It's always been relevant in younger generations. It's the reason we no longer use the f slur and the reason we no longer call black people negros. The civil rights movement, women's suffrage movement, and gay rights movement were all filled with people of the now older generations whose views were seen by their elders in a similar way to how our views are seen now. Society evolves with time and political correctness is part of that. Good rule of thumb: A joke has to be more funny than it is offensive. Problems arise when a joke isn't funny enough to carry its offensiveness. If its not funny its a statement, not a joke.
That's an incredibly egotistical perspective. It's gotta be the worst take I've heard on the whole "comedians are scared of political correctness" debate.
even if it isn't funny a joke is a joke, comedians just try and get their panties in a bunch when people don't laugh at their jokes that consist entirely of: "look at how offensive what Im saying is, isn't this so funny?"

Such an important distinction to make between the unrestrained power of the internet and groups trying to figure out how to navigate the best way to treat other people and sensitive issues. A lot of people do conflate the two and I've never seen someone articulate that distinction exactly. Like "cancel culture" where people on Twitter will try to run you out of a job for whatever reason is not the same as the movement to be more pc or to be sensitive about issues and minority groups' struggles
He had to pay a small fine. That's not being thrown in jail. Also how are you blaming a young audience for laws set up by Gen X and boomer politicians?
@@oddguys178 But Bo Burnham was clearly saying the thing within a context which was cancelled culture. He was never suggesting that comedians have never gotten into any form of legal trouble linked to their jokes ever.
@@mnm1273 alright, since you want to argue, the laws are very clearly heavily influenced by cancel culture. People get fined for making jokes that could possibly offend protected groups, which is basically the legal form of cancel culture.
It's like the Lisa Kudrow part in "Death to 2020" where her character repeats how conservative voices are being silenced on many different talk shows, platforms, and even a book.
I've always believed this. People get called cancelled but continue to be fine in their respective spaces? Also pretending like your comedy is the end all be all, but maybe it's racist? Maybe its not funny? Maybe that's ok and you could grow from it.
I love how he says “if it infringes on free speech and stuff, I’m against it” because it feels like the media is trying to get rid of some peoples free speech and it’s not as important of a right in America to a lot of people at the moment. As a 17 year old girl, seeing other people shut someone else up temporarily or permanently because they have a differing opinion on something scares me.
Media companies have pretty much always been privately owned. If you’re concerned about them controlling free speech, then your problem is with the free market. They’ve always been controlling the news, and they do so to make money. The only difference is that other info that they don’t cover can now go viral and contrast with their typical narratives. They aren’t getting more manipulative, everyone else is just getting louder, so we’re realizing the picture is a lot bigger. Problem is that now everyone is confused and disagreeing more than ever about what’s real.
Exactly, a celebrity can be part of [insert political party that Hollywood don’t agree with here] and next hour, career is over. Hollywood pays their stars to be part of [insert “good” political party here]. It’s not natural for all of those people to all suddenly be part of the [also insert “good” political party here]. And if people ain’t part of said party, they lose their whole career.

He specifically calls out things like cancel culture 4 years ago when it was much smaller at 1:53. Saying they are horrible and jobs being lost and lives being ruined is objectively bad. The people in this comment section are being the offended babies they want so desperately not to be
This reminds me of a quote. I can't remember where it came from or who said it, but here's what it is: *"The only offensive jokes are ones that aren't funny."*
That's because he's never been burned. One day he will say something that will land him in hot water, then he'll start crying for sympathy. He's safe now because he plays it safe.
@@RichWilco I dont really agree with that. I know people have gotten pissy over his comedy before, you can find videos of him being heckled during his shows in the past. I think too many people are being pissy cry babies cause they dont get to say whatever without any repercussions. Obviously not every case is the same, some people do over react but you cant pretend that every instance of outrage is unwarranted. Shrug it off and move forward or quit because comedy isnt for you if you cant handle crossing a line sometimes and getting back lash for it.
If you are a comedian, whose job it is to make people laugh, and instead of laughing, they think you're a terrible person and never want to listen to your jokes again, the audience isn't "too sensitive," you're just bad at your job
@Vladimir Peter then either it's worth it to you to continue performing for the 1000 that do, or you perhaps consider adjusting your material. Bonus points if you do some introspection and consider who those 1000 that do are and why other people don't. If you realize one day you've been catering to a bunch of racists for example, and you decide maybe that's not the brand identity you're trying to cultivate, you can adjust your material even if it's 50/50. However, you don't have to change a thing if you're happy with the size of your audience; lots of comedians are loved for saying controversial things. However, that doesn't mean you get to complain in the next breath about how your audiences are too small or "can't laugh at anything anymore." Once you're doing that, you're revealing that you're bad at catering to the desires of your audiences, which is your entire job as a comedian
I think that this is the older generation of Hollywood (everyone who’s careers peeked and who are not standing out currently) are coming to the realization that although they are getting a pushback for potentially hurtful and insensitive jokes and styles of entertainment, they are also realizing that at least this pushback is coming from a side standing for equality rather than a side of fascism and ignorance... they are also realizing that the currier institutions in society that these comedians brought to light and are continuing to do so, are now taken seriously by the masses. It’s a beautiful thing and speaks to the amount of influence specifically comedy and music have on the population
I generally agree with what he's saying, but I'm curious how he feels about the "pendulum" today. I think the moment it swings too far, it's a concern; not because of the degree of over-correction right now, but because of where it's heading. It's basically physics. It's not going to stop when you want it to if you're completely hands-off.

While over policing of speech is a problem, it's better than the alternative which devalues years of progress. Political correctness also isn't a new thing. Plus, if a word makes someone around you uncomfortable and it costs you nothing to not say it then the only reason you could have to say it is to be rude or for satire to make fun of people who say it seriously... People have the right to be upset at that in the same way you have the right to say it.

Bo Burnham is an amazing comic. "Words words words" is one of the 5 best hours of comedy ever. It's a brilliant piece of art.

Good rule of thumb: A joke has to be more funny than it is offensive. Problems arise when a joke isn't funny enough to carry its offensiveness. If its not funny its a statement, not a joke.
Comedy:
A subjective form of entertainment
Madtim:
"If it doesn't fit my exact definition of Funny, it's not a joke, its a statement"
"Horrifying and violent." Wonderful and accurate way to describe the internet.

This is so cut to pieces. I'd like to see the unedited version. It's very hard to follow
I'll come back to this when my vocab is large enough for me to understand what he's saying.
Intentions of political correctness good, over correction bad, still better than nothing, Twitter sucks
Never heard of this guy until today.
Then again, I live under a rock
So glad to see how's changed over the years. I really felt like he grew up with me, and now I understand that my racist, edgey humor was nothing more than a coping mechanism and an attempt to make friends with other edgey racists, and he seemed to understand himself in his new special. I hope he gets better again so that he can teach the world more.
He really seems to be doing a lot better mentally post-Inside and I couldn’t be more happy for him and all that he’s accomplished up until this point.
Dear CBS where can I listen the whole video or audio without being scattered in bits?
Neptune Joo welcome to the mainstream media: sound bites galore.
"No comedian has been thrown in jail"
As a Count Dankula fan I would like to disagree
He had to pay a small fine. That's not being thrown in jail. Also how are you blaming a young audience for laws set up by Gen X and boomer politicians?
@@mnm1273 800 pounds is not a small fine, and I wasn't, I was making a joke about how Bo Burnham was wrong
@@oddguys178 But Bo Burnham was clearly saying the thing within a context which was cancelled culture. He was never suggesting that comedians have never gotten into any form of legal trouble linked to their jokes ever.
@@oddguys178 And yes 800 pounds is a small fine. For something that can go to court anything under a grand is undoubtedly small.
@@mnm1273 alright, since you want to argue, the laws are very clearly heavily influenced by cancel culture. People get fined for making jokes that could possibly offend protected groups, which is basically the legal form of cancel culture.

I've always believed this. People get called cancelled but continue to be fine in their respective spaces? Also pretending like your comedy is the end all be all, but maybe it's racist? Maybe its not funny? Maybe that's ok and you could grow from it.
This is the first time I've heard him serious...

The people saying "this aged like milk" or "he's supporting cancel culture" did you watch the first 3 seconds and pause to comment? This reminds me of a quote. I can't remember where it came from or who said it, but here's what it is:
*"The only offensive jokes are ones that aren't funny."*
What a well thought out and reasonable thing to say.
He takes a much more mature approach to this topic then a lot of his senior comedian colleagues.
Shrug it off and move forward or quit because comedy isnt for you if you cant handle crossing a line sometimes and getting back lash for it.
agreed, as a fellow minority of everything and 16.
Why is the interviewers mic off?
*mumble mumble, mumble?*
*intelligent rambling*

so the person who sat down and edited this did not notice that you can actually not hear the questions.. do you employ anyone who wants to work there?
I think that this is the older generation of Hollywood (everyone who’s careers peeked and who are not standing out currently) are coming to the realization that although they are getting a pushback for potentially hurtful and insensitive jokes and styles of entertainment, they are also realizing that at least this pushback is coming from a side standing for equality rather than a side of fascism and ignorance... they are also realizing that the currier institutions in society that these comedians brought to light and are continuing to do so, are now taken seriously by the masses. It’s a beautiful thing and speaks to the amount of influence specifically comedy and music have on the population
I’m amazed by bo every time I hear him speak
I want Bo burnham to host Starurday night live so bad!!!!!!!
He's correct. If I had to choose between the 2 bad situations, I'd rather be annoyed than lynched.
How about neither
I wish I had his words
I generally agree with what he's saying, but I'm curious how he feels about the "pendulum" today. I think the moment it swings too far, it's a concern; not because of the degree of over-correction right now, but because of where it's heading. It's basically physics. It's not going to stop when you want it to if you're completely hands-off.
Foreshadowing "Comedy" from Inside lol.
