something obvious thanks Frank
Would it have made it easier to pull them both simultaneously with the motor jacked initially, or was raising/lowering repeatedly during each side necessary to get them to drop in and line up? And do you check specs and torque accordingly or just wing it?
I admire your courage to work on an exotic by yourself + a few good friends. 4 wheels and a steering wheel right? Compared to my 996 C4S it appears to be a fairly straight forward piece of machinery as far as wielding the wrench autonomously. At least the amount of space in the engine bay seems as good or even better than some old-school Amcars. Keep it up, it's fun to watch.
I really like that you DIY. I'm thinking you probably should have put some Loctite on those bolts given the vibrations they sustain? Did you use a torque wrench to torque things to factory spec?
Great Vid Dan, as always.. The "bleeping" was pretty dang funny, but much appreciated. You mentioned that your shifting has become smoother after the motor mount (MM) replacement. I don't recall seeing any replacement timing on the Manual for the MM's. What made you to think of changing them in the first place - mileage???
What a huge difference in movement. I would have thought changing the mounts would be more extensive. One thing I've been wondering. How many tickets have you gotten in it?
The car should handle better, might even have better 60’ Times at the drag strip with the motor mounts fixed. In fact I’m really curious if there was a difference in ‘60 times before and after the new motor mounts?
Fun stuff. DIY on a Ferrari. Please use an impact socket when using the impact gun. They can shatter and scatter. I would have at least put a shop rag on the top of the jack stand as a Ferrari's frame came down on it. Did you order your transmission mounts or at least inspect them? Does that Ferrari have transmission mounts? Those two crushed engine mounts may have stressed out other components, with the engine bouncing up like that. Can't even guess how much the dealer would have wanted for that simple repair. big $$$ I'll bet? Love seeing how the Ferrari is put together. : )
From watching your how to videos, working on your Ferrari seems to be relatively easy. My Ducati's seem similar in design and construction, but not as easy to work on and obliviously they're bikes. I like your videos. Entertaining and. Informative. Have you looked at the Dannmar Maxxjax portable two pole lift. It is made for the smaller garage. Certainly will offer more room than any jack stand or ramp. Yes. I have subscribed.
I would have taken both old motor mounts out at the same time and then finish tightening both at the same time. Because having to lift the engine again to take the second one out you just stressed the new mount you just installed and may have reduce its life.
Actually, contrary to the title, the engine would not fall out. The engine mounts were clearly bad but the design of the through-bolt would not allow the engine to 'fall' out of the engine bay. The movement of the engine on the mounts will put stress on the half-shaft CV joints, intake flex bellows and the exhaust system. I have a 360 with the identical design and monitor the mounts each year for any looseness or excessive engine movement under load. These cars are now approaching 20 years of age and rubber components exposed to engine heat will fail.
Good ol greaser moustache 😄.... Any hands on persons favourite past time to wipe under their nose after accomplishing a difficult task haha..... Good job!
heh even a harbor freight set of torque wrenches are actually decent(no snap on mind you), on par with the current craftsman ones. I got away without them for a long time until I broke a couple bolts on my truck's transmission, then I learned the hard way! Sometimes you just can't fit them into tight spaces though and just have to tighten and pray they don't snap!
Those mounts were fuc###d What about polyurethane mounts ? I had them on my Alfa V6 before. Whilst not good for suspension components they were ok for engine mounts.
Great video! It was fascinating how the before video showed the engine appear to lift straight UP rather than rocking from side to side like you normally see with failing mounts. Are you concerned that doing your own maintenance could cause issues when you sell the car down the road, since people always want a pile of official dealership service paperwork when buying a used exotic, versus just "oh, I did all that stuff myself"?
Watching your videos makes me less scared to work on my Viper
I'll most likely be doing my own work on it for now on, its been at the dealership for two months for a clutch job.

perhaps they don't do them then my bad, how about using the ones from the Challenge Stradale they were a harder compound rubber
