After watching 2 different videos of this I finally get it. It was all in Alice's head. Every since the car accident she has been in a coma. She is having a dream encounter. She is reunited with her brother Hans formely known as Deemo. Unknown to her until it's almost time for her to wake up does she realize it's her brother. The first awakening in the hospital is still a dream. So it's basically a dream within a dream. She goes back in time through the mask she finds and tries to stop the sorrow from happening even if it is impossible, because she is still alive and Hans is not. Hans died in a car accident which is the flash back she gets as she ascends. Despite her effort to be with her brother, it works out because she leaves behind a pc herself (memory of her?) so he won't be lonely. So when Hans is disappearing, a memory of Alice is disappearing with him.

YES!!! I DIDN"T CRY!!! I FOUGHT THE TEARS AND WON!!! But in all seriousness, a long while ago, like two years, I watched this 4 times separately and cried through all of them. I've been trying to forget the sadness I felt for the two siblings for YEARS.
No matter how many you watch this.. you'll be crying.. I don't have any older brother/sister but I know the feeling when your siblings is not in this world again.. why even I'm crying writing this comment...*sobs*
Every play-through of the original always brought me to tears but this... This made me openly bawl. One of the best story-lines for any game in my book.

I remember the first time. I started playing this game because I play piano and it kind of simulated playing a piano by using three fingers each hand. Little did I know the end of this game would break me and leave me crying on the floor.
Although I enjoy the rhythm portions of Reborn more, the story of the game is much better portrayed through these stunning 2D animations. The 3D environments of Reborn are pretty, but the character models and exploration are a bit clunky. In the end, I didn't really feel anything about the grand reveal of Deemo's true identity. The 2D animation just has so much more personality.
I heard that the main girl's name is Alice and the masked girl's name is Celia. Even though they basically were the same person rhey have different names since Celia and Alice were two different people in the world where Deemo existed...
Omg I remember the moment I downloaded this game on my tablet years ago!! It was the most magical game I had ever played! And I know I fide out that this masterpiece is now going to be a movie!! This is me being a theorist, but I believe that the pieces of the mask are a way of showing that Alice is slowly remembering what happened to Hans, and thus falls into denial. As she take the identity of the Masked Lady, she went through some lengths to keep Alice within her coma. The scene in which Celia throws the mask away is the final piece for Alice to wake up. This was a way of Alice realizing that there was nothing she could do that will bring Hans back, and that she should live with that fact for the rest of her life. Sorry if I spoiled so much for many others who never played the game, but you asked for an explanation, and I wanted to deliver. Hope this answered some questions, and that it will be enough until Deemo's 3.0 update!

The masked lady's name is Celia, which is the part of Alice that did not want to leave Deemo, Celia uses the same letters to spell Alice.
Hina if you write it with katakana it actually is written backwards.「アリセ」(alice/"a|ri|se") becomes「セリア」(celia/"se|ri|a"). although that would not be how the name alice is spelled usually in japanese... that would be "arisu"「アリス」 but i just realise that this maybe was intentional from the creators.. if you read "a|ri|se" with english pronounciation, instead of japanese, the name gets a new and deeper meaning :D but it's the same as in many anime where puns originating from spelling and/or words can't be translated... (for example in one song of the anime k-on. there is one line where it says "ich[i] ni san shi gohan" where they count up from one to five ("go") and rice ("gohan") at the same time... it's impossible to translate this literally :/ )

this is pretty much I've ever wanted in a game. excellent music, memorable characters, a heart wrenching story/backstory. all in all the perfect game for me.
All without any lines during the cutscenes too,this just proves that sometimes,we don't need to hear the characters talk to be able to see the beauty and tragedy of some stories if it was written well,Deemo being the perfect example
MS&DC Universe if you are into that kind of games which have only one predetermined story line which is yet beautiful to the point you don't mind being "led" through then i recomend "to the moon". There is even a video serie with pewdiepie playing it start to end no cuts other than videos themselves if you are interested. Just take it like 4 hours long movie with minigames.
My children like this movie and this movie make my childern want to learn how to play piano and become like deemo or V.K and he always save he money and buy one piano
