What's the complete vocal chain? It goes from the computer into the console, then through a dbx 902, then the 1176AE . On another channel, we'll have the 2-610, and a 902. It's kind of a mixture between the two… but it's mainly that 1176AE that gives it "the sound." Karen O [Yeah Yeah Yeahs] has a very distinctive, very different voice. Yeah… I used the same thing, same chain. Love it. Really? The same chain as Beyonce’s. That's really fascinating. Yeah. Obviously the EQ changes, and I do a lot of automation in the box, whether it be effects sends, different effects, stuff like that. There's a lot of automation. The EQs are automated in and out of different sections, because they need different treatments. That kind of thing definitely happens a lot in my mixes. How do you see using it in the future? Basically, for me, that's my vocal chain, and it's not changing. You know, I'd always been an LA-2A man. I mean, when I built the room at Olympic, over ten, eleven years ago, I went through eight LA-2As to find the one I loved. That was the big part of my vocal sound for many years. But this 1176AE Aniversary Edition, it just does something else. It just sits--it just does it for me. The way it makes vocals sit in the track, without it sounding compressed. It's just got a presence, and a punch to it, which I love.
Love and thank you guys dearly for putting on this show week after week! On a side note: The best and most informative shows were the ones, when Dave interviewed the guest by himself in the studio setup. Cheers!
What a nice and really easy person Spike is. I'm really glad to know that his not only the one of the best mix engineers in the world but also a really really pleasant person! Can't wait his new works.
Yeah, you guys blew this opportunity! I was excited to see 'Spike' as a guest but perhaps you should rename this episode "Herb... featuring Spike"! Holy Cow... the guy was even ASKING to spill some pertinent info and EVEN THEN you blew him off, as you were all too busy jerking around!! ... Spike SEEMED to enjoy being there so hopefully you can have him back again for a proper interview! ... Thank you for putting the show on... I just found this episode to be very frustrating.
that interview was so good. I love the part about classic engineering being important for the new generation coming up. how else will we make our Abbey Road's etc if we don't uphold some of the classic methods.
Thanks for everything you guys do, would be interesting to see and hear the differences between WAVE, MP3 and ACC? you did touch base on it but did not show us while doing the demo on the Ozone 7, again thanks for your amazing information sessions. Cheers Bruce

Fiiiinally, the legend Spike Stent....and hardly any technical questions :-( Would have LOVED to have heard his vocal chain. I know it's "not about the gear" guys but I didn't learn much from this interview that I can use or try myself. A lot of incidental chit chat and patting each others back. I love what you guys do but this was a disappointing interview, especially since you all kept mentioning how important "education" is.
Painful. This was like the conversation they should have had in the green room before shooting the show. Especially with the limited amount of info and interviews from such a legend of the industry.
This whole series felt a little out of place in the normal UA-cam culture to me when it came out but I love how well produced it is and as a result, it’s become timeless
Guys thanks for getting my favourite mixer talking, I really think spike should do some instructional videos for beginners in mixing, I'm sure loads of people would buy them, hope parts 2,3,4 come soon 😎🎸
i'd love to see Chris Athens on here, the mastering engineer, he masters Drake, Meek Mill, Rick Ross and a lot more, or tom coyne (ariana grande, future, big sean)
To everyone upset that they didn't take a lot away from this episode, I think you should watch it again. People fail to realize it is often our life skills, and broader approach that will get us by in a career, than our exact vocal chain on any given tune. The entire thing they are saying is just keep grinding, and you will get where you need to be. Humans usually overestimate the amount they can accomplish in a year, and underestimate the amount they can accomplish in ten years. I respect the fact you guys took a more philosophical approach with this episode. It is difficult to speak on the more esoteric concepts of our art, and just so you know I took tons away from this show, thank you.
yes my life skills would be a lot better with a ssl 4000 gml 8200 and a separate ssl f384 for drum bus, also an la2a as well as urei 1176, ns 10 i already got
Herb has good insights often, but he's dominating this one. Are you TRYING to give Changor a complex? Very little respect shown to him, it's sort of jovial bullying - good fun in the studio, but a bit much to act like that towards him on the show.
Spike was just about to describe his vocal chain during batters box but they moved onto the next question before he answered!
I KNOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!!
UGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!! THE HELL

@@48billion88 thanks for spreading your knowledge! would you mind tellin me what settings or ratio he uses on that 1176?
@@48billion88 and so he eqs before he compresses?

its always this way...makes these shows so hard to watch
Let the guy speak, stop speaking over him

You can bypass all plugins on a channel by pressing Shift+A. That's much faster than clicking on by one : )

Great to see a bit with Spike. A shame to not mention any of the Massive Attack or Bjork records that were so influential sonically.
Photocall Music you’re not kidding
Time for a second round and dinner with Spike!
Figure 8 for recording BG vocals - the one thing I took away from this.
Massive fan of Spike! Massive Oasis fan!

Finally.... U got Spike Stent on a guy I've msg you about for ages. I'm looking forward to listening/watching.
This episode was fantastic. Great perspective from greats
Many thanks!
Yes, we'd want the chain. But I guess Dave didn't.
you guys should try to get metro boomin on pensados place
Great show. Dave, Spike really messed you up in batters box 😂😊😂. Spike Stent 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Powerful Dave Pensado doing an ITL for us at 6pm on a Saturday night

@@diegooliveirabenjamin What's the 'Vosso?' is that a mic or something?

I love the izotope stuff too. the ITL seems like a b-side, really funky but good stuff
Spike has another chart topping song wish Dave didn’t interrupt the vocal chain man

Way too much Herb talk and not enough recording talk.. Love the show but disappointed with this one.
Spike is 👑.
2023, legend's

Vocal Chain!!!!
Batter's box... that's so good LOL
