  • J.S. Bach, Adagio from the Sonata for solo violin no. 1 in g minor, BWV 1001
Arranged for solo clarinet by Tommaso Lonquich
Filmed in Javorca Church, Slovenia on 24th April 2020
The Church of the Holy Spirit in Javorca, was created as a temple for peace in the midst of the First World War. Designed and built by soldiers who volunteered their money and work while fighting on the front, its bell tower is adorned with the Latin word PAX (peace) above the sundial.
It was designed in the Art Nouveau style by the Viennese architect, painter and lieutenant Remigius Geyling. The interior is decorated with oak panels, reminiscent of pages of a memorial book, on which were burnt the 2,564 names of fallen soldiers who died in the nearby battlefields.
The Church became a quiet place for soldiers from the many lands and religions which comprised the Austro-Hungarian Empire. For the religious among them, this was indeed a House of God; for all it was a sanctuary where they could meditate in peace and forget the woes of war, if only for a brief moment.
This temple stands as a reminder of the horrors of war, calling for reconciliation, for inner and lasting peace. As is inscribed on the entrance: "Ultra cineres hostium ira non superest" (Hatred should not survive beyond the ashes of the enemy).
