Not a good idea to use your work computer for personal things.

I know of a story someone who checked their personal email on their work computer and then got into a disagreement with the employer and they had access to his password because he used their hardware and network and so they were able to see his communications with his lawyer and defend against him and I think he lost because of that.

@@jf5600 how did they find out the employer got into their personal email?

I worked for a financial company and one of the employees laptops had some crazy pornography on it when we were fixing it in IT. His excuse was some kind of virus must have downloaded it for him. He was a pretty old guy which was hilarious.

@@MidwestFarmToys That's only for criminal court. You can do discovery in civil court, but you don't automatically get all of their info.

As an IT admin, just keep your personal stuff separate from your work systems. The IT policy probably specifies that all data stored on the company's systems belongs to the company. Anything stored on company IT equipment is likely to be backed up elsewhere that you do not have access to. When you start transferring certain files to a flash drive or other personal device there is a high probability that the IT team is receiving alerts to the fact. Just sign out of any personal account that you did sign into. Clear any passwords out of your browser if you want to but don't bother trying to delete things or clean things up. The pc itself will be wiped anyway and the data you are hiding isn't hiding from the admins if they want it. I'm not looking to get into anyone's personal business but it is our responsibility to make sure systems can be audited and to protect against data loss.

People seriously use work computers for personal banking? Wow talk about getting your private information out there. At home we have two computers one is for all the searching the web or checking email the other is sticky used for banking so it only visits the banks website and it still has virus protection but it lessons the chance of a breach of my information on my end

To be honest , if your company is setup correctly with their IT department they know exactly what you have been upto even if you delete things. Don’t use personal messaging apps on work equipment. Never save passwords to your browser at home or at work.

Why shouldn’t someone save passwords to an encrypted password-protected browser password manager?

@@RealGalaxyGamersbecause if you leave and don’t log off, they are automatically logged in to any website where you saved your password.

I did recently finished a job and I DD 0'd wiped the partitions and reloaded the base OS to a fresh install. But this was just to ensure removal of sensitive customer data. Cookies and personal files being removed was just a side benefit.

It’s also a terrible idea to take revenge on a former employee as a manager. Friend of mine secured a new job and the new boss mentioned in passing that the former boss had given her an “interesting” review, but they were happy that the image portrayed didn’t match the person they had interviewed. She then requested to see what he had written, her new HR dpt was legally obliged to hand it over, and it was pretty horrific. She did nothing more than send the review back to her old HR dpt in an email titled “fyi” and a few months later leaned that her former manager has been dismissed over this. Undone by his own words….

IT Operations Specialist here. Any good company wipes the device, but it is worth doing your part. Aside from deleting, sync and export your bookmarks. Too often there are people calling back asking if those can be retrieved.

thinking about his 2nd point about networking. I have recently tested the job market waters for my sector of the industry i work in. It's shocking how little it takes to impress potential employers. Simply being honest, having SOME common sense, and being able to communicate will get you pretty much any job you want. Experience helps, but the simple personality traits that have become so uncommon will make you stand out amongst applicants almost anywhere.

You can get free smartphone or even $100 smartphone instead of using company equipment use your own stuff.
Using company equipment for personal things should be grounds for termination and no unemployment.
