I feel like when talking about "blackness" it's often about people outside of Africa. Africans are rarely included.
That is very true, but to add to that, I think that the black identity functions a little differently on the Motherland. In Africa I think there is a larger variety of identities, feuds, and even the fact that some oppressors of African people are African people from different tribes? (Correct me if im wrong) but in other countries, it doesn't matter what tribe you are from, because no matter what, Black people are usually considered the bottom of the caste systems, and as a counter to that, a mix of various tribes and identities unified and uplift one another as a more unified group because it's more of an Us vs. Them kind of relationship. But I do think that we should definitely include more Africans into the uplifting and celebrating during this month, and to learn at the feet of our brothers and sisters on the continent and exchange culture, it's just that I and many others assumed that because the relationship is different, y'all probably wouldn't vibe with it like we do, if that makes sense
Definitely. And the only time we're included is when we're represented by Nigeria or South Africa
So many Africans and even West Indian people correct us and tell black Americans not to refer to them as black ...
We need to do better about including black folks in Africa. I think the reason why in conversations regarding blackness often times have narratives of black people in non-black spaces is because in those spaces blackness itself is not a dominant culture and often requires those narratives to be seen. Essentially, when you are one of few you stand out more than when you are one of many. I do still agree though that west African voices need to be heard. I would think that blackness itself would function differently in countries where people rarely notice blackness as something unusual. Blackness itself was engineered as an antithesis of whiteness, so where there is little to no white people I wonder how Identity works with blackness.
It's a social construct for weak individuals spoiled by America, that's why. You are meeting the privileged.
It's frustrating how history is white washed and then when it's black history month, it's only the same folks being talked about (MLK, Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, etc) as if other people didn't rate a mention.
This is my first time doing it but for this black history month, I'm attempting to watch documentaries or stories (movies/shows) from black people and about black people for the duration of the month.
really? that’s mad! i live in the uk so i only learned about malcolm x and harriet tubman last year. we mostly focused on african and caribbean culture where i live, as most black people here are nigerian or jamaican (though it’s very diverse). it’s so annoying that there’s not more black history in schools
I definitely think that the women who talked about the Uk was centred on London ( where the majority of Black people in the Uk live) however, there are many other places where they live, and the cultures in those places are different. The curriculum has also greatly improved in recent years, as a quarter of my GCSE that I took a few years ago focused of African Americans and black history around the world

When I was younger I wanted to travel but I was scared that I couldn't because there wouldn't be black people or black communities and I would stick out like a sore thumb. I would've NEVER thought there was black people in Asian countries. I thought going to European countries would mean encountering racism especially if I went outside of the touristy part (like London).
I think black history month is a time of expanding our black experiences as well as honoring our collective pasts. Granted, people could do this year round but I think we all just go about our days and don't really think or process it because we're just living our lives.
Morgan Freeman said it best, "Black history is American history. It shouldn't be kept to one month." Outside of the US, go for it, have one month to teach Black History from aroind the world, but if the slavery of African people is a large part of your countries history, then it needs to be taught just as much as white history.
Depends on your teachers sometimes. I went to school in North London and I had a teacher of Zimbabwean descent so we learned a lot about Africa!

BLM looted and graffitied my small market, which is African American owned btw. Surveillance showed kids laughing “Black Lives Matter” as they were running away with stolen items. More like Burn Loot Murder/Marxism if you ask me. Can’t believe I used to support that violent movement....they’ve moved so far away from what I thought they’d be. Wish there was another movement to follow!!!!!

In my country we don't even know what black history month is-
That's likely because Black History month is an American celebration of Black/African-American contributions to *this* country. Not to say that others can't or shouldn't learn and celebrate but it is uniquely American and was created so that Black history wasn't erased or revised the way Native American history was. It still was/is, but because of Carter G. Woodson, it's less so.

Black **American** History Month is in February. The UK has their Black History month in October.
Black History Month (AKA African American History Month) is actually for Black Americans... So if you are "celebrating" BHM in another country, then that means you are learning Black American History.
Black history month does not exist here (Germany) or just a few people "celebrate" it. its more about African/Caribbeans celebrating their culture and learning about it here
Black history month was invented by black Americans scholars in the late 1880s!! It has nothing to do with the diaspora!! People copy off of black Americans!! Which is why the whole world feels a need to clamp on to black Americans culture/history Which is wired. While I'm glad that more people are getting/creating the opportunity to learn their people's history, The Black History month that's going on right now in February is specifically about African Americans and our history. I hope that we can stay focused on that and not try to turn it into a Pan African catchall for black people globally. All history is important but it's okay for us as AA's to focus on us. We are allowed a turn in the spotlight without always feeling obligated to share it.

Most Afro Brazilians come from Central Africa. Countries like Angola, the Congo. Because of similarities in culture some afro Brazilians are believed to come from Nigeria. Black history month started in the United States because of the lack of information. February was chosen because Fredrick Douglass's birthday is in February. Later there was a push to make it a month. Carnival started in Rome but it was transformed in Trinidad into something different. While Brazil has carnival as well connecting the country to it's African roots they still keep up some of Romes traditional clothing with an Afro Brazilian spin on it. Many celebrate as a way to express their freedom from enslavement.

In the US it is Celebrate in February, but there is also Juneteenth, and in NY, they also have a Caribbean carnival in September, some thing like Hanifah mention.

Not speaking for all of Africa by any stretch, but many native Africans have stated that they do not feel the need for Black History Month (or celebrations specifically around being Black) because they are the majority in their respective countries and their countries' histories are taught in school and in the context of everyday life.
It's something they are, in a sense, able to take for granted as Black History for them is just *history* -- something that readily features and centers them daily, not something they have to dig deep for and/or reclaim (in spite of colonization).
In addition, many Africans tend to identify by ethnic group/tribe, country, and/or continent rather than race. Those of us in the diaspora who are primarily but not exclusively descendants of enslaved peoples in Europe and the Americas -- and whose tribal identifications are long lost to time -- tend to identify by race/ancestry over country, as many of the predominantly non-Black countries where we live never allow us to contextually take our race for granted or forget about it.
