Underappreciated and misunderstood film . The absurdity; brutality and in some cases
necessity of war to defeat absolute evil. Rest in Peace Scott Wilson, aka Corporal Clearboy
along with Major Falconer; Captain Beckman; Sergeant Rossi and the rest of those very
    brave men.

"That was exactly three weeks ago, when we occupied the Castle. No one knows for sure when exactly the Major occupied the Countess, but no one was surprised..."

Just love this film and especially the soundtrack... Poignant, perceptive and witty, if somewhat surreal...

After seeing the movie no telling how many times, I finally researched the soundtrack. Very chilling soundtrack to an excellent movie !

For reasons I have never understood, you rarely see this on television anywhere. When I found the DVD by Indicator, I had to buy it. If you like this movie, this is what you need to buy. It's loaded with extras. The other thing that I have noticed is that the audience is divided by those who love it, and those who hate it. There is no middle ground. What REALLY sets it apart is the beautiful music score by Michael Legrand. Does anyone know if the soundtrack was ever released? I'd love to have it. By the way, the movie is pretty faithful to the book, sometimes word for word. The author, William Eastlake, actually served in the Army during The Battle of the Bulge. I've always felt he put what he saw, into the book. A must read!

An excellent film that represents the horrors of warfare . . . and the beauty that is destroyed. I loved this movie as a boy . . . and I love it now in my middle-age years.

My Dad lived thru the Battle of Bastogne. His modest accounts, confirmed by the men he saved, match the events fictionally depicted in this film. The timbre of LeGrand's score approaches the travesty of the carnage that beset Dad after his unit had enjoyed the respite offered by the liberated dens of sin and the locals. A tossing of dice, fates cast to the winds of Aries/Mar's whims.
B.T.W. years later he caroused with this film's star gambling at golf and "partying". Small world...

An enchanting mini-score by Le Grand embellishes Pollack's ethereal treatment of Bill Eastlake's WWII tale. The musical melange reflects a masterful montage narrative compelling pathos & bathos as inescapable components of the war which still impacts our lives & destinies this very day.
A personal note: the rarely portrayed panic that led some American troops to flee while stripping off their uniforms did indeed occur. My Dad witnessed it as he led a small squad in its desperate battle to reach a defensive position during what he called the "Battle of Bastogne". He never called any of them cowards. He would only comment on the courage of the advancing German troops and that of his own men who gave ground grudgingly while inflicting heavy casualties on the relentless enemy. The hell depicted in the film's climax was real for those who were there.

Cool Movie!! Great sound track and one the best of real shootout films! Way ahead of its time! Falk, Lancaster-all give great performances. A must see with brilliant photography and action that-for its time-was unequaled.

Maj. Abraham Falconer( Burt Lancaster):When the German tanks get here, we'll have a reception. They're brave sons of bitches, and we should not allow their heroic actions to go unsung. They should all have a cocktail!
    Red Queen: Cocktail?
Maj. Abraham Falconer: Cognac bottle filled with gasoline.

"I'm a baker" "I'm a baker's wife" and "your WHAT was too small?" "Our sect -- S-E-C-T". And film that was trying too hard to be hip, but still one of the best soundtracks ever.

Capt. Lionel Beckman (Actor Patrick O' Neal): No Krauts yet!
Maj. Abraham Falconer: You never will. You're a dreamer, Beckman. They'll get you first!

Does anyone know if there's a name/term/class for this particular style of 'choral-music' (for me) that was particularly favoured in 1960's films ??

I would love to know as well. I search for a record (more likely) about once a year but nothing has ever turned up. There is a collection of Legrand on CD that supposedly has this track on it.
