    Here are the two amps, back-to-back. Clean first, then with a 1981 DRV pedal. Neunaber supplying the reverb. Yes, I'm sure you'd have done the video differently, but I have no intention of being one of those UA-cam guys. "Let me show you how to work your Axe Fx 4!" "Here's how to inappropriately touch your Helix!" There are PLENTY of those guys on here. Click that Spotify link, hit FOLLOW and then get off my lawn.

    That 10” speaker makes a huge difference in the clarity of the high end. The mids are more scooped, which with the SG is glorious. Sounds amazing as always, Mark!

    I think from a marketing perspective, using a C10R ceramic speaker instead of a neodymium is a great move. I'm not sure everyone is on board with neodymium, though I think they're perfectly fine, but when placing a cab mic, you might have to move it around a bit to find the sweet spot. As for the sound, the Princeton has more highs, less lows, which should suit the darker output of the SG humbuckers compared to a single coil Fender, though a bit of EQ can usually fix that. It might be interesting to connect the 12" speaker in the Deluxe to the Princeton amp to get a real apples-to-apples comparison of how each amp is voiced, keeping in mind that amps are tweaked to match the speaker.

    I like the Deluxe with cleans. Sounds more like a colored amp than a blank slate like the Princeton does. Prefer the Princeton with dirt, but the Deluxe doesn’t sound bad with dirt, just a bit less pronounced.

    Great playing! I just saw that you are from Memphis, me too! Question, a year later what can you say about the comparison of these models? I've been going direct for years with IEMs, but have been interested in getting something from the tonemaster line for small venues that still allow or require an on stage amp. I've got tube amps, but looking for something light and dependable, mostly a pedal platform as I like to run my amps pretty clean. I've owned tube deluxes in the past, but never owned a Princeton... Thanks again! sg

      @@tubingforever Are you serious? At least in my experience here with what guitar players use in the local blues scene, they all mostly use Fender tube amps with spring reverb on 2-3 (low but noticeable). That said, I've never tried a reverb pedal, and plan to do so soon, along with a delay. Strymon does both I read, but also read not the best pedal for it..?

    Question: I’m in the market for a small solid state amp to gig and for touring. Is the Princeton loud enough for bar gigs with a band? I really like the sound of the deluxe more but right now I’m using a boogie subway rocket 20. 20 watts with a 10” speaker and it’s too loud for some venues. Will the Princeton cut bigger bars alone with smaller ones?

    • @fffantasticboom
      @fffantasticboom  Рік тому +3

      On most gigs, I take the Deluxe TM rather than the Princeton TM. The Princeton is loud enough for some bands but not others. The Deluxe is always loud enough. I don’t think the size of the venue is that relevant since it’s always going into the PA. But hearing oneself onstage (and with the amount of cleanness/distortion you want) is easy with the Deluxe but a bit risky with the Princeton.

Do these really pass the sniff test?? Thanks, really impressive phrasing! I found myself watching the whole video at first because you demo them as I prefer (without a mic right up against them) Just loud and in an open room as If I was there, and secondly your playing! Thank you very much, Christopher. I’m from Memphis, but I live in Dallas now. I do lessons on Skype every week, though, and would love to have you onboard.
      Before buying my Deluxe TM several years ago, I A/B’d it to the $2400 tube version. I far preferred the sound of the TM bc it wasn’t as brittle sounding when distorted. It’s so strange hearing people say “it’s not as warm as the tube version”, as if they’ve been listening through nothing but a bias. It’s the same BS people have been spouting about modelers for years. I think these sound not one bit worse than their tube counterparts.

      With the Tone Master you have an XLR direct out, so as long as the stage has monitors (I’ve only played a couple that didn’t) you’d be fine using the direct sound. The amp could even be fully silent on stage.

It’s a great amp with lots of feel wonderful cleans and mild distortions but it’s not a metal machine although it takes pedals really well but I can’t see it competing with the hype of the Fender TM’s which I think are just an evolution of the Fender Champ series (which are great little amps particularly when you upgrade the speaker)but with a big price tag.
