I was one of those people who don't like to learn languages I thought it was too difficult and I wasn't never be able to learn any other language, but now I've been learning English by myself for about 6 months and I consider myself an independent learner. Nowadays, I can say that I've developed passion for language learning and I'm going to learn as much as I can so that I can teach people how to learn languages by themselves especially here in Brazil where people are like I was, they struggle too much and don't know that they are able to learn languages. This is my mission, show people that they do can learn languages by themselves.

@Al 72 How do you know he is Muslim?
That's interesting!! Because I've spent 20 years of my entire life or so hating english I don't know why but I didn't like it at all and because of I've learnt spanish before english, however, now I like so much learn english. I can't spend one day without learning it and improve more a little bit each day. It's became fun for me and a few days ago I started to learn French and it's so fun as english is right now. I guess I didn't like english because of the way of the elementary school taught to us. Learning language is like climbing mountain each day you improve a little bit to get closer the fluency.
Hi there! I'm Dennis from Brazil, and I live in São Paulo. I think the same. If we really want to learn a language or something, we need to do orselfs, because only we know our passion for learn and improve our knowledge. I can speak Spanish and English. I learn by myself, I'm not totally fluent yet, however I'm studying everyday. At this moment I'm learning German Franch and Italian too.

When I am struggling to speak a language I keep on reminding myself of when people say "kids are going through the terrible 2s". I guess during that time, kids have enough input but the output is not matching and hence the frustration and saying "no" all the time. They eventually improve and that gives me comfort, knowing I would improve too.
I hope u can have a conference here in Philippines. I will surely attend. I've been studying foreign languages on my own for almost ten years. But I just can't focus my studies due to some reasons. I hope we can meet someday Ms. Lydia. 😇🙏

I have been watching a lot of videos about how she had learned a lot of languages by herself. Since I watched a video of her on Ted talks.
Very inspiring interview. I live in Flanders, Belgium and have got French classes at school for seven years and still don't have a clue of what they are saying on the Wallonian news. I have to think really hard to find the rights words when having a conversation in French. Maybe it's time to try it in a different way!
@Al 72 I wouldn't say they taught me to avoid speaking. We did get speaking tests, but they just give you a grade without any feedback. They evaluate you on skills they don't teach.
@Al 72 I think you have a point there. Most of the vocabulary they taught me in school was quite irrelevant. We started by learning names of animals, vegetables and body parts and words like 'to jump' or 'to turn around', which you are obviously not likely to use in a conversation with a native speaker, certainly not as a beginner. When we go to France and I think I'll be able to practice my French, my parents speak English, even though they have a sufficient basis in French. They are just not confident because of what you described, I guess.
Currently, I'm preparing for a German exam and I'm reading words in my vocabulary lists like 'Gartenzwerg' (garden gnome) and 'Sprungbrett' (diving board), which I just had to look up in English even though I'm fluent in that language. In my native language, I might have used these words like 20 times or less in my entire life.

If you don't take level test it is difficult to know your level but I do agree that it is not always good to assess your abilities .. a language exam or a teacher are better ..I am studying languages by myself therefore I usually do these type of tests to understand if I have made progress it is useful because How can a person know his/her level by himself /herself? From my point of view it is not possible ...
Denis Federov a Russian youtuber, said he learned conversatioonal English in about six months, because he simply put 10 hours of exposure/learning a day. You know about these numbers, 700 hours, 1100 hours and 2200 hours etc it takes roughly to become conversational?

Since I dont work, I thought 'cool, I will be like Denis, and just put in 6-8 hours a day into Russian and I will be speaking and understanding in no time'. I have noo evidence other than feeling, but I feel that so many hours daily was not beneficial to me. I did it for about a month annd gave that up. I feel my sweet spot is about 1.5-2 hours daily. Wish it were more because I have the time.

All polyglots will tell you to speak more. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes because you WILL improve the more you speak.
A few years ago, my girlfriend and I were in Crete, with her little son, waiting at the Central bus station. I went over, to ask the clerk about the bus number and when he will arrive. In that very moment, her son throw my can of beer on the floor, and brought me out of concept. I wasn´t able to speak english, just switching to czech, because he and she were from Czech Republic. Even my mothers tongue vanished, I´m Austrian. That was a shocking experience, because english I´ve learned many, many years ago in school, but czech just about a year before...
